Chapter 2

The Wolf's Rest sat at the edge of neutral territory, a squat stone building with yellow light spilling from its windows. I could hear voices inside—laughter, the clink of glasses, the low rumble of conversation. Pack wolves. Travelers. Maybe even a few rogues like me.

I stood in the rain outside the door, one hand pressed against my ribs where the fractures screamed with every breath. My clothes were still stiff with dried blood. The cauterized scar on my neck throbbed beneath the soaked fabric of my collar.

This was the one place even a rogue could claim temporary refuge. Neutral ground meant no Alpha could use their tone to command. No pack law applied here. Just coin and common decency.

I pushed the door open.

The warmth hit me first. Then the smell—roasted meat, ale, wet fur, and wood smoke. Conversations died as heads turned toward the door. I kept my chin up and walked to the bar, each step sending pain lancing through my ribs.

The barkeeper—a grizzled wolf with gray streaking his beard—looked me over. His nostrils flared. "We don't serve—"

"I can pay," I said quietly. I pulled a few crumpled bills from my pocket and laid them on the bar. "Just a room. One night."

He didn't touch the money.

A chair scraped across the floor behind me.

"That won't be necessary."

Adam's voice.

I went very still.

Footsteps crossed the room. I didn't turn. I kept my eyes on the barkeeper's face and watched his expression shift—recognition, then deference, then something that looked almost like pity.

Adam stopped beside me. Mae was with him, a white bandage stark across her face where the silver had burned. She stayed half a step behind him, her hand resting possessively on his arm.

"This wolf," Adam said, his voice carrying across the now-silent room, "is curse-touched."

The words landed like stones in still water.

I felt every eye in the tavern lock onto me. Heard the sharp intake of breath from the table nearest the door. Saw the barkeeper's hand move slowly away from the bills I'd laid down.

Adam's tone shifted—not quite the Alpha command, but close enough. Authoritative. Final. "She brought sickness to Ironveil Pack. Drove off game. Weakened bloodlines. We cast her out to protect what remains."

Lies. All of it. But in neutral territory, with no pack to contradict him, his word was law.

Mae leaned closer to him, her voice loud enough to carry. "She attacked me unprovoked. Look at my face." She gestured to the bandage. "Silver. She's dangerous."

The barkeeper pulled my money off the bar and pushed it back toward me. "We don't serve your kind here."

I looked around the room. Every face had turned away. The wolves near the door shifted their chairs to put more distance between us. A female at the corner table pulled her pup closer, shielding him with her body.

No one met my eyes.

My wolf stirred—weak, battered, but furious. *Remember them,* she snarled. *Every single face.*

I picked up my money. Turned. Walked back toward the door.

Adam didn't move. He just watched me go, his expression utterly blank.

Mae smiled.

The rain hit me the moment I stepped outside. Cold and relentless, soaking through what was left of my clothes. I kept walking. Past the hitching posts. Past the line of motorcycles parked under the overhang. Into the alley behind the tavern where the shadows were thick and the mud sucked at my boots.

I made it maybe twenty feet before I heard footsteps behind me.

Two of them. Male. Their scent hit me a second later—unwashed fur, stale sweat, and something sharper. Rogue wolves.

"Hey," one of them called. "You okay?"

I kept walking.

"We saw what happened in there." Closer now. "That was rough. Real rough."

My wolf growled a warning I couldn't voice.

A hand closed around my arm. Yanked me backward.

I spun, pain exploding through my ribs, and came face to face with a wolf twice my size. His eyes were yellow in the dim light. His grin showed too many teeth.

"Packless," he said. "Injured. No wolf showing." He inhaled deeply. "And you smell like you're barely holding on."

The second one circled behind me. Blocked the alley exit.

"We could help you," the first one continued. His hand slid down my arm. "Keep you safe. All you gotta do is—"

I reached for the bond.

The mind-link—that last residual thread between Adam and me, the one that flickered faint and dying but hadn't quite gone dark. I threw everything I had into it.

*Help me. Please. They're going to—*

The link severed.

Not gradually. Not gently. Adam cut it like a knife through rope, and the recoil slammed into my skull so hard I gasped. The thread died. The space where it had been went silent—absolute, final, empty.

He'd severed it mid-scream.

The rogue's hand tightened on my arm. "No one's coming, sweetheart."

Something in me broke open.

I drove my knee into his groin. He doubled over with a choked grunt, and I ripped free, stumbling backward into the second wolf. He grabbed for me. I bit down on his hand—tasted blood—and he howled. My ribs screamed. I didn't care.

I ran.

Blindly. Through the alley, into the trees, branches tearing at my face and arms. Rain pounded down. My lungs burned. Behind me, I heard shouting, then the wet sound of wolves shifting.

I pushed deeper into the forest.

No pack borders here. No territory. Just endless trees and darkness and rain.

My foot caught on a root. I went down hard, skidding through mud and dead leaves. Tried to get up. Couldn't. My ribs were on fire. My vision blurred.

I could hear them behind me. Getting closer.

My wolf whimpered—small and broken and so, so tired.

I pressed my cheek against the wet ground and closed my eyes.

The rain kept falling.
