Chapter 3

The frozen mud burned against my cheek, but the cold on the ground was nothing compared to the frost inside my throat.

The severed bond mark on the left side of my neck felt like a brand made of dry ice. Every beat of my heart sent a jagged shockwave through my nervous system, pulling the air straight out of my lungs. I couldn't move. I couldn't push myself up.

For seven years, I had believed that if Edwin ever pushed me away, I would simply cease to exist. I was an orphan. I had arrived at Ironvale’s gates with no name, no people, and an inner wolf so quiet she barely cast a shadow in my mind. For seven years, I had scrubbed their floors, drawn their defensive maps, and bled for their borders, all to earn five acres of dirt and a roof I could finally call home.

And now, I was back to nothing. Packless. Homeless. Stray.

The biological pain of the rejection spiked, climbing to a pitch that felt fatal. It felt like my ribs were being crushed under iron treads, squeezing the last warmth from my marrow. My fingers clawed into the frozen leaves, tearing my nails down to the quick.

*Let it end,* I thought. *Just let it take me.*

Then, deep in the darkest, hollowed-out corner of my chest, something didn't break.

It cracked open.

A sound ripped through my ears—not from the woods, but from inside my own skull. It sounded like an ancient stone door splitting in two.

A wave of molten heat exploded behind my sternum, swallowing the wolfsbane fire, swallowing the cold of Edwin's dead mark. My bones didn't just ache—they snapped, lengthened, and reformed with terrifying, violent speed.

I gasped, but the sound tore out of my mouth as a guttural, earth-shaking roar.

I surged upward. Fur—thick, pure silver, gleaming like moonlight on fresh snow—rippled over my skin. My muscles swelled, expanding into a frame far larger than any female wolf I had ever seen. Two meters tall at the shoulder, I rose on massive paws that sank deep into the earth.

An aura surged out of my chest in an invisible, concussive ring.

The barren branches above me shuddered. Thirty yards away, near the Ironvale border stones, three gray rogue wolves had been tracking the scent of my blood, waiting for me to die.

The moment my aura hit them, their growls turned into shrill, pathetic yelps. They didn't even look back. They scrambled over each other, tails tucked flat, fleeing in blind terror into the black trees.

I stood there, breathing in the night air. For the first time in twenty-three years, I didn't feel small. I didn't feel like an outsider begging for scraps at another wolf's table.

*I am Sera,* a voice resonated through my consciousness. It was vast, ancient, and perfectly steady.

*Where were you?* I breathed, stunned by the sheer weight of her presence.

*You were never without me,* Sera replied, her silver warmth wrapping around every shattered piece of my heart. *I was waiting for you to survive something that would finally let me through.*

Tears pricked my wolf eyes, hot and clear. I wasn't an empty vessel. I had never been weak. The power had simply slept, buried under seven years of false humility and unearned devotion.

I closed my eyes and drew a long breath. With a smooth, practiced focus, the silver fur melted away, and my bones shifted back. I landed on two feet, breathless and trembling, but entirely intact. The scalding wolfsbane burn on my shoulder had already scabbed over, its poison burned away by the raw heat of an Alpha-blood awakening.

I didn't head back toward Ironvale. I turned east, toward the river crossing where the neutral courier post sat.

The station master, an older Delta named Miller who handled inter-pack trade, blinked in shock when I stepped through the lantern light. He had worked with me on four different border treaties. He knew my work. He knew I had never stolen a dime or broken an oath.

"Salma?" he whispered, his eyes widening as he caught the faint, electric residue of silver aura clinging to my skin. "What happened to you?"

"I need a priority dispatch," I said. My voice was calm, but it held a quiet resonance that made him straighten his spine on instinct. "To the Silvercrest Court. Directly to Lycan Prince Alistair."

Miller swallowed hard. "A formal petition?"

"No," I said.

I took a sheet of thick vellum from his desk and uncapped a pen. I didn't ask for pity. I didn't mention Edwin's cruelty, Lola's lies, or the pack that had cast me out. I wrote as an equal.

*I am a newly awakened Alpha-blood wolf,* I wrote, my handwriting sharp and deliberate. *I hold the full layout of Ironvale’s northern patrol gaps, their encrypted border codes, and the structural flaws in their eastern supply routes. I propose a strategic alliance on my own terms.*

I signed it at the bottom.

*Salma Lane.*

No title. No pack. Just my name.

I folded the parchment, pressed hot wax over the seam, and handed it to Miller along with the last silver coin from my pocket. "Ride hard," I told him. "Put it in his hands."

Miller nodded once, intimidated by the calm authority in my gaze, and sprinted out to his bike.

I sat in the corner of the small depot, wrapping a rough wool blanket around my shoulders, and waited.

Forty minutes later, the roar of an engine cut through the woods. Miller returned, his face pale, his breath misting in the cold room. He held out a small envelope of heavy black paper, sealed with the silver wolf-head of the Lycan royalty.

"The Prince was in his study," Miller murmured, his voice hushed with disbelief. "He took the letter himself. He read it once. Then he read it again. He didn't move for two whole minutes. I've never seen a Lycan go that still, Salma."

"What did he say?" I asked, taking the envelope.

"He didn't speak to me," Miller whispered. "He just wrote that, handed it back, and turned to his Beta. He ordered him to prepare guest quarters fit for a visiting Alpha."

My fingers opened the wax seal. Inside was a single card.

One word was written across the center in bold, fluid strokes:

*Come.*

I looked down at the dark ink, and beneath my ribs, Sera let out a low, satisfied hum.

I stepped out into the night and began walking toward the Silvercrest border.
