Chapter 1

The mark on my neck went cold at 8:52 that night, three words after Desmond opened his mouth to end me in front of two hundred wolves.

I'd been home eleven hours by then, since dawn, since the border checkpoint smell of wolfsbane antidote had finally washed off my hands in the shower. I'd crossed into Lycan territory alone the night before to pull poison out of a stranger's Gamma because no one else would go. Desmond hadn't asked where I'd been. He never did anymore. I'd taken my seat at his right hand at the banquet table like I had for five years, and the absence of his question sat in my chest like an old bruise that never quite faded, just went quiet.

Then the great doors slammed open and Summer Hale came through on Callum Reyes's shoulders, screaming, her leg wrapped in a splint, her face wet with performance.

"She attacked me. Josie attacked me on the trail — she shifted and she — look, LOOK—"

The images hit the whole hall at once, forced through the mind-link like a fist through glass: a silver-white wolf tearing into her on a moonlit path. My fur color. My wolf. The hall turned on me in a single breath, ranked warriors snarling, five years of service erased by one manufactured picture.

I stood to deny it. Lune went utterly still inside me — not afraid. Coiled. *Look at the splint angle, Josie. That's wrong. That's all wrong.*

I never got the chance to speak. Desmond rose first.

His face wore the look I'd learned in five years of marriage to him — already decided, performing the weight of a decision he hadn't actually had to make. He didn't look at me.

"I, Desmond Cole, Alpha of Shadowridge, reject you, Josie Whitmore, as my mate and Luna."

The mark went cold first. Then it went empty — a door closing on a room with nothing left inside it. The crack that followed tore through my sternum loud enough that the wolves nearest me flinched. Desmond's own wolf howled inside him, one raw, strangled sound, and he crushed it silent.

I did not fall. My spine straightened a quarter inch. I breathed out through my nose.

And then I looked at Summer's leg the way I've looked at a thousand real fractures, and everything about her fell apart in my hands before I ever touched her.

Wrong angle. A tibial break sets the splint high, above the swell — hers sat low, comfortable, decorative. No swelling where a shattered bone would have blown the tissue up like a drum. Her wince, when Callum shifted her weight, arrived half a beat too late — grief performed instead of felt.

*She's lying,* Lune said, surging up through me for the first time all night. *You knew the second she came through that door. Finish it.*

I walked to the banquet table and lifted the silver ceremonial blade.

The hall went rigid. Desmond's mouth opened — nothing came out.

"A tibial fracture displaces here." I touched the air an inch above her shin, my voice even, clinical, pitched to carry. "The swelling would already be purple. Your splint is angled to protect a bone that was never broken." I stepped closer, silver catching firelight between us. "So let's find out. If it's real, the metal won't matter. If it's not—"

Her skin rippled before I finished the sentence.

Summer's wolf tore through her clothes on a scream that wasn't pain, it was panic — tawny gold, four legs, all of them whole, all of them perfect. She hit the floor running and never looked back, crashing through the great doors and out into the dark, her healthy limbs blazing in the firelight for every wolf in that hall to see.

Silence. Two hundred wolves who had snarled at me a minute ago stood frozen in it.

I let the blade fall. It rang against stone.

I took the salve from my belt and dissolved the dead mark from my throat in front of all of them, then unclasped the Luna pendant and set it on the table like the last chart I'd ever close.

"A severed bond doesn't mend, Desmond." I said it the way I deliver a terminal diagnosis — quiet, sure, already grieved. "Your wolf will wither for what you just did."

I walked past him, past the frozen hall, out through the doors Summer had left swinging.

Behind me, over the wind, the former Luna's voice cracked out across the courtyard, high and desperate. "Josie — Josie, wait, he didn't mean — you can't just leave him like this—"

I kept walking.
