Chapter 2

The Silvercrest Council chamber smelled like old wood and cold stone and the particular kind of authority that accumulates over generations. I'd sat in this room as a child, watching my father hold court with the quiet certainty of a man who had never once doubted his right to the chair at the head of the table. I knew every carved panel on the walls. I knew which elder sat where, and why, and what each seating arrangement communicated about the political weather inside the court.

I had not been in this room for five years.

I sat straight. My hands were folded in my lap. I did not press my fingertips together.

Elden Theron Ashcroft was speaking. He was the oldest member of the Council—white-haired, sharp-eyed, and possessed of the particular certainty that comes from having been right often enough to stop questioning whether he might be wrong. He sat to my father's left, which was not an accident. He had always positioned himself as close to the crown as possible without wearing it.

"The concern," Theron said, his tone measured and almost gentle in the way that contempt sometimes disguises itself, "is not one of bloodline. No one questions the Princess's lineage." He paused, letting that land. "The question is whether five years of—" he searched for the word with theatrical care "—accommodation, among wolves of considerably lesser standing, has affected the sharpness we would require of someone operating at this level of court."

The room was very quiet.

I felt my father's aura shift beside me—the subtle, barely-contained compression of a Lycan King holding himself still with great effort. He did not speak. He was waiting for me.

Theron folded his hands on the table and looked at me with something that was not quite pity but was close enough to be insulting. "We welcome you home, of course. But the court must be certain."

I let the silence sit for one more beat. Two.

Then I spoke.

"Blackridge Pack's eastern border shares a twelve-mile stretch with the Duskhollow territory," I said. My voice was level. "Duskhollow's Alpha has been quietly negotiating a resource-sharing agreement with the Greymere Pack for the past eight months. Roman doesn't know. He lost his eastern scout rotation six weeks ago when three of his senior warriors requested transfer to neutral territory—transfers he approved because he couldn't afford to refuse them without triggering a morale collapse."

I watched Theron's expression shift. Just slightly. Just enough.

"His northern alliance with the Coldfen Pack is contractually contingent on a quarterly tribute payment that was last made in October. It's now January. Coldfen's Alpha is a patient man, but he is not a charitable one." I paused. "Blackridge's western perimeter has had no active patrol since the second week of December. I mapped the gap myself. It runs four miles along the ridge line above Miller Creek. Any pack with territorial ambitions and basic intelligence could walk through it."

The chamber was completely still.

"I spent five years as Roman Evans's Luna," I said. "I spent every one of those years watching, mapping, calculating, and building contingencies. Not because he asked me to. Because I was trained in this room, by this court, to think that way—and that training does not turn off because a woman decides to love someone."

I looked at Theron directly. "The question, Elder Ashcroft, is not whether five years dulled my edge. The question is what you plan to do with the intelligence I just handed you."

No one spoke for a long moment.

Theron's expression had settled into something I recognized. Not agreement. Not warmth. But the particular recalibration of a man who has encountered a variable he had not adequately weighted. He would not become an ally today. But he would be more careful.

My father said nothing. He didn't need to. I could feel the quiet satisfaction radiating off him like heat.

---

The mornings at Silvercrest were cold and blue-grey and smelled like pine and woodsmoke. I started noticing, in the second week, that Miles was waking up before me.

I would come downstairs and find his room empty, the stuffed wolf sitting alone on the pillow. The first time it happened I felt a cold spike of fear—old instinct, the kind that had been trained into me by months of watching my son flinch at shadows. But then I followed the corridor to the back garden and found him there.

My father sat in the wooden chair he'd kept in that garden for thirty years. Miles was beside him on the stone bench, both hands wrapped around a small cup of warm tea, head tilted up toward the oak tree at the garden's edge.

"That one," my father said quietly, "is a white-throated sparrow. You can tell by the two notes at the end. Listen."

Miles listened. The bird called again. My son's mouth curved—small, careful, but real.

"Again," Miles said.

My father smiled and said nothing, and they both waited for the bird to oblige.

I stood in the doorway and did not go in. I just watched my son sitting in the grey morning light, learning the names of things, and felt something in my chest that had been wound very tight begin, slowly, to loosen.
