Chapter 2

I presented the schedule on the third morning.

It was printed on actual paper, organized by time blocks, with categories labeled in neat columns: Dawn Trail Runs. Basic Sparring. Evening Sensory Engagement Activities. I'd spent an hour the night before cross-referencing wolf reconnection therapy literature Ophelia had sent me and pretending I wasn't overthinking it.

Lorenzo was leaning against the kitchen counter with his usual protein bar when I walked in. He took the schedule from my hand, scanned it with one eyebrow raised, and said, "Are you planning to charge by the hour?"

"I already am," I replied.

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he pulled a pen from the drawer, signed the bottom of the page, and handed it back.

"Professional," he said.

"Clinical," I agreed.

Neither of us smiled. We both knew we were lying.

The first dawn trail run happened the next morning at six.

I met him at the edge of the property line where the gravel driveway gave way to packed dirt and tree roots. He was already stretching, which surprised me. Most wolves who claimed dormant connections didn't bother with warm-ups.

"Ready?" I asked.

He nodded.

We ran.

The trail wound through dense forest, the kind of terrain that required focus—uneven ground, exposed roots, sudden drops. I kept my pace moderate. Lorenzo matched it easily. His breathing was controlled. His stride was efficient.

I watched him without making it obvious.

Halfway through, the trail sloped downward. Sharp descent. Loose gravel. The kind of terrain that tested knee stability.

Lorenzo's gait shifted. Just slightly. A subtle compensation in his right leg, the weight redistributed a fraction too early on each step. Most people wouldn't notice. Most people weren't looking.

I filed it away and said nothing.

When we finished, he was barely winded. I handed him a water bottle from my pack.

"Tomorrow," I said. "Same time."

"Same trail?"

"We'll see."

That night, I pulled out the territory maps Ophelia had included in the welcome packet and studied the alternate routes. There were three that avoided steep descents entirely. I marked one in pencil.

The next morning, I led us east instead of north.

Lorenzo noticed immediately. He didn't say anything for the first mile. Then, as we crested a ridge with a view of the lake, he said, "Different route."

"Variety," I said.

"Right."

We ran in silence after that.

When we got back to the house, there was coffee waiting on the counter. Strong. No sugar. Exactly the way I took it.

I stared at the mug.

Lorenzo walked past me toward the shower, his expression unreadable.

"Thanks," I said.

He didn't turn around. "You're welcome."

Neither of us mentioned the knee. Neither of us mentioned the coffee.

But something had shifted. Something quiet and deliberate and entirely unspoken.

Callum Reyes found me on my second week.

I was walking the property perimeter—part of my self-assigned duties, though Lorenzo hadn't asked me to—when a male stepped out from the tree line. Mid-twenties. Lean build. Moonveil Pack scent.

He didn't look hostile. Just watchful.

"Ella Woods," he said. It wasn't a question.

"That's me."

"Callum Reyes. Moonveil warrior."

I nodded. "Nice to meet you."

He studied me for a moment. Then he said, "Ophelia Knight placed you here."

"She did."

"Why?"

I kept my expression neutral. "Lorenzo's wolf is dormant. I'm helping him reconnect."

"And your background?"

"Silverfang Pack. Unranked. No formal training in wolf therapy, but I read a lot. It's a condition."

Callum's mouth twitched. Almost a smile. "You always this direct?"

"You always this suspicious?"

"When it matters," he said.

I looked at him. Really looked. His posture was relaxed, but his weight was balanced. Ready. His eyes tracked movement at the edges of his vision. He was good at his job.

"Why does a wolf-dormant loner need a perimeter guard rotation?" I asked. "Forty-minute intervals. Clockwise pattern. Three different wolves, rotating shifts."

Callum went very still.

"I notice things," I said quietly. "It's also a condition."

For a long moment, he didn't answer. Then he said, "I'll pass that along."

"You do that."

He left without another word.

That night, Lorenzo was quieter than usual during dinner. I'd made stir-fry. He ate methodically, his gaze distant.

"Callum said you clocked the perimeter rotation," he said finally.

I set down my fork. "I did."

"Most people wouldn't notice."

"I'm not most people."

He looked at me then. Really looked. His eyes were dark and unreadable in the low kitchen light.

"No," he said softly. "You're not."

I held his gaze. My wolf stirred faintly. Not urgently. Just... aware.

"Is there something I should know?" I asked.

Lorenzo leaned back in his chair. "Callum's protective. That's all."

"Of a dormant wolf."

"Of me," he corrected.

It wasn't an answer. Not really. But it was more than he'd given me before.

I nodded slowly. "Okay."

We finished dinner in silence.

Later, as I was washing dishes, Lorenzo appeared beside me with a towel. He dried each plate I handed him without comment. The rhythm was easy. Practiced. Like we'd done this a hundred times before instead of just twice.

When we finished, he set the last plate in the cabinet and said, "Three paragraphs."

I blinked. "What?"

"The journal. I wrote three paragraphs today."

I stared at him. "You're serious."

"I signed the schedule," he said. "I keep my word."

I didn't know what to say to that. So I just nodded.

He left the kitchen without waiting for a response.

I stood there for a long time, staring at the empty doorway, my hands still damp from the sink.

Something was happening. Something I didn't have a name for yet.

But I felt it. In the rerouted trail. In the coffee made exactly right. In the way he dried dishes without being asked.

In the quiet, accumulating attentiveness of two people who were pretending this was clinical.

And failing.
