After My Alpha Framed Me for Poisoning Our Pup Novel Cover

After My Alpha Framed Me for Poisoning Our Pup

At 9:47 on a Tuesday, the mate bond snapped sideways. Julian's wolf surged forward with a hunger I'd felt barely twice in three years of marriage—but it wasn't reaching for me. My mark blazed, then went cold and slack, a rope released at the other end. I tried to hold it, palm pressed to my neck. I couldn't. It swung away like a compass needle finding true north down the front hall. I left the linens where they fell and walked. Then they accused me of poisoning our pup—and the woman he chose was waiting to watch me fall.

Chapter 5

He announced it at the evening gathering, in the great room where the pack took their meals together, and I understood before he finished the first sentence that he had rehearsed it with her.

"Analia will serve as acting household coordinator," Julian said, one hand loose at his side, the other resting at the small of her back, "while the Luna recovers from the stress of recent events."

Recovers. The word landed neatly. Nobody could argue with it. Nobody could deny me the dignity of a rest I had not asked for.

The pack did not answer. Forks stayed where they were. A pup somewhere down the long table whimpered and was hushed. I stood along the wall where he had placed me, hands folded, spine straight, and I watched Marcus step forward to read out the transfer of duties in the flat voice a Beta uses when the words are not his.

His jaw worked between each sentence. I could see the muscle move under the skin.

Soren, at the servers' door, closed his hands into fists so tight the knuckles went white. He looked once at the floor and once at me and then back at the floor.

Analia lowered her eyes when Julian named her. She shook her head very slightly, a small no, a woman being asked to accept a burden she did not want. Her fingers rose to her throat. Her voice was warm and shy.

"If it would help Luisa," she said. "Only for as long as she needs."

Her hand slid down and settled on Julian's arm.

Her eyes lifted and found mine across the room.

I did not look away.

I held her gaze. One. Two. Three.

Her smile did not move. Her fingers on his sleeve did. They tightened. I saw the tendon jump in the back of her hand.

I looked away then, and only then, and not because she had won. I looked away because I was counting, and I was almost at the number I needed, and there was no reason to spend one more second than that on her face.

Julian did not notice. Julian had not looked at me once during the entire announcement.

---

He left her room again that night.

I felt it the way you feel a door open somewhere far off in a cold house — a shift in the pressure of the air, a thinning. The bond between us pulled out long and fine, wire-thin, drawn away toward another part of the pack house where his wolf was and mine was not.

I lay on my back in the bed I no longer shared and stared at the ceiling.

My hand went to the mark on my neck the way it always did.

And stopped.

It did not feel the way a mark should feel. Not warm. Not tender. Not even sore. It felt numb — the flat, distant numbness of a nerve gone quiet under too much weight, the kind of numbness that comes just before something you have relied on for years stops working entirely.

Under my ribs the wolf stirred.

Not in fury this time. Not the hot silver push of the healer's corridor. Something slower. Something almost gentle. She rose against the inside of my chest and pressed there, warm and enormous, and I felt — I could not describe it any other way — I felt her *recognize* something. The numbness in my neck. The wire-thin bond. The cold place where warmth used to sit.

As if she were telling me, patiently, in a voice below words: *That was never yours. What is dying is not you. Only the part that was never yours to lose.*

I took my hand away from the mark.

I did not touch it again that night.

I slept, eventually, with one palm flat on the sheet beside me where his body used to be, and the other pressed lightly over the place under my ribs where she was waiting.

---

It happened in the middle of the afternoon.

I was crossing the main hall with a stack of clean linens because that was what my duties were now, and half the pack was there — wolves passing through between meals, two Deltas polishing the long table, Marcus at the base of the staircase with a ledger open in his hands, Julian just come in from the west door with snow still melting on his shoulders.

Analia was at the top of the stairs.

I saw her before she moved. She was standing very still, one hand light on the banister, her eyes down on the hall below, and I understood in the half second before she did it exactly what I was about to watch happen.

She waited until Julian looked up.

Then she screamed and threw herself down the stairs.

The scream tore through the pack house like something ripping. The fall was — I will remember this — the fall was *controlled*, her body loose in exactly the right places, one arm curled tight around her stomach the whole way down. She struck the bottom step and crumpled on the marble and lay there gasping, both hands pressed low on her belly, her face already wet.

"She pushed me — Julian — she pushed me — the pup — I think I'm — oh Goddess, the pup—"

The hall detonated.

Wolves rushed. Someone shouted for Elara. Marcus's ledger hit the floor.

I did not move. I stood with the linens still in my arms and I watched, through the wire-thin bond, Julian's wolf come awake.

He did not ask. He did not pause. He did not turn his head one inch to look at his own wife's face across the hall.

He crossed the marble in six strides.

And his hand closed around my throat.
