Chapter 2

The smell of rubbing alcohol was sharp, but it wasn't strong enough to mask the cloying scent of vanilla when the clinic door swung open.

Isabel walked in. She wore a soft pink sweater, her hands clutching a small canvas tote. She looked the picture of innocent concern, but her dark eyes were sharp. They quickly took in my pale skin and the dark bruises on my arm where the IV needle had been.

"Paige," she murmured softly. "I brought some of your things from the pack house. I thought you might want them."

I didn't speak. I just watched her. Deep down, where my inner wolf used to pace and growl at the presence of an intruder, there was only a vast, empty silence. I felt nothing. No anger. No jealousy. Just a cold void.

Isabel stepped closer to the bed. She reached into her tote bag and pulled out a small, familiar object.

My breath hitched, just for a fraction of a second. It was the wooden wolf my father had whittled for me. The wood was worn smooth from years of me rubbing my thumb over its back when I couldn't sleep. It was the only piece of my father, the only piece of my old pack, that I still had.

"Elliot said you liked this old thing," Isabel said. Her voice was dripping with fake sweetness. She set the carving down right on the very edge of my mattress, deliberately within reach of her draped silk sleeve. "I just worry about you, Paige. You seem so fragile lately. It must be hard, knowing you can't give Elliot what he really needs."

She turned slightly. Her arm brushed the mattress. The sleeve caught the wooden figure.

It tumbled over the edge.

*Crack.*

The sound echoed like a gunshot in the quiet room. The wooden wolf hit the hard tile floor and splintered. The head snapped clean off. The body split right down the middle.

I stared at the broken pieces. Nine years ago, I would have dropped to my knees. I would have wept. I would have screamed at her for destroying my family heirloom.

But today, my eyes were dry. My heart beat at a slow, steady rhythm.

"Oh no," Isabel gasped, pressing a manicured hand to her mouth. But her eyes betrayed her. A small, triumphant smile played on her lips. "I'm so sorry, Paige. It was an accident. I can have one of the Omega staff glue it back together for you."

I looked up from the floor and met her gaze. She was expecting rage. She was expecting tears she could report back to Elliot to prove how unstable and jealous I was.

Instead, I just looked at her. Really looked at her. I saw the cheap ambition, the fragile lies, and the absolute certainty that she had won. She had no idea she was standing on a trapdoor.

"You can leave now, Isabel," I said. My voice was completely flat.

She blinked, clearly thrown off by my calm tone. The fake smile faltered. She opened her mouth to speak, but found nothing to say. She turned on her heel and walked out, the door clicking shut behind her.

Slowly, I pushed the thin blankets aside. I slipped out of the bed, my bare feet hitting the cold tile. I knelt down and gathered the broken pieces of my father's wolf. The sharp splinters bit into my palm, but the pain grounded me.

I didn't cry. I sat back on the edge of the bed, looked at the broken wood in my hands, and began to calculate.

Hours passed. The clinic grew dark. The night shift nurse checked my vitals once, gave me a sympathetic look, and left me alone.

I pulled my phone from the side drawer. I bypassed my normal contacts and opened a secure messaging app, dialing a number I had memorized but never used.

It rang twice.

"Nolan Reid," a crisp, professional voice answered.

"Nolan. It's Paige Mitchell."

A brief pause on the other end. "Luna Paige. It's late. Is everything alright?"

"Just Paige," I corrected him. "Or Alpha Mitchell, if we are speaking legally."

The shift in my title hung in the air. Nolan was the werewolf legal council representative for our region. He was sharp, pack-neutral, and didn't care about pack politics—only pack law.

"I'm listening," Nolan said, his tone shifting to pure business.

"When my father died and Crescent Ridge dissolved, Elliot absorbed my family's territory into Shadowvale's borders. He treats it as his eastern defense line. But the land was never legally ceded, was it?"

"No," Nolan confirmed. "It was absorbed through a stewardship agreement, based on your mate bond and the family debt to Elder Hawkins. But the deed remains in the Mitchell name."

"Are my inherited Alpha bloodline rights legally intact?" I asked, staring at the broken pieces of wood on my nightstand.

"Yes. They never dissolved. You simply never claimed them."

"I'm claiming them now," I said smoothly. "I want to file a formal territorial dispute with the council. I am revoking Shadowvale's stewardship. I am reclaiming every inch of Crescent Ridge land."

Nolan let out a low whistle. "Paige, if I file this, Shadowvale's borders will shrink by a third overnight. Elliot will lose his most secure trade routes. It will signal to every allied pack that his dominance is legally unraveling."

"That is exactly the point. File it, Nolan. Blindside him. Keep it sealed until I give the word."

"Understood, Alpha Mitchell. I'll have the paperwork ready by morning."

I ended the call. The first chain was broken.

There was one last thing to do. One last tie to sever before the real exit began.

I closed my eyes and leaned back against the pillows. I ignored the main pack mind-link, the chaotic hum of Shadowvale wolves that I had tuned out for days. Instead, I reached deeper, searching for a quiet, dusty mental pathway.

It was a private channel. Elder Hawkins, Elliot's grandfather, had established it with me nine years ago when I first arrived, terrified and grieving my father. *'If you ever need me, child. Directly to me,'* he had said.

I had never used it. Until tonight.

*Grandfather,* I pushed the thought through the dark void.

For a moment, there was nothing. Then, a heavy, tired mental presence brushed against mine.

*Paige. Child.* His voice echoed in my mind, thick with age and an unspoken sorrow.

I didn't raise my mental voice. I didn't inject it with anger or betrayal. I just laid out the facts, cold and clear.

*Isabel is not Elliot's true mate, but he has named her his Luna,* I told him. *He forced me to give her my blood today until I crashed. He broke my body. He let her break my father's carving.*

Hawkins's mental presence wavered. A wave of deep shame radiated through the link.

I kept going. *Years ago, on the highway during the rogue attack... I didn't just crash the car, Grandfather. I was pregnant. I was bleeding out, and I called for Elliot. He blocked me because he was running with Isabel. I lost the pup alone.*

A sharp, painful gasp echoed in my mind. The old Alpha hadn't known about the baby. I felt his grief spike, sharp and bitter.

*I am filing a territorial dispute with the council,* I finished calmly. *I am taking back Crescent Ridge. And I am leaving Shadowvale. I am leaving him.*

I waited for the argument. I waited for him to weaponize his failing health, to remind me of the debt my family owed him, to beg me to give his grandson one more chance. He was an Alpha of the old ways. He valued order above all else.

The silence stretched for a long, agonizing minute.

Then, the old man's voice returned. It was stripped of its Alpha authority, leaving only the weary rasp of a grandfather who had watched his legacy rot from the inside out.

*I know.*

Two words. A confession. An apology. A final release.

He didn't try to stop me. He knew he had no right.

*Goodbye, Grandfather,* I whispered in the dark.

I severed the link, shutting him out of my mind forever. The room was perfectly quiet. My neck still carried Elliot's mark, but my soul was already miles away. The board was set. Now, all I had to do was wait for Elliot to make his final mistake.
