Chapter 2

Nathan's face went blank the way a wall goes blank — not empty, just closed. Then I felt him reach for the bond.

It was the first time in nine years I recognized the sensation for what it was. A hand sliding down the inside of my ribs, cold and familiar, groping for the leash he had always assumed was there. My mark burned white-hot on the side of my neck.

"Anya." His voice dropped into that register — the Alpha tone I had spent a decade obeying without noticing I was obeying. "Silence. Kneel. You will not speak another word."

The command hit me like a truck.

My knees buckled. My jaw locked. For one heartbeat I felt the old, familiar collapse — the good Luna folding herself small, mouth closing around whatever she had been about to say, spine bending because the bond told it to bend.

And then something underneath me answered.

It was not a voice. It was not a thought. It was a heat — enormous, ancient, patient — rising up through the soles of my feet like a floor I hadn't known was there was suddenly pushing back. It filled my chest. It filled my throat. It filled the space behind my eyes until the dining room bleached to white.

*No,* something inside me said. Not in words. In bone.

My spine cracked audibly. I heard Khloe scream from very far away.

The shift didn't ask my permission. It tore through me — ribs unlocking, jaw lengthening, skin splitting into fur the color of moonlight on snow. I felt every one of the nine years the wolfsbane had held her down come loose at once, and she came up through me like a wave breaking a dam. Bigger than I had ever imagined a wolf could be. Taller at the shoulder than Nathan was standing.

I landed on four paws in the wreckage of the dining table.

The aura hit the room a half-second after I did. I felt it leave me the way you feel breath leave — a dense, rolling weight that filled every corner and pressed down. Elena dropped. Her knees folded under her and she went to the floor with a small, stunned sound, hair finally coming loose from its pin. Sable staggered back into his chair and stayed there, one hand at his throat. Khloe was on the floor too, both arms wrapped around her stomach, sobbing without noise.

Nathan was the only one still standing.

He was staring at me with the specific blankness of a man who has just discovered the floor was never there. His Alpha tone was still hanging in the air between us, and I could see the moment it registered on his face that it had not worked. That it had shattered. That the command had struck something inside me that outranked him at a level his bloodline could not reach.

His mouth opened. Nothing came out.

I did not attack. I did not move. I stood in the ruin of his dining room with my silver eyes on his face and I let him look at me. Let him see her. The wolf he had spent nine years trying to kill, standing over him twice his size, breathing.

He was the one who looked away first.

I turned and walked out through the door I had kicked open, and the cold hit my fur like a benediction.

---

She went back under before I made it home.

It wasn't a choice — it was exhaustion, the way a candle that has been snuffed for a decade cannot burn steady the first night it's lit. Somewhere on the dark highway between Blackridge and Silverfang I felt her fold back into me, trembling, and I stumbled naked into the backseat of my own car for the sweater and jeans I kept in a duffel there. My hands shook so hard I couldn't get the zipper up.

But she left something on my skin.

I could feel it as I drove — a low hum along my arms, a pressure at the back of my neck. Not the wolf herself. Her signature. The static of a bloodline that had finally been introduced to the air.

The two Delta guards at the pack house door flinched when I stepped into the light.

They didn't know why. I watched it happen in real time — the small backward jerk, the way their eyes dropped without their permission, the confusion when they tried to lift them again and couldn't quite. One of them, Beau, had known me for nine years. He had carried groceries in from my car. He had teased Cason about his front teeth. He looked at me now like I was standing behind a pane of glass he couldn't see through.

I did not explain. I did not have the words yet, and even if I had, I would not have spent them on the door.

"Wards," I said quietly. "I'm changing them. Nathan's access is revoked from the pack house effective now. Cason's wing, the kitchen, the study — all of it. If he arrives, he stands on the porch."

Beau's throat worked. "Luna, the Alpha—"

"I am the Luna," I said. It was the first time in nine years I had used the title to pull rank inside my own house. It landed heavier than I meant it to. Beau's chin dipped without his consent. "Change the wards."

I walked past them into the house that had been a stage set for nine years and was, for the first time, mine.

Cason was asleep. I stood in his doorway longer than I needed to, watching the small rise and fall of his shoulder under the blanket, letting the fact of him steady me. Then I closed his door, warded it separately with a Luna's imprint I had never once bothered to lay, and went down to the kitchen.

The ledger was where I had left it. The pressed moonflower slid out from between the pages when I opened it, and I looked at it for a long moment before I put it back.

Then I sat down, and I began to write.
