Chapter 2

I tell myself I am only sorting my mother's things because the Alpha's quarters need reorganizing. This is a lie, but it is a useful one, so I let it stand.

Reagan stored the boxes in the back of the closet years ago. I remember the day — two weeks after the funeral, when she told me it was healthier to put away reminders. I was thirteen. I nodded because I did not know yet that grief was something you were supposed to feel rather than file.

The first box holds photographs. My mother in her Luna gown. My mother laughing at some pack gathering, her hand on my father's arm. I set them aside and reach for the second box.

Beneath folded shawls and a pair of worn boots, my fingers close around something small and rectangular. Plastic. A voice-recorder, the kind my mother used to use for pack meeting notes before everything went digital.

I press play expecting her voice.

Instead: "The dosage needs to stay consistent." Reagan's voice. Calm. Operational. "If we reduce it too quickly, the wolf will surface before we're ready."

"Understood." A man's voice. Healer Ayden Russell. I know the cadence, the slight hesitation before difficult words. "How much longer?"

"Until the engagement is formalized and the succession is locked." Reagan again. "After that, we can taper. Slowly. Make it look like natural atrophy."

I sit very still.

"And if it doesn't atrophy?" Ayden's voice drops. "If the bloodline is strong enough to—"

"It won't be." A third voice cuts in. Bowen. My fiancé. My almost-mate. "Not after fifteen years. You said yourself, prolonged suppression damages the neural pathways. Even if she stops taking it, the wolf is already too weak to surface fully."

"That's the theory," Ayden says carefully. "But her mother's line—"

"Her mother is dead." Bowen's tone is flat. "And Gemma is manageable. As long as she keeps drinking the tonic, we have time to consolidate. Once the mating ceremony is done, it won't matter what her wolf could have been."

Silence on the recording. Then Reagan: "She doesn't suspect?"

"She thinks she's broken," Bowen says. "She's been explaining it to herself since she was sixteen. Defective wolf, no scent, no bond. She's built an entire identity around it. She won't question the tonic. It's the one thing that makes her feel like she's doing something right."

I stop the recording.

My hands are steady. My chest is dry. I have never been able to cry — another symptom I explained away as personality rather than poison.

I press play again.

The conversation continues. Dosage schedules. Wolfsbane concentrations calibrated to suppress without killing. Ayden's voice outlining how much is needed to sever the mate-bond before it forms, how long until permanent damage sets in. Bowen confirming he will keep me compliant through the engagement. Reagan summarizing the plan: marry me to Bowen, wait until the succession is locked, then taper the wolfsbane slowly enough that my wolf's failure looks natural. No one will question a Luna who never shifted. Packs have Omegas. They have late bloomers. They have wolves that simply do not surface.

They do not have heiresses who were chemically lobotomized for fifteen years by their own stepmother.

The recording ends.

I sit on the floor of my mother's room for a long time. The voice-recorder is small in my hands. Plastic. Light. The kind of object you could crush if you wanted to.

I do not crush it.

I stand. I walk to the bathroom. I open the cabinet and take out the small glass bottle I have drunk from every night since I was thirteen years old. The tonic that Healer Ayden compounds personally. The tonic Reagan brings me herself, every month, with a reminder to take it before bed.

I unscrew the cap and pour the contents into the sink.

The liquid is pale green and faintly bitter-smelling. I watch it spiral down the drain. Then I rinse the bottle, set it on the counter, and go back to my bedroom.

I sit on the edge of the bed and wait.

Withdrawal hits within two hours.

Nausea first. Then fever. My skin feels too tight, like something inside me is trying to push through and cannot find the exit. I lock the door. I tell no one. I have spent fifteen years trusting the wrong people; I will not make that mistake again.

The first night, I vomit until there is nothing left. The second night, my bones start cracking — not shifting, not completing any transformation, just breaking and reforming in ways that make no biological sense. I grip the bed frame. The wood splinters under my fingers. I catalogue the symptoms with the detached precision of a woman who has only her own observations to trust: elevated temperature, muscle convulsions, auditory hypersensitivity. My wolf is trying to surface. My body does not remember how to let her.

On the third night, drenched in sweat and shaking so hard my teeth rattle, I hear a voice inside my mind for the first time in my life.

It is deep. Silver-toned. Ancient.

*Gemma.*

I freeze.

*You are not broken,* the voice says. *You were buried.*

My vision blurs. The room tilts. I feel something massive moving beneath my ribs, something that has been clawing at the inside of my chest for fifteen years and finally, finally has enough space to breathe.

A name surfaces in my consciousness. Not a name I chose. A name I was born carrying.

A bloodline name.

A name no Ashford wolf should be able to bear.

My wolf surfaces like a creature breaking through ice: massive, silver-furred, furious. She fills my mind, my chest, every space that has been empty for as long as I can remember. Her eyes are molten gold. Her presence is so vast I cannot breathe around it.

I gasp and say aloud, to the empty room: "You're real."

*I have always been real,* she says. *You were the one they tried to erase.*

I sit on the splintered bed frame, shaking, and for the first time in fifteen years, I feel something crack open inside my chest that is not withdrawal.

It is rage.
