Chapter 1

The eight-million-dollar Shadowpine alliance died at exactly 7:14 on a Thursday evening, the moment Lola Cruz laughed in their Alpha’s face.

I stood three paces back, my hands folded, watching four months of my blood and diplomacy turn to ash. I had drafted every line of that territorial trade agreement. I had memorized Shadowpine’s supply lines and eased their border grievances. But two days ago, Edwin had locked me out of the briefing room and handed the final signing ceremony to Lola.

Lola had misquoted the grain tariffs to Shadowpine’s Beta. Then she called their traditional border patrols "paranoid and outdated."

Alpha Theresa of Shadowpine didn't shout. She simply stood, smoothed her jacket, and looked at Edwin with disgust. "Ironvale has forgotten how to negotiate with adults. The deal is off."

The heavy oak doors slammed behind them. The Grand Hall plunged into suffocating silence.

Edwin didn't look at Lola, who was already trembling with manufactured tears. His dark eyes locked onto me, blazing with humiliated fury.

"You were supposed to oversee her, Salma," Edwin barked. The weight of his Alpha tone crashed through the room, heavy and suffocating, aimed straight at my chest. "You deliberately let her fail to make yourself look indispensable. You sabotaged this pack."

The half-formed bond mark on my neck flared with sickening heat. For seven years, that mark had waited for him to finish it, and now his aura used it like a handle to wrench my spine.

I didn't drop my chin. I forced my lungs to expand against the pressure. "I was barred from the prep meetings, Edwin. By your direct order."

"Don't you dare lie to him!" Lola shrieked. She stepped between us, her lower lip quivering for the fifty warriors and elders watching from the gallery. "You wanted me to ruin this! You've been jealous of me since the day I arrived!"

Her hand cracked across my cheek before I could shift my weight.

The blow snapped my head to the side. The room gasped, but nobody moved. My skin stung, yet the real strike landed in my chest as I looked back at Edwin.

He didn't growl. He didn't bare his teeth. He stood completely still, his silence offering Lola his total protection.

Emboldened, Lola grabbed the ceremonial silver goblet from the side table. It was filled with steaming wolfsbane tonic, brewed for the formal alliance toast. With a vicious sneer, she dumped the scalding liquid straight over my left shoulder.

The fabric melted instantly. The wolfsbane sank like liquid fire into my flesh, burning through skin and deadening the cells beneath. It was designed to suppress a wolf's natural regeneration; the wound would scar permanently. My teeth clicked together so hard I tasted copper, but I refused to give her a scream. The pain was a blinding, chemical agony that made the bond mark on my neck turn ice-cold, like a door slamming shut in an empty house.

Behind the second row of warriors, junior Delta Briana Cole lowered her gaze, slipped her hand into her tactical pouch, and quietly pressed the record button on a small black device.

I looked Edwin dead in the eye. I didn't beg. I didn't touch my burned shoulder.

"We are done," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet clear enough to reach the rafters.

I turned on my heel and walked out of the hall.

Two hours later, I stood in the Alpha quarters I had run for seven years without a title. The scent of lavender and pine—my scent—was already fading under the heavy stench of the wolfsbane salve I had smeared across my blistered skin.

I reached out through the mental link, finding the familiar channel between my mind and Edwin's.

*I am leaving Ironvale tonight,* I projected, cold and deliberate. *Do not look for me.*

His reply hit my skull like a hammer, dripping with arrogant disdain: *Stop being dramatic, Salma. You aren't going anywhere. You will clean yourself up and fix the Shadowpine contract by morning, or I'll lock you in the cells until you learn respect.*

I didn't argue. With a single, sharp push of will, I severed the mind-link completely, snapping the psychic thread between us.

I grabbed my duffel bag from the closet. I packed light: three changes of clothes, the iron compass that was the only remnant of my dead parents, and my leather-bound logs of Ironvale’s patrol shifts and boundary codes. I had built their entire defense network from memory. Without me, their borders were blind.

As I zipped the bag, a gust of air from the open window stirred the master bed.

A sharp, synthetic sweetness hit my nose. It wasn't the trace of a single afternoon. Lola’s floral musk was layered into the sheets, ground into the mattress across weeks of routine betrayal.

Deep in my chest, something shifted. The inner wolf that had stayed quiet and muted my entire life—the small presence I had carried like a shy shadow—suddenly woke up. A low, tectonic growl vibrated through my ribs, ancient and heavy with silver fire. She wasn't weeping. She was baring her fangs.

I slung the duffel over my good shoulder and stepped out into the dark hallway.

At the base of the grand staircase, Edwin’s voice cut through the quiet, speaking to Beta Darian Frost.

"Assemble the guard at the border gate," Edwin commanded, pulling a set of heavy iron cuffs from his belt. "She has her father's homestead deed in her quarters. If she takes a single step off this compound, arrest her for treason."
