Chapter 3

I was arranging the last jar of wolfsbane salve when the noise in the hall changed.

It didn't stop. It just shifted. Conversations faltered mid-sentence. Laughter cut off. The hum of political maneuvering dropped to something quieter, sharper—the sound of wolves sensing a predator.

I kept my head down. My hands moved automatically, lining up the jars by size. Beside me, Petra stiffened.

"Rayna," she said quietly.

I didn't look up. "What?"

"The Lycan King is walking this way."

My hands froze.

I'd never seen the Lycan King. I'd heard stories—every wolf had. Alaric Voss. The sovereign who ruled over every Alpha, whose bloodline stretched back to the first wolves blessed by the Moon Goddess herself. But Lycan royalty didn't speak to healer's assistants. They didn't even see us.

I forced my hands to keep moving. "He's not coming here."

"He is."

The crowd parted. I felt it more than saw it—the ripple of bodies stepping aside, the sudden space opening in the packed hall. And then I felt the aura.

It hit like a physical weight. Heavy. Ancient. The kind of power that didn't need to announce itself because every wolf in the room could feel it pressing against their skin.

I looked up.

The Lycan King stood ten feet away. He was tall, broad-shouldered, his hair silver-gray despite a face that looked no older than fifty. His eyes were pale amber, and they were locked on me with an intensity that made my breath catch.

He wasn't moving. He was just staring.

Beside him, a younger man in formal Beta dress—his Beta, I realized—reached out and touched his arm. "Your Majesty?"

The Lycan King didn't respond. His nostrils flared. His hands, clasped behind his back, began to tremble.

I took a step back. My hip hit the medical table. The jars rattled.

"Your Majesty," the Beta said again, more urgently.

The Lycan King moved. He crossed the distance between us in three strides, and suddenly he was right there, close enough that I could see the fine lines around his eyes, the way his jaw was clenched so tight the muscle jumped.

He was looking at my face like he was searching for something.

"This scent," he said. His voice was rough. Low. It carried the weight of decades. "Wild jasmine. Frost."

I didn't understand. I didn't have a scent anymore. Wolfless she-wolves didn't carry the pheromone signatures that marked bloodlines. We were blank. Invisible.

"I don't—" I started.

He raised one hand. Drew a claw across his own palm with deliberate, ceremonial gravity. Blood welled, dark and rich.

The Beta inhaled sharply. "Your Majesty, what are you—"

The Lycan King extended his bleeding hand toward me. Not touching. Just close. And I felt it.

A pull. Deep in my chest. Like something sleeping had just opened one eye.

His blood sang.

It wasn't a sound. It was a resonance. A vibration that started in my bones and spread outward, calling to something buried so deep I'd forgotten it was there.

My wrist burned. I looked down. Beneath my skin, faint silver lines were glowing—veins lighting up like threads of starlight.

The Lycan King's eyes widened. His hand trembled harder.

"Rayna Voss," he said.

The name hit me like a slap. I'd never heard it before. My name was Rayna. Just Rayna. No last name. Orphan wolves didn't have bloodline names.

But the way he said it—like he'd been holding it in his mouth for years, like it cost him something to speak it aloud—made my throat close.

"This scent," he said again, and his voice cracked. "This is my blood. You are my daughter."

The hall went silent.

I couldn't breathe. My chest was too tight. The pull in my bones was getting stronger, spreading through my ribs, down my spine, into my legs.

"I'm not—" I whispered. "I'm nobody. I'm just—"

The suppression broke.

It didn't ease. It didn't fade. It shattered.

Pain exploded through my body. My bones cracked. My skin burned. I doubled over, gasping, and silver fur erupted along my forearms—not the patchy, painful shifting I'd known in Shadowvale, but something vast and unstoppable.

I heard Petra shout. Heard the Beta yell something. But the sound was already distant, muffled, because my body wasn't my body anymore.

My spine arched. My jaw elongated. My hands hit the floor—no, paws hit the floor, massive and clawed and glowing faintly silver.

The shift tore through me like wildfire. Every suppressed year, every dose of wolfsbane, every moment Hope had tried to surface and failed—it all came roaring out at once.

And then I was standing on four legs.

The world looked different. Sharper. The colors were wrong—too bright, too saturated. I could smell everything. The sweat on a hundred wolves. The wine in crystal glasses. The fear.

I turned my head. Caught my reflection in the polished marble pillar.

A massive silver wolf stared back. Nearly twice the size of any wolf I'd ever seen. Fur that caught the light like frost. Eyes that glowed pale amber.

My aura exploded outward.

I didn't mean to release it. I didn't even know I had one. But it blasted out from my body like a shockwave, and every wolf in the great hall dropped.

Alphas. Betas. Warriors in formal dress. They hit their knees. Necks bared. Heads bowed.

Submission.

I could feel it in the air—their wolves recognizing something bigger, older, more powerful than anything they'd ever encountered.

And across the hall, through the forest of kneeling bodies, I saw him.

Kayden.

On his knees. White-faced. The four scars on his jaw standing out like brands.

Beside him, Vienna gripped his arm, her face twisted in shock.

The dead mate bond in my chest—the bond I thought had been severed completely—flared with sudden, searing pain.

Not mine.

His.

I could feel it through the phantom thread still connecting us. The agony of the bond recognizing the wolf it had once been joined to. The biological punishment of a severed connection trying to snap back into place and finding only scar tissue.

Kayden's mouth opened. No sound came out.

I held his gaze.

The Lycan King's voice cut through the silence, steady and absolute.

"Lycan Princess Rayna Voss. My daughter. My blood."

The scar on my neck—where his mating mark had been—glowed faintly silver.

And Kayden could not look away.
