Chapter 3

I started with the border logs.

My quarters at Silvercrest had a desk by the window and a lockbox Silas provided without being asked. I spread my intelligence journal open beside the fresh reports Declan had cleared me for and began the work my grandfather taught me: map the anomalies, track the patterns, let the data speak before I did.

Brinley arrived at Ironridge seven months ago. I marked the date. Then I pulled every security failure I'd documented since—botched patrols, misrouted supply lines, training rotations that left border sectors exposed on schedules I never authorized. Individually, they looked like incompetence. Collectively, they looked like sabotage.

Three perimeter breaches in the northeast corridor, all during shifts Brinley volunteered for. Two supply convoys redirected through unvetted routes after she joined the logistics rotation. A training schedule that pulled senior warriors off the western ridge every third week—the same interval the Ashveil scouts had been testing that boundary.

I wrote it down in the clinical shorthand my grandfather drilled into me. No assumptions. No accusations. Just coordinates, timestamps, and overlapping failures that formed a picture only someone looking for it would see.

My wolf stirred as I worked, restless and newly awake. She didn't like waiting. Neither did I. But I'd learned the cost of evidence presented too early. At Ironridge, I'd flagged the wolfsbane contamination to the Healer six months before I started running the protocol myself. She'd dismissed it as groundwater variation. By the time I had proof solid enough to force her attention, I'd already been filtering it alone for a year.

I wasn't making that mistake again.

I locked the journal in the box when I finished. The dead scar on my neck pulsed once, cold and hollow. I pressed two fingers to it without thinking, then caught myself and dropped my hand. The habit was getting worse.

I needed air.

The border checkpoint was quiet when I arrived. Silas was running the night rotation, standing at the gate with two perimeter guards, all of them armed and alert in the way Silvercrest wolves defaulted to. Professional. Competent. The kind of baseline security Ironridge had never maintained without me forcing it.

Silas saw me approach and nodded once. "Analyst."

"Gamma." I stopped a few feet back, far enough to stay out of his operational space. "Quiet night?"

"So far." He studied me briefly, the way he'd studied me when I first arrived—assessing, not judging. "You don't sleep much."

"Neither do you."

His mouth twitched. Almost a smile. Then his attention shifted past me, sharpening. I turned.

A wolf approached from the south. Ironridge scent, familiar and bitter. The Beta. Alone.

Silas stepped forward, positioning himself at the gate with the same economical authority Declan carried. The two perimeter guards flanked him without needing orders. I stayed where I was, far enough back that I wasn't visible from the road but close enough to hear.

The Beta stopped ten feet from the gate. He looked tired. Older than I remembered. "I'm here to speak with the rejected Luna."

Silas didn't move. "You're at the wrong border."

"Alpha Chance sent me. She belongs to Ironridge. We're claiming pack authority."

Something cold settled in my chest. Pack authority. As though I were property. As though the bond he severed in front of the entire pack still gave him jurisdiction over where I stood.

Silas's voice dropped, quiet and absolute. "She is not your Luna anymore."

The Beta's jaw tightened. He opened his mouth. Closed it. Tried again. "Chance demands—"

"Chance has no authority here." Silas stepped closer to the gate, and the shift in his posture made the two guards straighten. Not aggressive. Just present. "Turn around. Go home. Don't come back."

The Beta stared at him for a long moment. Then he turned and walked south without another word.

I didn't realize I'd been holding my breath until he disappeared past the ridge. My wolf settled, satisfied in a way I didn't entirely understand. Silas returned to his position at the gate and glanced back at me.

"He'll report that to Chance," I said quietly.

"Good." Silas's expression didn't change. "Let him."

I left before the Beta was fully out of sight. Returned to my quarters. Tried to sleep. Failed.

Declan found me in the war room two hours before dawn.

I looked up from the Ashveil perimeter analysis I'd been running and found him standing in the doorway, fully dressed, expression calm and unreadable. He didn't ask why I was awake. He walked to the table, set a small leather case beside my maps, and opened it.

Archival documents. Intelligence files. Decades of Ashveil operational data, organized with the kind of institutional precision only a Lycan Court could maintain.

"Full access," he said. "Cleared this morning."

I stared at the files. Then at him. "Why?"

"Because your work earned it." He met my eyes, steady and matter-of-fact. "You've identified patterns in six months that took our analysts two years to map. You're not a consultant. You're an intelligence asset. I'm treating you like one."

Something shifted in my chest. Not gratitude exactly. Something sharper. At Ironridge, I'd built everything Chance took credit for and received neither acknowledgment nor access. Declan had just handed me the keys to the Lycan Court's strategic archive because I'd proven I could use them.

I pulled the first file toward me. "I'll have a briefing ready by morning."

"I know." He turned to leave, then paused at the door. "Silas told me about the Beta."

I looked up.

"Chance will try again," Declan said quietly. "He'll escalate. And when he does, you won't be alone."

He left before I could respond.

I worked through the night. Cross-referenced the Silvercrest archive against my own documentation. Found three additional Ashveil operative placements I hadn't had evidence for before—two in neutral territories, one in a pack Chance had been negotiating an alliance with last spring.

Brinley wasn't an isolated insertion. She was part of a network.

By dawn, I had a map that connected six territories, fourteen operatives, and a long-term annexation strategy that made Ironridge look like the opening move in a much larger game.

I locked it in the case Declan had given me and finally let myself sleep.

My wolf settled for the first time in days. Not because the work was finished. Because for the first time in my life, someone had responded to my competence by expanding my authority instead of absorbing my labor.

I didn't name what that meant yet.

But I was beginning to understand that Silvercrest operated under different rules than the ones I'd learned at Ironridge.

And the Moon Goddess was still watching.
