Chapter 3

I called my mother at dawn.

She answered on the second ring. Her voice was clear and alert despite the early hour. She'd always been like that. Ready.

"Mathias performed a dual marking seven years ago," I said. "Rose Jenkins. Minor pack outside Los Angeles. Three pups. Celeste and Hudson knew for five years. I have documentation."

Silence. Not the empty kind. The processing kind.

"I'm initiating formal rejection proceedings," I continued. "The banquet is in two days. I'll speak the words publicly. I've already frozen bloodline resources. The elders are informed."

Another pause. Then my mother's voice, steady and cold as winter stone: "I understand."

She hung up.

I set the phone down and pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist. My wolf was quiet. Waiting.

Twenty-four hours later, I started getting calls.

The first was from Alpha Greaves of the Northern Ridge Pack. He didn't ask questions. Just said his alliance stood with my bloodline and that he'd be withdrawing his trade agreements with Ironvale effective immediately. The second was from Alpha Winters. Then Alpha Cole. Then three more I barely had time to return.

By evening, I understood what my mother had done.

She'd called them all. Every allied Alpha in the Northeast. Informed them of Mathias's forbidden dual marking before the formal proceedings were even complete. She hadn't asked for anything. Hadn't demanded loyalty. Just stated facts and let old blood recognize old blood.

My father's work was quieter but no less thorough. A formal letter arrived by courier at the Elder Council's regional office. I saw a copy. Meticulous documentation. Territorial records. Financial evidence. Bloodline law citations spanning three generations. The kind of legal precision that left no room for political maneuvering.

Mathias's mother called me once. I let it go to voicemail. She didn't leave a message.

I heard later that her calls to allied packs were going unanswered for the first time in her life. That she'd shown up at Elder Thorne's residence and been turned away at the door. That she'd lost her informal seat at the elder women's council without a single vote being cast.

Old blood didn't forget. And it didn't forgive corruption.

Mathias came back the next evening.

I was in my study updating the territorial map when I heard his car. He didn't slam the door this time. His footsteps in the hallway were measured. Almost cautious.

He knocked.

I didn't look up. "Come in."

He entered holding a folder. Set it on my desk carefully. His face was drawn. He looked like he hadn't slept.

"This is a political alliance document," he said. His voice was controlled. Diplomatic. "It formalizes Rose's position as a territorial liaison. Legitimizes the arrangement under regional pack law. I'm presenting it to the elders tomorrow."

I set down my pen. Looked at the folder. Didn't touch it.

"You're going to tell the Elder Council that your forbidden dual marking was actually a political alliance," I said quietly.

"It can be reframed—"

"You're going to present a fabricated legitimization of a spiritual violation to the regional council and expect them to accept it."

"Helena, if you would just listen—"

I picked up the folder. Opened it. Read the first page. It was professionally drafted. Probably cost him significant money to have prepared on short notice. The language was careful. Strategic.

Completely worthless.

I set it down. Met his eyes.

"If you present this document to the Elder Council," I said, "it will be the last strategic error you ever make in my presence."

His jaw tightened. "You're being unreasonable—"

"I'm being clear," I interrupted. "You violated sacred law. You maintained a secret family for seven years. You poisoned our children into choosing inheritance over integrity. And now you're attempting to gaslight the regional council into rewriting reality."

I stood. Walked to the window. The pack grounds were dark except for the perimeter lights.

"The elders already have my documentation," I said. "They have financial records. Territory registrations. Healer documents showing Rose bearing your mark. Photographs of our children running with your illegitimate pups. They know exactly what you did."

I turned back to face him. "This document won't save you. It will only prove you're willing to lie to the council's faces. And that will cost you whatever credibility you have left."

Mathias stared at me. Something shifted in his expression. Not understanding. Not yet. But the first edge of real fear.

He picked up the folder. Left without another word.

The evening before the banquet, Victor Hale knocked on my study door.

I'd known Victor for fifteen years. He'd been Mathias's Beta since before Celeste was born. Loyal. Competent. The kind of second-in-command who kept things running smoothly without needing recognition.

He stood in my doorway looking uncomfortable.

"Luna," he said. "May I speak with you?"

I gestured to the chair across from my desk. He sat.

For a long moment, he said nothing. Just looked at his hands.

"I've been going through the territorial records," he said finally. "Every alliance. Every healer lineage. Every treaty Ironvale holds." He looked up at me. "I can't find a single one that originated with Mathias rather than your bloodline."

I said nothing.

"Fifteen years," Victor continued. His voice was quiet. "I've served him for fifteen years. And I never questioned where the power came from. I just assumed—" He stopped. Shook his head. "I was wrong."

He met my eyes. "What do you need from me?"

The question hung in the air between us. Simple. Direct. The offer of a man who'd just had his entire understanding of his Alpha's authority dismantled and was choosing integrity over loyalty.

"Be at the banquet tomorrow," I said quietly. "And when it's over, decide where you stand."

Victor nodded. Stood. Paused at the door.

"For what it's worth, Luna," he said, "you built something extraordinary. And he never deserved it."

He left.

I sat in my study as the evening deepened into night. The territorial map was spread across my desk. Twenty years of alliances, annotated in my own handwriting.

Tomorrow, I would stand before every allied Alpha in the Northeast and speak the rejection words. I would sever a bond I'd honored for two decades. I would watch Mathias collapse under the weight of what he'd lost.

And I would finally, finally, take back everything I'd given.

My wolf stirred. Not howling anymore. Waiting.

Ready.
