Chapter 3

The vehicles started arriving at dawn.

I watched from a narrow window in the servants' wing. The corridor was cold. My breath fogged the glass. But I stayed there for hours, cataloguing every arrival.

Six packs. Six Alphas. Their SUVs rolled through the Silvercrest gates one after another. Black. Polished. Flags mounted on the hoods bearing pack insignia I recognized from the regional gatherings I'd attended a lifetime ago. Redclaw. Stonepine. Ironvale. Thornridge. Ashford. Nightwater.

My parents arrived with the Ironvale convoy at eight-thirty. I saw my father step out first. He wore formal elder robes. Deep green. The territorial merger's dividends visible in every thread. My mother followed. Composed. Elegant. She smoothed her sleeves and walked toward the pack house entrance like she owned the ground beneath her feet.

I pressed my forehead against the glass and felt nothing.

By ten AM the courtyard was full. Betas. Enforcers. Pack members dressed in ceremonial clothing. The stage had been erected overnight — a raised platform with steps on both sides and a podium at the center. Two Silvercrest enforcers stood at the back corners. Arms crossed. Eyes forward.

I noted the exit. Stage left. Twelve feet from the podium. Open archway leading directly to the outer courtyard. Unblocked.

I memorized it.

Declan moved through the crowd like water. Shaking hands. Clasping shoulders. His voice carried through the open windows. Warm. Diplomatic. The Golden Alpha performing exactly what everyone expected. Ruby walked beside him in Luna furs — white and silver, draped across her shoulders like a crown. She smiled. Touched arms. Played gracious hostess with the precision of someone who had rehearsed every gesture.

My parents sat in the third row. Front section. Positions of honor. Gerald kept his eyes down. Elara sat with her spine straight and her hands folded in her lap.

I watched until my legs went numb. Then I turned away from the window and went back to the locked room.

---

Ruby came an hour before the ceremony.

I was sitting on the floor when I heard the lock turn. I looked up. Expected Declan.

Got Ruby instead.

She closed the door behind her. Stood there for a moment. The Luna warmth she'd been performing all morning dropped off her face like a mask removed.

What was left underneath was sharp. Exposed. Ugly.

"I need you to understand something," she said.

I didn't answer.

She stepped closer. Her voice stayed level. Controlled. "If you try to speak before Declan finishes the rejection vow, the enforcers will restrain you. Silver chains. In front of every Alpha in that courtyard. You'll look exactly like the feral, unstable wolf Declan's been protecting everyone from for ten years."

She paused. Watched me.

"Do you understand?"

I held her gaze. Said nothing.

Something flickered across her face. Uncertainty. Just for a second.

She didn't like my silence. A woman preparing to surrender was supposed to beg. Cry. Argue. Plead.

I did none of those things.

I just looked at her.

Her jaw tightened. She turned and walked to the door. Her hand was on the handle when she stopped.

"You should have stayed in the cabin," she said quietly. "It would have been easier."

Then she left.

The lock turned behind her.

I sat in the silence and reached inward. Found that faint flicker of warmth. Solace. Barely there. But there.

*Soon,* I thought. *Just a little longer.*

The warmth pulsed once. Weak. Fragile.

But alive.

---

They came for me at two PM.

Two enforcers. The same ones who'd dragged me from the cabin. They didn't speak. Just opened the door and gestured.

I stood. My legs shook but they held.

They walked me through the servants' corridors. Up the back stairs. Through a side door that opened directly onto the stage's right wing.

The noise hit me first. Hundreds of voices. The assembled packs filling the courtyard. I couldn't see them yet but I could hear them. Feel them.

One enforcer gripped my elbow. Guided me forward.

I stepped onto the stage.

The crowd went quiet.

Not all at once. It rippled. Started at the front rows and spread backward like a wave. Within seconds the courtyard was silent.

I stood there. Center stage. The afternoon sun was bright. Too bright. I tucked my hands into my sleeves. The wolfsbane vial pressed cold against my forearm.

I was thin enough that my collarbone cast shadows. I knew how I looked. Gaunt. Scarred. Broken.

That was the point.

Declan stepped up beside me. He didn't look at me. He faced the crowd.

"Thank you all for coming," he said.

His voice carried. Smooth. Controlled. The Golden Alpha addressing his peers.

"Leadership requires difficult choices," he continued. "Choices that weigh on us. Choices we make not for ourselves, but for the safety and welfare of those we are sworn to protect."

He paused. Let the words settle.

"Ten years ago, I made such a choice."

I watched the crowd. Six Alphas sat in the front row. Their Betas beside them. Their expressions carefully neutral. My parents sat three rows back. Gerald stared at his hands. Elara's face was composed. Empty.

Ruby sat front row center. Positioned perfectly. The angle she'd practiced for a decade.

"My fated mate's wolf was unstable," Declan said. "Dangerous. To herself. To others. I made the decision to protect her. To provide her with the care and containment she needed. It was not easy. But it was necessary."

He turned slightly. Looked at me for the first time.

"Today, we close that chapter," he said. "For her safety. And for the pack's future."

He reached into his jacket. Pulled out the Luna Accord transfer. Unfolded it once.

Set it on the podium.

The document sat there between us. Official. Stamped. Waiting for my signature.

Declan's eyes met mine.

He was waiting for me to break. To beg. To give him the performance he needed.

I looked at him.

Then I looked past him. At the exit. Stage left. Twelve feet. Unblocked.

I felt the vial against my forearm. Felt Solace's faint warmth deep inside.

Declan's jaw tightened.

He turned back to the crowd.

"I, Declan Austin, Alpha of Silvercrest—"

He began the rejection vow.

And I stood there. Silent. Waiting.

For the words that would either kill me or set me free.
