Chapter 4

The medical analyst was a small woman with reading glasses and a flat, clinical voice. She spread the chain-of-custody records across the table like she was laying out a patient's chart, and she walked us through it without ceremony.

Six years of purchases. Three layers of black-market intermediaries. Each delivery routed through a human pharmaceutical front and broken into small enough quantities that no single order would flag a supplier's records. But Silas's team had pulled the full picture, and the full picture was damning.

"Chronic suppression," the analyst said. She tapped a column of dates with her pen. "Consistent dosing, precisely calibrated. Not enough to make the subject sick. Just enough to hold the wolf down." She looked up at me over her glasses. "Whoever was dosed this way was never wolfless. The wolf was there. It was being held down."

I heard the words. I understood them. I sat very still and let them move through me the way cold water moves through a wound—cleaning something out, burning as it went.

Never wolfless.

Not broken. Not deficient. Not one of the rare, unfortunate wolves who simply never awakened. Just poisoned. For years. By someone who knew exactly what she was suppressing and did it anyway, with the patience of a woman who understood that the most effective cage is the one the prisoner builds for herself.

I thought about every morning I'd woken up in Ironveil and felt the absence like a missing limb. Every training session where I'd pushed harder, faster, longer, trying to compensate for the thing I didn't have. Every time Barrett had looked at me with something like pity and I'd told myself I didn't need a wolf to be useful. Every time I'd believed him.

I stood up. I walked to the window. Outside, the tree line was dark and still, the pines standing in their rows like they were waiting for something.

My wrist was burning. It always burned now. The rogue mark had its own pulse, separate from mine, a steady reminder of everything that had been taken.

But underneath it—deep underneath, in the place I'd spent twenty-three years convincing myself was empty—something moved. Barely. Like a breath in a sealed room. Like something that had been sleeping for a very long time and had just heard its name.

Then it went still.

I stood at the window until I was sure my face was neutral. Then I turned around.

"How long before Silas has the footage ready?" I asked.

---

The answer was: that evening.

Silas's team had spent three days reconstructing the Blackridge security files frame by frame—corrupted data pulled back from the edge of deletion, stitched together with the kind of painstaking patience that I was starting to understand was simply how Silas worked. He set up the laptop on the cleared dining table, angled the screen so Nixon and I could both see, and pressed play without preamble.

Alessandra arrived at the neutral-ground building six hours before the summit. I watched her walk the assembly hall with a clipboard, moving between the torchlight and the shadows, pausing at each exit to speak to the Silvercrest warriors she'd positioned there. Her posture was relaxed. She'd done this before, or something like it. The way she moved through the space—measuring sightlines, testing angles—it was the movement of someone who had planned this room.

Then the four witnesses. She met with them one by one in a side corridor, just outside the range of the main hall cameras, but the angle caught enough. I watched her speak. I watched them nod. I watched one of them rehearse a line, and Alessandra shake her head, and the man try again. Better that time. She moved on.

Silas fast-forwarded. The hall filled. The summit wolves arrived.

Then the final clip.

I knew what I was going to see before I saw it. I knew because I'd felt him through the mind-link, felt his presence like a second heartbeat on the other side of the wall. But knowing and seeing are different things.

Barrett stood in the doorway of the adjoining chamber. The door was cracked, maybe four inches. His face was fully visible in the gap—the angle of the hall camera caught it clean, no ambiguity, no shadow to hide behind. He was watching.

I watched him watch Alessandra position her warriors at the exits.

I watched him watch the witnesses rehearse.

His expression didn't change. He didn't move toward the door. He didn't reach for the handle. He just stood there with the look of a man who had already made his decision and was simply waiting for the performance to begin.

Then the door swung shut from the inside.

I played it again.

The second time was worse. The second time I noticed his hand. It was flat against the wall beside the door frame, fingers spread, like he needed something to hold onto. Like some part of him—some small, vestigial part—was still fighting with itself.

Not hard enough to matter. But there.

I stopped the footage.

The room was quiet. The laptop fan hummed. Outside, a branch moved against the window.

Nixon hadn't said a word. I could feel him beside me, very still, the cedar-and-amber scent of him steady in the air. He wasn't watching the screen anymore. He was watching me.

I closed the laptop.

"We have everything we need," I said.
