Chapter 3

The plane touched down at dawn. I had been gone three months, but Silverfang territory smelled exactly the same — pine, wet earth, and the faint metallic tang of the river that cut through our eastern border.

I did not call ahead. I walked through the pack house doors while most of the household was still asleep, set my bag in the foyer, and went straight to my father's office.

He was awake. He was always awake now.

"Elodie," he said, and his voice cracked on my name.

I stopped in the doorway. The man behind the desk looked ten years older than the one I had left. His hair had gone gray at the temples. The lines around his mouth were deeper. He stood slowly, like his joints hurt, and I realized with a cold shock that the political fallout from my rejection had not just damaged Silverfang's reputation. It had damaged him.

"Dad," I said quietly.

He crossed the room and pulled me into his arms. For a moment I let myself be small again — his daughter, his little girl, the one he used to carry on his shoulders during pack runs. Then I stepped back.

"I am ready," I said.

He studied my face. Whatever he saw there made him nod.

"Then we do this today," he said.

---

The pack assembly was called for noon. Every wolf in Silverfang territory who could walk showed up. They filled the ceremonial clearing — Deltas, Gammas, healers, the kitchen staff, the border patrol teams, even the Omegas who usually stayed out of formal gatherings. Three hundred faces turned toward the platform as my father and I walked up the steps.

I had not been on this platform since the night Dominic rejected me.

My father raised his hand and the crowd went silent.

"Three months ago," he said, his voice carrying across the clearing, "this pack suffered a blow to its reputation and its heart. My daughter, your future Luna, was publicly rejected by a wolf we welcomed as family. The alliance we built was shattered. Our standing among the allied packs has been questioned."

I felt every eye on me. I kept my chin level.

"But Silverfang does not break," my father continued. "We adapt. We survive. And today, we move forward."

He turned to me. His hand came up to rest on my shoulder.

"Elodie Willis has returned," he said. "And effective immediately, I am naming her acting Alpha of the Silverfang Pack."

The crowd stirred. A few wolves exchanged glances. I heard a Delta near the back whisper something to his partner.

My father stepped aside.

I took his place at the center of the platform and opened the pack link wide.

The Alpha aura hit them like a physical wave.

I felt it roll out from my chest — silver and cold and absolute. It was not my father's aura, warm and steady like a hearth fire. It was mine. Sharp. Unyielding. The kind of presence that made you bare your throat before you realized you were doing it.

Every Delta in the clearing dropped their eyes. The Gammas stiffened. Even the oldest warriors, wolves who had served my grandfather, straightened and tilted their heads just slightly to the side.

Inside the link, I spoke.

*I am Elodie Willis. I am your Alpha. And I will not apologize for what happened on this platform three months ago. I will not explain it. I will not justify it. What I will do is rebuild what was broken — not because I owe anyone forgiveness, but because this pack deserves better than the scraps Ironridge tried to leave us with.*

The link hummed with shock. With relief. With something that felt almost like hope.

*We start now,* I said.

I closed the link and looked across the crowd until I found Arlo. He was standing near the edge, arms crossed, jaw tight. When our eyes met, I nodded once.

"Arlo Willis," I said aloud. "Step forward."

He hesitated. Then he walked through the crowd and climbed the platform steps. He stopped in front of me, and I saw the guilt written all over his face — the territorial bet, the manipulation, the fact that he had almost cost us everything.

"You are my Beta," I said clearly. "Do you accept?"

His throat worked. "I do."

"Then prove it," I said quietly, so only he could hear. "Help me fix this."

He nodded. His eyes were bright.

The assembly dispersed slowly. Wolves approached to offer formal acknowledgment — a nod, a bared throat, a murmured "Alpha." I accepted each one with the same calm composure I had practiced in Colorado until it became reflex.

By the time the clearing emptied, the sun was past its peak.

Arlo found me in my father's office — my office now — an hour later. He dropped a folder on the desk.

"Three packs have formally requested to reassess alliance terms," he said. "Redwood, Crestfall, and Brookstone. All within two weeks of each other."

I opened the folder. The letters were polite. Professional. And completely transparent.

"Dominic," I said.

Arlo nodded. "He has been feeding them intelligence. Calling us unstable. Saying an unmated female Alpha is a liability."

"Of course he has," I murmured.

I flipped through the rest of the folder. Trade route disruptions. Delayed shipments. Two border patrols that had been turned away from neutral territory without explanation.

Dominic was not just smearing my reputation. He was choking Silverfang's resources.

"There is more," Arlo said carefully.

I looked up.

"He has been seen publicly with Laney Collins," Arlo continued. "At the Crescent Moon Gala last week. At the Ironridge trade summit three days ago. She is playing the sympathetic rogue angle hard, and people are buying it."

I closed the folder.

"Let me guess," I said. "She gave an interview."

Arlo's expression darkened. "To Elena Cross. The inter-pack chronicler. Laney did not name you directly, but she talked about how painful it is to watch any she-wolf suffer through a broken bond. How some wolves lash out when they are hurting. How she hopes everyone involved finds peace."

I laughed. It was a short, sharp sound.

"She is good," I said.

Arlo frowned. "Elodie—"

"No, I mean it," I said. "She is very good. Sympathetic without being obvious. Vague enough to seem generous. Specific enough that everyone knows exactly who she is talking about."

I stood and walked to the window. Outside, the pack house grounds were quiet. Peaceful. It would not stay that way.

"They want me to look bitter," I said. "Obsessive. A rejected she-wolf who cannot let go."

Arlo came to stand beside me. "Then we prove them wrong."

I turned to look at him. "No," I said. "We prove them right. And then we destroy them with it."

He blinked. "What?"

I smiled. It was not a kind smile.

"Let them think I am bitter," I said. "Let them think I severed alliances out of spite. Let Laney play the victim and Dominic play the hero. Because while they are busy performing for an audience, we are going to find every single crack in their story and pry it open until the whole thing collapses."

Arlo stared at me for a long moment. Then he grinned.

"I like this version of you," he said.

"Good," I replied. "Because she is the only one left."
