After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me Novel Cover

After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me

At 9:41, between toast and meat, the mate bond shattered. Five years of being Alpha Ryan's quiet, gray-dressed mate ended with a fork in my hand. The hall fell silent as Ryan rose with Lorelei, the Luna circlet I'd earned now crowning her dark hair. The Ironridge Pack watched. My place was always near the kitchen doors—until the night everything changed.

Chapter 2

The servants' quarters smelled like old soap and mildew. The cot was narrow, the blanket thin, and Buster took up most of the space with his head on my lap and his tail tucked against the wall. I didn't sleep. I sat there in the dark with my hand on his warm fur and felt the cold scar on my neck where the mark used to be.

The love was dead. Finally. Completely. I could feel the shape of where it had been, like a tooth pulled clean, and there was relief in that. Not peace. Relief. The kind you get when something that's been dying for years finally stops breathing.

I reached through the mind-link. It took effort — the bond with Ryan was gone, but the pack link still held, thin and fraying. I found Mac's thread and pulled.

*Mac. I need you.*

His response came back fast, steady. *I'm here.*

*The elite unit. Every warrior I brought into this pack. I want them ready to move. Immediate withdrawal from Ironridge territory.*

There was a pause. Not hesitation. Calculation.

*Already in motion,* he sent back.

I closed my eyes. My hand tightened in Buster's fur.

*You knew.*

*I knew the second he said the words at that banquet. You built this pack, Victoria. We all know it. The ones worth keeping, anyway.*

I didn't answer. I just sat there with the link open between us, feeling the first real warmth I'd felt in days.

*Thank you,* I finally sent.

*Don't thank me yet. Tomorrow's going to be ugly.*

He was right.

I went back to the main pack house at dawn to get Buster's things from the utility shed. I wasn't going to leave anything behind. Not a bowl, not a blanket, nothing.

The side door was unlocked. I slipped through and made it three steps into the hall before I heard her voice.

"She's here."

Lorelei was standing at the base of the stairs in a pale blue dress, her burned hand wrapped in clean white gauze. She looked soft and wounded and perfectly positioned in the morning light. Behind her, pack members were gathering — kitchen staff, younger wolves, a few of the delta-ranked fighters who spent more time posturing than training.

"I told Ryan she'd come back," Lorelei said, louder now, her voice carrying. "I told him she couldn't help herself."

I kept walking toward the back hallway. Toward the shed.

"She threatened me yesterday," Lorelei called out. "Right here in this hall. She said if I didn't give her that pendant back, she'd make me regret it."

I stopped. Turned.

"I never said that."

"You did." Her eyes were wide, wet. "You grabbed my wrist. You twisted it. I dropped the candle trying to get away from you."

Two wolves stepped into the hallway ahead of me, blocking the door to the back exit. A third moved in behind. The air in the room shifted — not hostile yet, but watching. Waiting to see which way this would tip.

"Move," I said quietly.

They didn't.

Footsteps on the stairs. Ryan came down fast, his shirt half-buttoned, his jaw tight. He looked at Lorelei first. Then at me.

"You don't belong here anymore," he said.

"I'm getting my dog."

"Your dog can stay in the shed until you learn some respect." He crossed the room in four strides and his hand closed around my upper arm, hard enough to bruise. "On your knees, Victoria. Apologize to her. Again."

I felt the Alpha tone building in his chest. I felt it start to press down.

And then Mac was there.

He didn't shout. He didn't shove. He just stepped between us, one hand up, and Ryan's grip loosened by reflex. Mac was bigger than Ryan by half a head and twice as much in the shoulders, and he had the kind of presence that didn't need a title to make wolves step back.

"Let her go," Mac said.

Ryan's face went red. "You're giving me orders in my own house?"

"I'm telling you to let her go." Mac's voice was flat. Factual. "And I'm telling you that the entire elite warrior unit is withdrawing from Ironridge. Effective immediately. We're done."

The hall went silent.

Ryan stared at him. "What?"

"Every fighter she brought into this pack. Every bloodline sourced through her alliance. We're pulling out. You've got until sundown to make other arrangements."

The color drained from Ryan's face. His hand fell away from my arm. He looked at me, then at Mac, then at the wolves gathered in the hall — and for the first time in five years, I saw fear.

"You can't," he said. His voice cracked. "You're Beta. You're bound to this pack."

"I'm bound to the wolf who brought me here," Mac said. "That was never you."

Ryan lunged. Mac caught his wrist mid-swing and held it, effortless, until Ryan's wolf retreated behind his eyes and his shoulders dropped.

I turned and walked down the hall. Nobody stopped me. I opened the shed door, clipped the leash onto Buster's collar, and led him out into the morning air. He wagged his tail and licked my hand and didn't care that the world had just cracked open.

Mac was waiting by the gate. He pressed something small and sharp into my palm as I passed.

The fragments. Every piece of my mother's pendant, wrapped in a scrap of cloth.

"Thought you'd want them," he said.

I closed my fingers around them. My throat was too tight to answer.

Buster pulled on the leash, eager to move. I let him lead. We walked through the gate, past the territory line, and I did not look back at the house, or the Alpha, or the woman wearing my circlet.

Behind me, I heard Ryan's voice, raw and rising.

But I was already gone.
