Chapter 5

Maverick showed up in Moonveil territory on a Thursday.

I didn't know about it until later. I was inside Lorenzo's house, reorganizing the pantry because he'd been stacking canned goods with no system whatsoever. But Callum mentioned it that evening when he stopped by for a perimeter check.

"Your old Alpha came through this morning," he said, leaning against the porch railing. "Courtesy call, supposedly. But he spent twenty minutes on the border trail before he left."

I stopped wiping down the counter. "Why?"

Callum shrugged. "Didn't say. Just walked the perimeter. Looked like he was searching for something."

I didn't ask what. I already knew.

My scent would still be there. Faint, but present. Stronger than whatever traces he'd been standing in Silverfang hallways trying to find.

I went back to wiping the counter. "Thanks for letting me know."

Callum studied me for a moment. Then he nodded and left.

I didn't tell Lorenzo. There was nothing to tell. Maverick had driven to another pack's territory, walked a trail, and left. That was all.

But I thought about it more than I wanted to. The image of him standing on that border trail, finally catching the scent he'd ignored for years, his wolf surging forward with recognition he couldn't deny anymore.

Too late.

I felt nothing about it. Not satisfaction. Not vindication. Just a quiet, settled certainty that whatever he was feeling now didn't matter.

I finished the counter and went to start dinner.

The horror movie was Lorenzo's idea.

"Sensory engagement," he'd said that morning, perfectly deadpan. "The journal recommends shared emotional experiences. Horror movies trigger adrenaline. It's therapeutic."

I'd looked at him over my coffee. "You hate horror movies."

"I tolerate them."

"You do aggressive commentary through the entire runtime because you're uncomfortable."

"That's engagement," he'd said.

So we ended up on the couch at eight-thirty with something called *The Hollow* playing on the TV. Lorenzo had made popcorn. I'd brought a blanket.

The movie was decent. Atmospheric. Lots of long shots of empty hallways and slow camera pans that built tension without cheap jump scares.

Then there was a scene in a basement. A woman trapped. The camera tight on her face as something moved in the dark behind her.

I flinched. Not the performance kind. The real kind.

Lorenzo's hand moved immediately to the remote. The screen went black.

I blinked. Turned to look at him.

He was already scrolling through the menu, his expression neutral. "This one's boring anyway," he said. "Let's try something else."

He put on a comedy. Something light. British humor and dry dialogue.

I stared at the side of his face. He didn't look back. Just settled into the couch and ate popcorn like nothing had happened.

But something had.

I realized, with a small jolt, that the distance between us on the couch had shrunk. We weren't touching. But we were close. Maybe six inches. I didn't remember moving. I didn't think he did either.

Neither of us moved away.

We watched the rest of the movie in silence. His shoulder was warm near mine. Solid. Present.

When the credits rolled, I stood and took the popcorn bowl to the kitchen.

Lorenzo followed with the blanket.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

He folded the blanket and set it on the counter. "For what?"

"You know what."

He looked at me then. Really looked. His eyes were dark and steady.

"You're welcome," he said.

We stood there in the kitchen for a moment. The air felt heavy. Charged.

Then he said goodnight and went upstairs.

I stayed in the kitchen for a long time, staring at nothing, my pulse doing something complicated I didn't have a name for.

The storm rolled in just after midnight.

I was still awake, reading in bed, when the first crack of thunder rattled the windows. The lights flickered once. Twice.

Then they went out.

The darkness was absolute. No ambient light from the hallway. No glow from the alarm clock. Just the sound of rain hammering against the glass and the low rumble of thunder moving closer.

I got up, felt my way to the door, and went downstairs.

Lorenzo was already in the living room. I could see his silhouette against the window, backlit by occasional lightning.

"Power's out," he said.

"I noticed."

He moved toward the kitchen. I followed. He found a flashlight in one of the drawers and set it on the counter, angled up so it cast a soft glow across the room.

We stood there in the near-dark. The rain was loud. The storm was right overhead now.

And then I caught it.

A scent. Rolling off his skin. Dark cedar and rain.

It hit me like a physical thing. My wolf surged forward, alert and focused and suddenly, overwhelmingly certain.

Mate.

I froze.

Across from me, Lorenzo had gone perfectly still. His eyes were glowing. Gold. Bright in the darkness.

His voice, when he spoke, was stripped of all deflection. Quiet. Raw.

"Honeysuckle," he said. "You smell like honeysuckle."

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move.

The bond snapped into place between us. Not gentle. Not gradual. Just there. Electric. Undeniable. A pull so strong it felt like gravity.

We stood there in the dark. Not touching. But irrevocably changed.

The storm raged outside. Inside, the silence was deafening.

Lorenzo's jaw was tight. His hands were braced against the counter like he was holding himself in place.

I didn't move either.

Because if I moved, I didn't know what would happen. And I wasn't ready. Not yet.

So we stayed. In the dark. With the rain and the thunder and the scent of cedar and honeysuckle wrapping around us like something alive.

When the storm finally passed, the power came back on.

The lights were too bright. Too sudden.

Lorenzo looked at me. I looked back.

Neither of us said anything.

Then he turned and went upstairs.

I stayed in the kitchen until dawn, staring at the place where he'd stood, my wolf howling inside me with a single, undeniable truth.

He was mine.

And he'd known all along.
