Chapter 1

The mate bond broke at exactly 10:47 p.m., three days before what should have been our tenth anniversary celebration.

I was standing at the edge of the banquet hall—the one I'd spent two weeks preparing, every napkin folded by hand, every candle positioned to catch the light just right—when Damien rose from his seat at the head table. The hall went quiet. Not the comfortable quiet of anticipation, but the airless kind that comes right before something shatters.

He didn't look at me.

"I have an announcement," he said, his voice carrying that Alpha tone I'd learned to recognize over ten years. The one that made every wolf in the room go still without knowing why. "One that concerns the future of this pack."

My heart kicked once, hard. I told myself it was good news. A new alliance. An expansion. Something to celebrate on the night that was supposed to be ours.

Then his eyes found mine across the room, and they were cold.

"I, Damien, Alpha of Ironvale," he began, each word deliberate and formal, "reject you, Serena, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold.

Not painful at first—just wrong, like someone had replaced my skin with something dead. Then the cold turned sharp, spreading down through my chest in a wave that knocked the air out of my lungs. Inside me, Lunara screamed. I'd barely heard her voice in years, but now it was everywhere—raw and howling and trapped behind a wall I couldn't break through.

I tried to breathe. Tried to move. The hall blurred at the edges.

Damien turned away from me—actually turned his back—and walked to where Sadie Berry stood at the front table. She was wearing white. A dress I'd never seen before, fitted and formal, like she'd been planning this moment for months.

He didn't hesitate.

He sank his teeth into her neck, right there in front of everyone, and the scent of a fresh mate mark flooded the hall—sharp and wrong and layered over the ghost of what used to be mine.

The room erupted in whispers. I heard my name. Heard "Luna" attached to someone else. Heard the scrape of chairs as wolves turned to stare.

I couldn't feel my hands.

Sadie pulled back from Damien's mark, her eyes bright and triumphant, and turned to face the room. To face me. She smiled, slow and deliberate, and the borrowed Alpha authority from Damien's mark rolled off her in waves.

"You know," she said, her voice carrying easily now, amplified by the bond she'd just stolen, "Serena always smelled like a rogue's leftovers."

Laughter. Actual laughter, scattered and nervous, from wolves who didn't know what else to do.

Sadie's smile widened. Then she looked directly at me and spoke in full Alpha tone—Damien's tone, channeled through his mark on her neck.

"Kneel," she commanded. "And congratulate your new Luna."

The Alpha tone hit me like a fist. My knees buckled. The bond-severance agony and the command crashed together, and something deeper than pain cracked open inside me—something old and buried and twenty years locked.

My vision flashed silver.

Bones cracked. Not breaking—shifting. My spine arched, and I heard the sound of my dress tearing as my body expanded beyond what it had ever been. The chandelier above me shattered. The banquet table splintered and flew across the hall in pieces.

I wasn't kneeling.

I was rising.

Lunara erupted from where she'd been sealed for a decade, and she was massive. Silver fur, luminous in the broken candlelight, twice the size of any wolf in the room. The aura that came with her wasn't something I controlled—it was absolute, ancient, and it drove every wolf in the hall to their knees.

Including Damien.

Including Sadie, crumpled against the wall with her mouth open and her borrowed authority dissolved like smoke.

The scent that flooded the room was moonflower and frost iron. I heard someone gasp. Heard Marcus, Damien's Beta, whisper a single word: "Silvercrest."

I locked eyes with Damien. He was on his knees, staring up at me, and for the first time in ten years, I saw something I'd never seen before.

Fear.

Lunara held his gaze. Held the silence. Let him feel the weight of what he'd just destroyed.

Then I shifted back.

Human again. Naked, but I didn't care. Someone's coat landed on my shoulders—Marcus, his face carefully blank. I pulled it around myself, straightened, and walked toward the door.

No one moved. No one spoke.

I didn't look at Damien. Didn't look at Sadie. Didn't look at any of them.

I walked out of the pack house, and the door closed behind me in absolute silence.

Outside, the night air was cold and clean. I kept walking until I reached the edge of Ironvale's territorial boundary, marked by the old stone where the border patrol kept their logs.

I reached into the coat pocket and pulled out the document I'd carried for three years. The one I'd prepared in silence, hoping I'd never need it.

The Silvercrest Protection Pact. Certified copy. My father's seal at the bottom, and my own handwritten note in the margin, detailing the terms I'd brokered without Damien ever knowing.

Every safe border he'd ever had. Every rogue raid that never came. Every success he'd credited to his own leadership.

All of it had been me.

I folded the document once and placed it in the hollow of the boundary stone, where Marcus would find it in the morning.

Then I stepped across the territorial line.

I was done protecting him.
