The administrative storage room smelled like old paper and dust that had settled into layers no one bothered to disturb. I came here after midnight, when the pack house went quiet and Sterling sealed himself in his study with Nyla or disappeared into whatever he did that did not require a Luna's presence.

I pulled files. Treaty codes. Reparation clauses. Mate-bond jurisprudence dating back forty years. The kind of documents that gathered dust because Alphas signed what their Betas prepared and no one read the subsections.

I read every subsection.

My ribs ached where the graft scar pulled when I bent forward. I pressed my thumbnail into my wrist and kept reading. Marlee's latest suppressant vial sat in my pocket, half-empty. I took the doses on schedule. Sable stayed quiet underneath, but I felt her—a steady hum, like a engine idling.

Waiting.

I drafted the rejection clause on the third night. Not on paper. In my head. I refined it against every interpretation of inter-pack code I could find. If Sterling invoked Alpha authority, the clause held. If he claimed bond-right, the clause superseded it. If he argued lack of witness, the treaty itself named the witness requirement and Silverpine's delegation would be present.

Airtight.

I wrote it down once, on a scrap I burned in the storage room's old furnace vent. Then I memorized it. Every word. Every comma.

Marlee found me there on the fifth night. She set a cloth-wrapped bundle on the table without speaking. Inside: another vial, this one darker than the others, and a folded note in handwriting I did not recognize.

*Keep taking these. Do not stop. You will know when.*

I looked at her. "Who's your source?"

"Someone who remembers what you did for the Omegas two winters ago." Her mouth was a dry line. "When you countermanded Sterling's reduction order and kept our rations intact."

I had forgotten that. Sterling had been furious for a week.

"They're risking a lot," I said quietly.

"So are you."

I took the vial. Marlee pulled a second item from her pocket—a folded square of paper, edges worn soft.

"The healer's report," she said. "From the snow. I have three copies now. One in the pouch. One buried outside the east border. One going to Bloodcrest next week with a supply runner who owes me."

My throat tightened. "Marlee—"

"You're going to need proof," she said. Flat. Certain. "When you do what you're planning."

I did not ask how she knew. Marlee saw things. She always had.

I pressed my hand over hers briefly. She nodded once and left.

I stayed in the storage room until dawn, reading the same treaty subsection structure over and over, mapping where the clause would sit, how it would read, what it would do.

When I finally left, the sky was grey and my ribs ached and I had the entire thing memorized down to the punctuation.

Sterling announced the Silverpine alliance treaty negotiation at the next pack assembly. Routine political business. A formality to strengthen northern trade routes. He would sign the final draft within the week.

I stood beside him on the dais in the Luna's position—one step back, one step left, close enough to appear united and far enough that he did not have to acknowledge me. Nyla sat in the front row, her burned shoulder prominently bandaged despite the graft having healed weeks ago.

Sterling's voice carried across the hall, smooth and certain. "The treaty benefits all of Ironveil. Silverpine's resources will stabilize our supply lines through the winter."

No one questioned him. No one ever did.

I watched the warriors nod. I watched the Betas take notes. I watched Aldric, Sterling's second, collect the treaty draft from the administrative clerk and tuck it under his arm for later review.

I had accessed that draft two days ago through the filing system. My clearance as Luna had never been revoked because no one thought I was a threat. I had read every page. I had found the subsection that would hold the clause—buried deep, technical, the kind of language that looked like standard reparation protocol.

I had amended it.

I had returned the file to the system.

No one had noticed.

I stood on the dais and I felt Sable hum low in my chest, patient and satisfied.

Nyla's eyes found mine across the hall. She smiled. Small. Private.

She thought I was broken.

I let her think it.

Sterling signed the treaty four days later in his study during a routine Beta briefing. I was not present. I was in the Luna quarters, folding linens with hands that did not shake, when I felt it.

Not through the bond. Sterling kept that sealed.

Through something else. A shift. A door opening that only I could see.

The clause was active.

Legally filed. Counter-signed by Silverpine's delegation. Embedded in both packs' administrative records.

Irrevocable.

I set down the linens. I walked to the window. The grounds were empty. The sky was pale.

Inside my chest, Sable's hum deepened into something that felt like approval.

*Now we wait,* she said.

I pressed my hand to the glass. My reflection looked back—thin, tired, scarred along the ribs where the graft had taken.

But my eyes were clear.

I had built the door. Now I just needed the right moment to walk through it.

That moment came sooner than I expected.

That night, Nyla cornered Sterling in the great hall. I heard her voice from the corridor—high, sweet, insistent.

"A Mate Ceremony, Sterling. Public. So everyone knows."

I stopped walking. I stayed in the shadows.

Sterling's voice was quieter. "Nyla—"

"You've already marked me." Her tone turned wounded. "Everyone can smell it. Why not make it official?"

Silence.

Then: "I'll consider it."

I turned and walked back to the Luna quarters. I closed the door. I sat on the edge of the bed and I looked at the vial Marlee had given me, still half-full on the nightstand.

I took the next dose.

Sable went quiet under the suppressant, but before she did, she left me with a single thought, clear and cold.

*Let him announce it. Let him gather the witnesses.*
