Chapter 3

The pack run was mandatory.

Miller announced it at breakfast three days after the Harvest Banquet, his voice carrying across the dining hall with the easy authority of a man who had never been refused. "Full pack attendance. Dawn tomorrow. We reinforce territorial boundaries."

I sat at the Alpha table and nodded. The Luna role required presence at pack runs. I could give them presence.

What I couldn't give them was a shift.

The wolfsbane had eased since I'd stopped eating Fenn's meals, but my wolf remained buried in that suppressed silence—muffled, distant, a pressure without form. I'd learned to walk beside shifted wolves without showing the shame of it. I'd learned to keep my face neutral while the entire pack watched their Luna remain human.

I'd learned a lot of things in four months of marriage to Miller Vargas.

---

Dawn came cold and sharp.

I dressed in running clothes—practical, dark, nothing that would catch on branches. Miller was already in the courtyard when I arrived, his wolf form massive and silver-gray, his Alpha aura pressing outward like a weight on the air. The pack assembled around him in a loose formation. Betas. Gammas. Deltas. Even the Omegas who could shift stood ready.

Rose stood at Miller's side in her wolf form—smaller than his, rust-red, her eyes tracking me with the same deliberate focus she used at banquets.

I took my place beside Miller and waited.

He glanced at me once. Then he turned and led the pack into the forest.

I ran.

The wolves moved through the trees in a coordinated surge, their paws silent on the leaf-covered ground. I kept pace at Miller's flank, my human legs burning, my breath coming hard. The forest blurred past. The scent of pine and damp earth filled my lungs.

And inside my chest, something moved.

It wasn't a shift. It wasn't even a voice.

It was pressure.

Furious, sustained, building like a storm front moving inland. My wolf slammed against the suppressed space where she'd been buried for months—not muffled anymore, not distant. Present. Enraged. The impact reverberated through my ribs, my spine, the base of my skull.

I stumbled.

Miller's wolf turned, eyes narrowing.

I caught myself against a tree trunk and forced my breathing steady. The pressure didn't subside. It crested, held, crested again. My hands shook. I pressed one palm flat against the bark and the other against the mark on my neck.

The mate bond pulsed—Miller's irritation threading through the link.

I pushed off the tree and kept running.

The pack moved ahead. I followed. The pressure inside my chest built with every stride, no longer an echo but a presence—something alive and awake and absolutely done waiting.

My wolf was not dead.

She was enraged.

And for the first time since the night Theo fell, the gesture of pressing my thumb against the mark didn't feel like endurance.

It felt like a fuse.

---

The message came two days later.

I was overseeing the Luna's routine review of supply logistics in the pack house's administrative wing—a task Miller had assigned me months ago because it required presence without power. I reviewed delivery schedules, approved requisitions, signed off on inventory counts. Boring. Visible. Harmless.

The lower-rank wolf who delivered the weekly report was named Soren. I recognized him from Theo's security rotation—a Delta who'd served under my brother before the fall. He set the folder on my desk and met my eyes for half a second longer than protocol required.

Inside the folder, beneath the inventory sheets, was a slip of paper.

Four words in Theo's handwriting: *Chase has what you need.*

I kept my face neutral. "Thank you, Soren. Dismissed."

He bowed and left.

I closed the folder and stared at the paper.

Chase Webb. Theo's assistant. The Delta who'd been outside pack territory the night Theo fell and had stayed outside ever since—operating as an effectively rogue wolf because returning meant execution.

Theo had left him something.

And now Chase was ready to deliver it.

I pulled the supply schedule toward me and scanned the upcoming deliveries. External shipments came weekly—medicinal supplies, preserved goods, materials the pack couldn't produce internally. The next delivery was scheduled for dawn in three days, eastern storage yard.

I took a pen and made a notation in the Luna's hand: *I will personally oversee the next medicinal supply delivery. Routine quality assurance.*

No one would question it. The Luna overseeing supply quality was exactly the kind of visible, harmless task Miller wanted me occupied with.

I folded the slip of paper into a square so small it disappeared in my palm. Then I walked to the infirmary, dropped it through the floor grate, and returned to my quarters.

Inside my chest, the pressure crested again.

I pressed my thumb against the mark and smiled.

---

The delivery team arrived at dawn.

I stood in the eastern storage yard with a clipboard and the posture of a Luna performing routine oversight. The air smelled like frost and pine. The sky was still dark.

Three wolves unloaded crates from the supply wagon. I checked each one against the manifest, my pen moving down the list with practiced efficiency. Dried herbs. Bandages. Tinctures sealed in glass.

The fourth crate was heavier.

I lifted the lid. Beneath the top layer of dried herbs, nested in cloth, was a wolf-bone case—small, sealed, the surface etched with the Gamma's mark.

I didn't change my expression.

I signed the manifest, thanked the delivery team, and carried the crate into the pack house myself.

The locked storage room I'd identified three weeks ago was on the second floor, tucked behind the infirmary's supply wing. It was outside the Beta's standard monitoring sweep—I'd confirmed that by watching Darian's patrol patterns for a month. I unlocked the door, set the crate down, and opened it fully.

The wolf-bone case was cold and smooth beneath my fingers.

I broke the seal.

Inside: ledgers. Encrypted, dense, written in Theo's precise hand. Page after page documenting the funneling of Ironveil's pack war funds through rogue-market intermediaries—dates, amounts, account codes. And in the margins, notations in a different ink: *Miller present. Miller approved. Miller signed.*

My brother had built the entire case.

And Miller had killed him for it.

I closed the case carefully. The wolf-bone material was impervious to wolfsbane contamination—Chase had chosen it deliberately. I noted the irony with something that felt like laughter but came out silent.

I carried the case to the infirmary.

The loose stone beneath Theo's old bed frame came free easily. I slid the case into the hollow space, replaced the stone, and stood.

The pressure inside my chest crested again—sustained, furious, no longer waiting.

I pressed my thumb against the mark on my neck.

The mate bond pulsed faintly.

I walked out of the infirmary with my head high and my hands steady.

Inside the suppressed silence where my wolf had been buried, something that was no longer silent began to count.
