Chapter 5

The ceremonial elder raised his hands. The hall quieted. Three hundred wolves settled into their seats, the rustling of fabric fading into silence. Behind me, the torches flickered. Marvin's portrait hung above the altar, his face painted in the formal style reserved for Alphas who served with distinction—steady gaze, strong jaw, the faint lines around his eyes that came from years of genuine leadership.

I stood at the podium. My hands rested flat on the wood. My wolf pressed against its cage with a force that made my ribs ache.

In the front row, Damien sat with his spine rigid. Tiffany's hand rested on his arm, her fingers tight enough that her knuckles had gone white. The boy sat between them, swinging his legs.

Damien hadn't looked at the portrait yet. He was staring at the floor, his jaw working like he was chewing words he couldn't spit out.

Then the elder gestured toward the altar. "We honor Marvin Walker, Alpha of Ironridge, who gave his life defending this pack."

Damien's head snapped up.

He looked at the portrait. Really looked. His face drained of color so fast I thought he might pass out. His mouth opened. Closed. His hands gripped his knees hard enough that I saw his fingers shake.

He hadn't known. He truly hadn't known.

I watched realization move across his face—the kind that starts as confusion, shifts to horror, and lands somewhere between grief and guilt that has no name. He started to rise. His lips formed a word that didn't come out.

Behind him, three rows back, Mabel sat in widow's black. She didn't turn. Didn't acknowledge him. Her gaze stayed fixed on Marvin's portrait, her hands folded in her lap.

Damien sank back into his seat. His shoulders curled inward. For the first time since I'd known him, his Alpha aura flickered and went dim.

Tiffany leaned close and whispered something. He didn't respond. He just stared at his father's face above the altar, and I saw his throat work like he was trying not to be sick.

The elder nodded to me. My turn.

I stepped to the podium. Looked out at the assembled pack. Three hundred wolves. Jonah near the eastern wall, standing with the border patrol. Elena three rows back, her healer's bag at her feet. The Lycan King at the rear of the hall, his pale gray eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my wolf slam against its cage so hard I felt the crack spread through my sternum.

I forced myself still. Breathed once. Began.

"Marvin Walker built Ironridge through decades of service," I said. My voice stayed level. Precise. "He led through loyalty, not fear. He asked for my patrol assessments directly rather than routing them through chain of command. He learned the border routes by name. He sat beside me when the pack gathered, not above me."

The hall was completely silent. Even the children had stopped fidgeting.

"Three days ago, during a coordinated rogue assault on the eastern perimeter, Marvin Walker took a silver-tipped arrow defending the pack house. He shielded me from the archer positioned northwest of the tree line. He fought until the infirmary team arrived. He died from silver poisoning fourteen hours later."

I paused. Let the words settle.

"He died defending Ironridge. He died doing what he had always done—standing between his pack and the threat."

Mabel closed her eyes. Her hands tightened in her lap, but her face stayed carved from stone.

Damien stared at the floor. His shoulders shook. Once. Twice. His wolf howled inside him—I couldn't hear it, but I could see it in the way his body curled inward, the way his breath came too fast.

Tiffany's hand slipped from his arm. She pulled the small tin from her coat pocket and palmed it, her thumb rubbing the lid in small, anxious circles.

I kept speaking. About the border fortifications Marvin had approved. The rogue networks he'd disrupted. The way he'd trained the younger wolves with patience rather than dominance. I spoke without notes, in the undecorated language I used when I meant every word.

The Lycan King didn't move. His gaze stayed on me, unblinking, and something in his expression shifted—recognition, maybe, or confirmation of something he'd suspected but hadn't proven.

When I finished, the hall stayed silent for a long moment. Then the elder stepped forward and began the formal closing rites.

I stepped back from the podium. My hands were steady. My wolf was not. It pressed outward with a force that felt like something breaking open from the inside.

Then I heard footsteps behind me. Quick. Urgent.

Elena appeared at my elbow, her face carefully neutral. She held a folded message slip. Leaned close.

"Border report," she murmured. "A human man named Bryan Ruiz just arrived at the perimeter. He's demanding entry. Says he has personal business with a she-wolf currently in the pack house."

My gaze flicked to Tiffany. Her hand had gone still on the tin. Her face stayed composed, but her pulse jumped visibly at her throat.

"Hold him at the border," I said quietly. "Document his claim. Take a scent sample for verification."

Elena nodded and slipped out through the side door.

I turned back to the altar. The elder was concluding the rites, his voice formal and measured. The pack would rise soon. The ceremony would close.

But I wasn't done.

I stepped forward again. Not to the podium this time. I faced the assembled pack directly—three hundred wolves, the Lycan King, Damien frozen in the front row, Mabel in widow's black.

"Before this ceremony closes," I said, my voice carrying across the hall, "there is intelligence the pack has a right to hear."

I nodded to Elena, who had just returned through the side door. She rose from her seat, carrying a sealed document case, and walked to the front of the hall.

Damien's head lifted. His eyes met mine. Confusion. Then the first flicker of alarm.

Tiffany went very, very still.

Elena stopped beside me. Set the document case on the altar. Her hands were steady. Her face was not.

The hall held its breath.

And my wolf—caged, cracking, finally done waiting—pushed against the walls one more time.
