Chapter 1

The scent arrived on a Tuesday.

I was folding clean linens in the pack house when Roland came through the door from what he'd called another border patrol. His boots left dirt on the floor I'd mopped that morning. He shrugged off his jacket and tossed it over the chair without looking at me.

That's when I smelled it.

Floral. Light. Sweet in a way that made my wolf's ears flatten. It wasn't pack scent. It wasn't neutral territory moss or pine. It was perfume, or soap, or the natural scent of a she-wolf who'd been close enough to leave a trace on my mate's collar.

I kept folding. My hands didn't shake. I'd had five years of practice.

"Long patrol?" I asked.

Roland pulled a bottle of water from the fridge and drank half of it in one go. "Yeah. Checked the eastern boundary twice. Thought I caught rogue scent, but it was nothing."

His voice was flat. Bored, even. Like he was reading from a script he'd memorized.

I set the folded sheet on the stack and picked up another. "You should tell Corvin. He'll want to know."

"Already did."

He finished the water, crushed the bottle, and tossed it toward the recycling bin. It bounced off the rim and hit the floor. He didn't pick it up. He walked past me toward the stairs, and the floral scent followed him like a shadow.

I waited until his footsteps faded. Then I bent down, picked up the bottle, and dropped it where it belonged.

My wolf stirred. Not with anger. With something colder. Sharper.

I said nothing.

But I started watching.

The border patrols became more frequent. Three times a week. Then four. Roland's explanations stayed the same — rogue concerns, boundary checks, warrior training in the field — but the floral scent came home with him every time. Faint. Clinging to his shirt cuffs, his collar, the edge of his jaw.

I didn't ask questions. Questions would have required him to lie to my face, and I wasn't ready to give him that satisfaction yet.

Instead, I went to my father.

Aldric Nighthollow didn't ask why I needed wolfsbane tincture. He simply sent word to the healers, and two days later a small glass vial arrived by courier. The note inside was written in my father's precise, unforgiving script: *Use it carefully. Suppressing your scent for too long will weaken your wolf.*

I didn't plan to use it long.

Just long enough.

***

The café sat on neutral ground between Silvercrest and Briarwood territories. It was small, plain, the kind of place where working-class wolves stopped for coffee on their way to somewhere else. No one important came here. No one would recognize a Nighthollow Luna with her scent suppressed and her hair pulled back in a simple braid.

I took a corner table near the window. Buster, my gray wolf-dog, lay at my feet and watched the door with his usual calm. I ordered tea and waited.

She came in on the third day.

Pregnant. Visibly so. Maybe five months along, with that glow some she-wolves get when they're carrying healthy. She had warm brown hair and an open, easy smile. She ordered something sweet — a caramel latte, extra whipped cream — and sat two tables over.

I didn't approach her right away. I just watched.

She came back the next week. And the week after that. Always alone. Always with that same contented, dreamy look, like she was carrying a secret too good to share.

On her fourth visit, I smiled at her as she walked past my table.

"That looks good," I said, nodding at her latte.

She lit up. "It's amazing. I probably shouldn't have this much sugar, but I can't help it."

"You're allowed to indulge," I said gently. "Especially now."

She touched her belly with one hand, her smile widening. "I know, right? Everyone keeps telling me to be careful, but I feel great."

I gestured to the empty chair across from me. "Do you want to sit? I hate drinking alone."

She hesitated for only a second. Then she sat.

Her name was Clementine.

***

Over the next few weeks, Clementine became my café companion. She talked easily, the way people do when they think they have nothing to hide. She told me about her modest life in Briarwood Pack, about her little house near the woods, about the bakery she hoped to open someday.

And she told me about him.

She never said his name. Just called him "my Alpha." She described him with the kind of soft, aching affection I hadn't heard in my own voice in years.

"He sings to me," she said one afternoon, her fingers wrapped around her mug. "This old lullaby. He howls it outside my window at night, and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard."

My mother's lullaby.

I kept my face still. "That sounds lovely."

"And he's teaching me to fight," she continued, her eyes bright. "Not like regular training. It's this technique that feels like dancing. He says I'm a natural."

My technique. The one I'd drilled into Roland for months until his form was flawless.

I took a slow sip of tea. "He sounds very attentive."

"He is." She leaned forward, lowering her voice like she was sharing something sacred. "He even made me this."

She reached into her collar and pulled out a pendant on a silver chain.

Moonstone. Crescent-and-thorn motif. Delicate, intricate, unmistakable.

I stared at it.

I had sketched that design when I was fifteen. In a notebook I'd filled with dozens of patterns, back when I thought I might spend my life making beautiful things instead of building someone else's empire. I'd abandoned that notebook the week I met Roland. I'd told myself the Moon Goddess had given me something better.

Clementine held the pendant up, letting it catch the light. "Isn't it gorgeous? He said he designed it himself."

My wolf went absolutely still.

Not with rage. Not with grief.

With clarity.

I set my mug down carefully. "It's beautiful," I said.

My voice didn't shake.

Clementine tucked the pendant back under her shirt, her smile soft and private. She kept talking — something about baby names, I think — but I stopped hearing her.

Because the last thread had just snapped.

***

I walked out of the café into the gray afternoon. Buster fell into step beside me, his presence steady and unbothered. The air smelled like rain.

I didn't cry.

What replaced the grief wasn't rage. It was something colder. Sharper. The quiet, predatory stillness of a Nighthollow wolf who had finally identified her target and begun to plan.

Roland had taken everything I gave him — my bloodline's resources, my combat knowledge, my mother's lullaby, my own designs — and repackaged it as tenderness for a she-wolf who didn't even know my name.

He had spent five years punishing me for making him everything he was.

And now I was going to take it all back.
