Chapter 1

"Vivian, why do you always have to make everything about yourself?"

Ethan's voice froze me in the middle of the living room.

I stood there in my stained dress, one hand pressed to my six-month belly. The other still held a dish towel. The roast was in the oven. I had been cooking for his mother since three o'clock.

Rebecca Shaw sat on our couch, her eyes red and wet. Rebecca, Ethan's "childhood friend." The woman who had somehow become a permanent guest in my house.

"I only asked her not to touch my things," she said softly. "I never thought she would get so angry."

"Your things?" I held up the hem of my dress. A dark brown stain spread across the fabric, still warm. "Rebecca, you poured hot tea on me. On purpose."

"Ethan, I swear, my hand slipped." Her voice cracked right on cue.

He didn't even glance at my dress.

"She said it was an accident."

"She was smiling when she did it."

"Enough." Ethan rubbed his forehead like I was a headache he couldn't cure. "My mother is in the dining room. Can we have one normal dinner? One?"

I opened my mouth. Then I heard small footsteps.

Noah, my eight-year-old son, came down the hall. He walked right past me. He didn't stop until he stood beside Rebecca, and he put his little hand on her shoulder.

"Mom, why are you always mean to Aunt Rebecca?"

The towel slid from my fingers.

I stared at my son. His face was so serious. So sure.

"Noah, sweetheart... that's not what happened."

"She cries every time she comes here." He frowned at me. "Dad says you get jealous."

Rebecca lowered her head. But not before I caught the corner of her mouth curving up.

I had no answer for my own child.

Dinner was quiet and cold. Ethan's mother complained the roast was dry. Rebecca praised it anyway, loudly, so everyone could see how kind she was.

After dessert, I carried the empty plates toward the kitchen, then headed upstairs to change out of the ruined dress.

Rebecca was waiting at the top of the staircase.

She leaned against the railing, arms folded. The tears were gone. Her eyes were dry and bright.

"You look tired, Vivian."

"Move."

"I'm just worried about you." She tilted her head. "Pregnancy makes women so unstable. Everyone says so."

"I said move, Rebecca."

She stepped closer instead. Her perfume was sweet and heavy. "Do you know what Ethan told me last week? He said coming home feels like a chore."

My chest went tight. "Get out of my way."

"Or what? You'll push me?" She laughed, then raised her voice so it carried down the stairs. "Vivian, stop! Don't push me!"

"What are you doing?"

Before I could step back, her fingers clamped around my wrist. Hard. Her nails dug into my skin.

"Let me go!" I twisted my arm. "Rebecca, let go of me!"

She yanked me toward her. I jerked away.

And my heel found nothing but air.

The world tipped.

My shoulder struck the first step. My hip slammed the next. I curled around my stomach, arms locked over my baby, and I tumbled. Wood. Wall. Wood again.

I landed at the bottom in a heap.

Then the pain came. It tore through my belly like something was ripping me open from the inside.

"Ethan!" My scream sounded like someone else's. "Ethan! The baby! Ethan!"

Warm wetness spread between my legs. I didn't dare look.

Footsteps thundered. Ethan's face appeared above me, white as paper.

"Vivian? Vivian, what happened?"

"Call... call an ambulance..."

Rebecca rushed down the stairs, sobbing before she reached the bottom. "I tried to stop her! She was so angry, she grabbed me, and then she just lost her balance!"

I tried to shake my head. Pain swallowed the words.

The paramedics arrived in minutes, maybe hours. I couldn't tell. They lifted me onto a stretcher while Rebecca clung to Ethan's arm in the doorway.

"She was screaming at me," she cried to the paramedic. "She wasn't in her right mind. She fell by herself."

Nobody corrected her.

Not even Ethan.

The hospital lights were too bright. Someone kept saying my name. Then nothing.

When I woke up, the doctor was standing at the foot of my bed. Dr. Lawson, a gray-haired woman with tired eyes. She held her clipboard against her chest like a shield.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I'm very sorry."

I already knew. I knew from the flatness under the blanket. From the silence where a heartbeat should have been.

"We did everything we could. We weren't able to save the baby."

I didn't scream.

I didn't cry, not right away.

I just whispered, "It was a girl, wasn't it?"

Dr. Lawson hesitated. Then she nodded.

I had picked out her name two weeks ago. Grace. I had never said it out loud to anyone.

Ethan stood in the doorway. His tie hung loose. His face was pale, his hands buried in his pockets.

He didn't come in.

"Ethan."

He shifted his weight. "The doctor says you need rest."

"Come here. Please."

He stayed where he was. His eyes drifted to the floor, the window, anywhere but me.

"Rebecca's pretty shaken up," he muttered. "She thinks it's her fault for not catching you."

Something inside me went very still.

Noah peeked out from behind his father's legs. He looked small and confused. For one second, I thought he might run to me.

Instead, he asked quietly, "Mom, does this mean you won't have another baby now?"

Not *are you okay.* Not *I'm sorry.*

I turned my face toward the wall and shut my eyes. Tears slid sideways into my hair, soaking the pillow. I didn't wipe them.

Ethan cleared his throat. "Come on, buddy. Let's let Mom sleep."

Their footsteps faded down the hall. Neither of them looked back.

I lay there listening to the machines beep. Steady. Empty. I counted them because counting was easier than thinking.

Then the door opened again.

Dr. Lawson came back in alone. She closed the door behind her and checked that it latched.

"Mrs. Whitmore. I need to ask you something."

I didn't move.

"When we examined you, we found bruising on your left wrist." She paused. "Four marks on one side. One on the other. Like fingerprints."

My eyes opened.

"There's also a bruise on your lower back," she went on carefully. "It's not consistent with the fall pattern your family described. It's consistent with impact. Force. Before you hit the stairs."

My heart slammed against my ribs.

Rebecca's nails. Her grip. Her smile.

And the bruise on my back. I hadn't felt anything there. Not from her.

Slowly, I lifted my head off the soaked pillow and looked straight at her.

"Are you saying someone pushed me?"
