Chapter 5

The message came six hours before dawn.

I was sitting in the storage shed, my back against the cold wall, Thomas's carved wolf resting in my palm. I wasn't sleeping. Sleep felt like a luxury I hadn't earned yet. Inside my chest, Sera moved in slow, deliberate circles—a wolf pacing the perimeter of a space she was about to claim.

The knock was soft. Deliberate. When I opened the door, Beta Soren stood in the narrow corridor, a folded letter in his hand. He didn't meet my eyes.

"From the Alpha," he said. His voice was flat. Professional. He held out the letter.

I took it. I didn't open it immediately. I just looked at Soren—at the way his shoulders were set, at the tension in his jaw that told me he didn't want to be here.

"He's waiting for a response," Soren added.

I unfolded the letter. The handwriting was Callan's—precise, controlled, the same script he used for territorial contracts. I read it standing in the doorway, the pre-dawn cold seeping through the thin fabric of my shirt.

*Ivanna,*

*The terms of the Challenge Circle, while formally sealed, were agreed upon in haste. I am prepared to offer an alternative resolution: withdraw your acceptance of the combat trial, and I will personally ensure you receive a land settlement in the western border region—modest but sufficient—and safe passage from Ironvale with no further entanglements.*

*This is a practical solution. The Circle is a spectacle neither of us requires.*

*Consider it carefully.*

*— Callan*

I read it twice. Not because I didn't understand it the first time. Because I wanted to be sure I felt exactly what I thought I felt.

Nothing.

No anger. No hurt. Just a cold, clear recognition of what this letter actually was.

Callan had realized he'd miscalculated. He'd wagered the pack house in front of three hundred witnesses—allied pack representatives, his own full pack, the Circle elder—and now, with dawn approaching and the blood-oath already sealed, he understood what losing would cost him. Not just the house. His authority. His standing. The image he'd spent years constructing.

This letter wasn't an offer. It was panic dressed as practicality.

I folded the letter once, cleanly, and handed it back to Soren.

"Tell him the oath is sealed in blood," I said. My voice was steady. Quiet. "He knows what that means."

Soren took the letter. He looked at me for the first time—really looked—and I saw something flicker across his face. Not sympathy. Recognition, maybe. Or the first edge of doubt.

He nodded once and turned to go.

I closed the door. I sat back down against the wall. Inside my chest, Sera pressed warm and certain.

*He's afraid,* she said. Not gloating. Just stating a fact.

I pressed my thumb to the dead mark on my neck—reflex, old and useless—and this time, I didn't feel the cold. I felt the absence. The space where something had lived that would never live again.

Good, I thought. Let him be afraid.

---

Dawn came slow and pale.

By the time I reached the Challenge Circle grounds, the crowd had already gathered. Three hundred wolves, maybe more. I saw representatives from Ashfen standing near the eastern perimeter—Garrett and two of his council members, their arms crossed, their expressions unreadable. I saw wolves from Duskhollow and Greymere, packs I'd negotiated with years ago, watching with the kind of quiet attention that meant they understood this was more than a territorial dispute.

I saw Ironvale's full pack assembled along the northern edge—Deltas, warriors, Omegas who had been ordered to attend. Petra was there, near the back, her arms wrapped around herself. She didn't look away when I passed.

Callan stood at the Alpha's observation point. His posture was perfect. His jaw was set. But I saw the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands were clasped behind his back just a little too tightly. Beside him, Melody wore a dress the color of winter sky, her hair pinned back to display the Luna's mark. She looked like she was attending a coronation.

Maren, the Circle elder, stood at the center of the grounds. She was ancient—gray-haired, bent slightly at the spine, but her eyes were sharp and her voice carried like a blade.

I walked through the crowd. No one moved aside. I felt their stares—some curious, some contemptuous, most simply waiting to see what would happen when a wolfless she-wolf stepped into a Circle meant for shifted combat.

I reached the center. Maren held the blood-oath scroll in both hands, the red prints from yesterday still visible on the parchment.

"The terms are sealed," Maren said, her voice cutting through the morning air. "Ivanna has staked the border cabin and all land rights attached. Melody Watkins has staked her bloodline trust-lands in the eastern valley and the Luna title. Alpha Callan has added the pack house to the wager. The blood-oath is irrevocable. The Circle opens now."

She stepped back.

Melody entered from the western edge. She moved with confidence—chin up, shoulders back, every step deliberate. When she reached the Circle's center, she shifted.

The transformation was smooth, practiced. Her sleek brown wolf emerged in seconds—Beta-lineage strength, fast and trained, muscles coiled and ready. She was beautiful in the way predators are beautiful. Efficient. Deadly.

She circled me slowly. Her amber eyes locked on mine. The crowd murmured—low, anticipatory.

I stood in human form. Unshifted. Motionless.

Melody's wolf lowered her head. Her lips pulled back from her teeth. The charge was coming. I could see it in the way her haunches tensed, in the way her claws dug into the packed earth.

Inside my chest, Sera moved.

Not a flicker. Not a surge. A certainty.

*Now.*

Melody's wolf launched forward.

And I let her come.
