Chapter 3

The pack gathering was called at midday. No warning. Just Beta Elena's voice echoing through the corridors: "All members to the main hall. Alpha's command."

I was scrubbing the second-floor landing when the announcement came. I set down my brush, wiped my hands on my work apron, and followed the stream of wolves heading toward the hall.

I stayed in the back row. That's where Omegas stood now. Where I stood.

Grayson was already at the front, shoulders squared, Alpha presence filling the space like a physical weight. Saylor stood three paces behind him. Soft blue sweater. Hair loose. Eyes down.

The room quieted.

"Silverfang Pack," Grayson said. His voice carried that Alpha tone—not quite a command, but close enough that every wolf straightened instinctively. "Saylor West will remain under my personal protection indefinitely."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Not surprise. Confirmation.

"She is a lone wolf seeking sanctuary," he continued. "Vulnerable. Without pack or family. It is our duty—my duty—to ensure her safety." He paused. His gaze swept the room. "I'm assigning a guard rotation to her quarters. Any pack member who disturbs her peace answers to me directly."

The murmur died.

I watched Saylor's face. She looked down at her hands, fingers twisting together slightly. Her shoulders trembled—just a fraction, just enough to read as overwhelmed gratitude. Her lips parted like she wanted to speak but couldn't find the words.

Perfect.

But I saw it. The flicker underneath. A fraction of a second where the trembling stopped and her mouth tightened at the corners—not with emotion, but with satisfaction. Like a chess player watching the opponent move exactly where she wanted.

Then it was gone. Replaced by that soft, helpless expression.

No one else caught it. They were all watching Grayson.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Hard.

Two more days. Roane would be back in two more days.

I could wait.

Grayson dismissed the gathering. Wolves filtered out in clusters, voices low. I turned to leave.

"Vivian."

I stopped. Looked back.

Beta Elena stood near the door, arms crossed. "Kitchen rotation. Dinner prep starts in an hour. Don't be late."

"Understood," I said.

She walked away without waiting for a response.

I went back to the second-floor landing. Picked up my brush. Kept scrubbing.

Dinner prep was the usual chaos. Pots boiling. Knives chopping. Omegas moving in tight choreography to get everything plated on time.

I was assigned serving duty. Which meant carrying heavy trays into the dining hall and refilling dishes as they emptied.

I tied on a clean apron and loaded the first tray. Roasted meat. Vegetables. Bread still steaming from the oven. The tray weighed at least twenty pounds. My arms shook slightly as I lifted it.

I pushed through the kitchen door into the dining hall.

The room was already full. Wolves at every table. Conversation humming. Grayson sat at the head table with Saylor beside him.

I set the tray down at the nearest station and started distributing plates.

That's when I heard her voice.

"I'm sorry," Saylor was saying. Quiet. Apologetic. "I didn't mean to cause trouble."

I glanced up. She was speaking to Grayson, her hand resting lightly on her forearm. I saw the bruise then—dark purple, the size of a thumbprint, just below her elbow.

"It's nothing," she continued, her voice dropping even lower. "I walked into a door frame last night. The hallway was dark and I—" She stopped. Shook her head. "I'm just not used to the layout yet."

Grayson's jaw tightened. "You should have called for the healer."

"I didn't want to bother anyone." She looked down at her plate. Her fingers twisted together again. "Especially with everything that's happened. I know the pack is... tense. I can feel it."

She paused. Let the silence stretch.

"Sometimes I feel watched," she said finally. Her voice was barely audible. "Like someone's waiting for me to make a mistake. It makes me feel... unsafe."

Grayson leaned forward slightly. "Who?"

"I don't know." She shook her head quickly. "I don't want to accuse anyone. I just—" Another pause. "I worry about the rejected mate's state of mind."

She never said my name. She didn't need to.

Every wolf at the head table knew exactly who she meant.

I set down the last plate. Picked up the empty tray. Turned toward the kitchen.

Grayson's eyes tracked me across the room. I felt it like a physical touch. Not grief. Not guilt.

Suspicion.

I pushed through the kitchen door and set the tray down on the counter. My hands were steady. My face was blank.

Carla smirked from the sink. "Trouble in paradise?"

I didn't answer. I loaded the next tray and went back out.

By the time dinner ended, my arms were numb and my feet ached. I cleaned the serving stations, wiped down the tables, and hauled the dirty dishes back to the kitchen.

No one spoke to me.

I scrubbed the last pot, dried my hands, and walked back to the basement.

Six feet by eight feet. No window. Mildew smell.

I sat on the bed and pulled out my notebook. Wrote down everything I'd seen. The bruise. The calculated pauses. The way she'd planted suspicion without ever making a direct accusation.

Then I counted the days.

Two more. Roane would be back in two more days.

I closed the notebook. Pressed my thumb against my wrist.

Inside my chest, where my wolf used to be, that slow waking thing stirred again.

Not a howl. Not a whimper.

Just a low, steady hum. Like something sharpening itself in the dark.

I lay down. Closed my eyes.

And waited.
