Chapter 3

"You're really leaving your son behind?"

Ethan's voice caught me at the top of the staircase.

I stopped. My fingers tightened around the suitcase handle until the plastic creaked.

He had found it. The one sentence that could freeze me in place.

"Don't do that," I said without turning around.

"Do what? Tell the truth?" He came up behind me. "You walk out that door, Vivian, and you're walking out on Noah. Not just me."

A door banged open down the hall.

Noah ran out in his dinosaur pajamas, hair sticking up on one side. He didn't run to me. He ran straight past me and grabbed his father's arm with both hands.

"Dad, don't let Mom ruin everything again."

*Again.*

The word sat in my chest like a stone.

I looked down at the stairs. The same stairs. Then I looked at my son, clinging to Ethan like I was the storm and his father was the only shelter.

I understood something then. If I stayed, every day in this house would teach him the same lesson. Mom is the bad one. Mom hurts people. Mom makes Aunt Rebecca cry.

And he would believe it a little more each time.

I set the suitcase down. Slowly, I knelt in front of him. My stitches pulled, sharp and hot, but I kept my face calm.

"Noah. Look at me, sweetheart."

He peeked out from behind Ethan's elbow.

"I'm going to ask you one question. And I want you to tell me the truth. Okay?"

He nodded, wary.

"Do you want me to stay?"

The hallway went silent. Even Ethan didn't breathe.

Noah chewed his lip. His eyes darted up to his father, then down to the carpet, then back to me. Three seconds. Four. Five.

I waited. I would have waited all night.

"Only if you stop hurting Aunt Rebecca."

There it was.

I didn't flinch. I didn't tell him he was wrong. He was eight. He was repeating a story someone had read to him over and over until it sounded like his own voice.

I reached up and smoothed the wild piece of hair on the side of his head. It sprang right back up. It always did.

"I love you, sweetheart," I whispered. "I always will. But I won't stay somewhere everyone believes the worst about me."

His brows pinched together. "What does that mean?"

"It means you can call me anytime. Day or night."

"Okay, that's enough." Ethan pried Noah's hands off his sleeve and nudged him toward his bedroom. "Go to bed, buddy. Mom's just tired."

Noah hesitated in his doorway. For a heartbeat, he looked at me like he wanted to say something else.

Then the door clicked shut.

I rose to my feet. Ethan was already reaching for my suitcase.

"Give me that."

"No."

"Vivian, you're not well." He gripped the handle and tugged. "You just lost a baby. You're on pain medication. You're not thinking straight. You shouldn't be alone right now."

"I've been alone for months, Ethan. You just didn't notice."

"That's not fair."

"Fair?" A laugh slipped out of me, dry as paper. "You want to talk to me about fair?"

He yanked harder. The suitcase tipped toward him. His other hand came up for my arm.

I stepped back.

"Don't touch me."

My voice didn't shake. It didn't rise. It came out low and flat, and it stopped him cold.

His hand hung in the air between us.

In nine years of marriage, I had apologized when he was late. I had apologized when his mother criticized my cooking. I had apologized when Rebecca spilled tea on my dress.

I had never once told him no.

He stared at me like I was a stranger who had broken into his house.

"Vivian..."

"Let go of the suitcase."

His fingers loosened. One at a time.

I took the handle back and walked to the guest room at the end of the hall. I locked the door behind me. Then I sat on the bed in the dark and listened to him stand outside it for a long, long time.

He never knocked.

---

I left at eight the next morning.

I didn't take the diamond earrings Margaret gave me at the wedding. I didn't take the pearl necklace from our fifth anniversary, or the credit cards, or the car keys.

One small suitcase. One white box with three yellow onesies inside.

And two things in my coat pocket.

My mother's old watch, the gold worn thin around the clasp. It hadn't kept good time in years. I wore it anyway.

And my wedding ring. I had slipped it off at the hospital, the night Dr. Lawson showed me the bruises. I hadn't put it back on.

The housekeeper carried my bag to the taxi. Margaret watched from the breakfast room window with her coffee and didn't come out.

"Where to, ma'am?" the driver asked.

I gave him my friend Jenna's address across town.

The taxi rolled toward the iron gates. I knew exactly how the house would look if I turned. The white columns. The bay window of Noah's room.

I kept my eyes on the road ahead.

The gates opened. And closed behind me.

---

From the second-floor window, Rebecca watched the yellow car until it turned the corner.

Then she let the curtain fall and faced the man standing behind her.

Ethan hadn't shaved. He hadn't slept, either. The shadows under his eyes were dark as bruises.

"Hey." Rebecca crossed the room and laid her palm on his chest. She gave him a soft, sweet smile. "Don't look like that."

"She didn't even say goodbye."

"Because she wants you to chase her." Rebecca tilted her head. "You know Vivian. She'll come back. She has nowhere else to go."

Ethan didn't answer.

But his shoulders loosened. He wanted that to be true. So he let himself believe it.

Rebecca was right about most things, wasn't she? Vivian had no job. No family left. A friend or two who'd get tired of her on their couch within a week. She'd call by Friday, crying. He would be patient. He would forgive her.

He went to his office and buried himself in emails until the afternoon light slanted across his desk.

At 3:47, his phone buzzed.

An email from Harold Brennan. The family's attorney.

*Ethan, Vivian's counsel filed a petition for dissolution of marriage this morning. Please call me at your earliest convenience.*

He read it twice. Then he scrolled down to the attachment.

*Petitioner waives all claims to spousal support. Petitioner waives all claims to the marital residence. Petitioner waives all claims to Whitmore Holdings shares, trusts, and associated assets.*

She wasn't asking for money.

She wasn't asking for the house.

She wasn't asking for anything.

Ethan's hand went cold around the phone.

A woman who planned to come back fought for leverage. She made demands. She left a door open.

Vivian had nailed every door shut behind her.

He dialed her number. It rang once, then went straight to voicemail.

He dialed again.

*The number you have called is not available.*

He lowered the phone and stared at the screen. Somewhere down the hall, Rebecca was laughing with his mother.

For the first time in nine years, Ethan understood.

This time, Vivian wasn't waiting for him to stop her.

His phone buzzed again. Not Vivian.

A text from an unknown number.

*Mr. Whitmore, this is Dr. Lawson from St. Mary's. We need to talk about your wife's injuries. Before she does.*
