After Losing His Heir, I Rejected the Alpha’s Mark

Seven months into my pregnancy, Leonard took me to his childhood friend’s birthday celebration in the Howling Forest Pack. The evening was supposed to be a joyous occasion, but it quickly turned into a nightmare. Leonard lost a game of darts, and as a forfeit, his friend demanded that his childhood companion, Gemma, perform a seductive dance. The room fell silent as Gemma, with tears in her eyes, began to unbutton her blouse. “Being a rogue has its price,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “But for you, Leonard, it’s worth it.” Leonard immediately stepped in, adjusting her clothes with a protective hand. Without hesitation, he turned to me. “Luna, you’ll dance in Gemma’s place. She’s not supposed to perform for others,” he said, his Alpha tone firm. Then, leaning closer to Gemma, he added, “You’re too precious to share.

Chapter 1

Seven months into my pregnancy, Leonard took me to his childhood friend’s birthday celebration in the Howling Forest Pack. The evening was supposed to be a joyous occasion, but it quickly turned into a nightmare.

Leonard lost a game of darts, and as a forfeit, his friend demanded that his childhood companion, Gemma, perform a seductive dance. The room fell silent as Gemma, with tears in her eyes, began to unbutton her blouse. “Being a rogue has its price,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “But for you, Leonard, it’s worth it.”

Leonard immediately stepped in, adjusting her clothes with a protective hand. Without hesitation, he turned to me. “Luna, you’ll dance in Gemma’s place. She’s not supposed to perform for others,” he said, his Alpha tone firm. Then, leaning closer to Gemma, he added, “You’re too precious to share. Let her do it—she’s already lost her figure anyway.”

Before I could protest, he ripped off my jacket and pushed me onto the makeshift stage.

---

The crowd erupted in disapproval.

“A pregnant Luna dancing like this? Disgraceful!” someone shouted.

“No wonder Alpha spends so much time with Gemma. Look at her compared to Tiffany—it’s obvious who’s more captivating,” another jeered.

I stood there, trembling under their mocking gazes, my hands instinctively covering my belly. I turned to Leonard, silently pleading for him to intervene, to let me step down. But he was too busy holding Gemma in his arms, whispering sweet nothings to her. He didn’t even glance my way.

It was Alexandria, my loyal Omega, who rushed onto the stage and draped a shawl over my shoulders, helping me step down. Leonard’s Alpha voice cut through the noise like a blade. “Who said you could leave? If you can’t dance, stay there until the performance is over!”

The crowd’s laughter and jeers intensified. I felt like a cheap trinket on display, every gaze stripping away what little dignity I had left. Gemma smirked from Leonard’s embrace, mouthing the words, “You lose again.”

And she was right. In Leonard’s eyes, I always lost.

As the music ended, one of Leonard’s friends joked, “Alpha, if you love Gemma so much, why not make her your Luna? You’re clearly tired of Tiffany. Just reject her and be done with it.”

Leonard chuckled, tightening his grip around Gemma. “Being Luna is too much work. I don’t want Gemma burdened with pack affairs. She’s meant to be free, to live a carefree life with me.”

His words cut deeper than any knife. All those promises he made before our marking ceremony—they were lies. He marked me not out of love, but to have someone to manage the pack while he indulged in his affair with Gemma.

When the music finally stopped, Alexandria helped me off the stage. Leonard looked at me, his expression cold and disdainful. “You’re embarrassing yourself, Tiffany. When will you learn to be as graceful and charming as Gemma?”

Gemma, ever the manipulator, chimed in, “Don’t be too hard on her, Leonard. She’s just not used to these kinds of events. It’s not her fault she’s awkward.”

Leonard’s gaze softened as he turned to her. “You’re always so kind, Gemma. Even now, you’re defending her.” Then, his eyes hardened as he glared at me. “Take notes, Tiffany. Learn how to make me happy. Don’t think carrying my child gives you any special privileges.”

His words shattered what little hope I had left. I clenched my fists, then let go, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. “Then let’s reject each other,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm inside me.

Leonard’s eyes widened, fury flashing across his face. “Do you even know what you’re saying? A Luna doesn’t have the right to demand rejection! Go home and think about what you’ve done!”

I didn’t argue. I simply turned and walked away, Alexandria by my side, my heart heavier than ever.

The fluorescent lights in the pack hospital made everything look corpse-pale. I stood beside the examination table where my mate lay, his skin gray and clammy, his once-commanding Alpha aura reduced to barely a flicker. Dr. Aris adjusted his glasses and delivered the verdict with clinical detachment. "End-stage renal failure. The wolf-poisoning has destroyed both kidneys completely." Giana's perfectly manicured hand flew to her throat. "There must be something—" "There is." Dr. Aris turned to me. "Luna Adelina possesses rare healing bloodlines. She's a perfect match." I didn't hesitate.

The scent of detergent filled my nostrils as I mechanically sorted through another load of laundry. Three years as Luna of the Silver Creek Pack, and here I was, still doing the work of an Omega. My hands were raw from the harsh chemicals, but that physical discomfort paled compared to the ache in my chest. I glanced at the clock—Atticus would be finishing his afternoon pack reports soon. Maybe if I caught him before his evening meetings, he'd actually listen to what I had to say. My parents' medical bills had been piling up for months. Dad's heart condition required specialized treatment, and Mom's arthritis medication wasn't covered by their insurance. As Luna, I had access to pack funds for emergencies, but Atticus controlled all financial decisions. I gathered my courage and made my way to his office, the familiar weight of disappointment already settling in my stomach. Atticus didn't look up when I entered.

The autumn air carried a crisp bite as I stepped out of the Silvercrest Pack's SUV, my boots crunching on the gravel of the riverside parking lot. The supply run had gone smoothly—groceries, cleaning supplies, and medical items all purchased within Marcus's meticulously outlined budget. My shoulders relaxed slightly now that the official tasks were complete. The small coffee stall by the river caught my eye, its warm lights glowing invitingly against the approaching dusk. The scent of freshly ground beans wafted toward me, and something inside me—perhaps Lyra, my long-silent wolf—stirred with a simple desire. Just one small pleasure. Five dollars. My own money, technically, though Marcus controlled our joint accounts with an iron grip. 'One vanilla latte, please,' I said to the barista, a young human girl with a friendly smile. She had no idea she was serving the Luna of the most powerful werewolf pack in the Pacific Northwest.

The sound of Katie's laughter echoing across the training grounds had always been my favorite melody. Today, it turned into something that would haunt me forever. I watched from the sidelines as my six-year-old daughter practiced her basic wolf stance with the other pack children, her small frame radiating the natural confidence that came with being an Alpha's heir. The afternoon sun caught the golden highlights in her dark hair—hair so much like Cameron's that it never failed to make my heart swell with pride. "She's getting stronger every day," Elena Dixon commented beside me, though her tone carried that familiar edge of criticism. "Though she could use more discipline. You're too soft with her, Melissa." I bit back my usual response. After six years of marriage to Cameron, I'd learned to pick my battles with his mother. "She's still young," I said instead, keeping my voice level. That's when it happened.

I was reviewing the pack's mind-link communications when I felt it—that familiar tingle of connection that meant someone was using the private channel reserved for pack leadership. My fingers froze over the crystal communication stone as Dahlia's voice filtered through, not meant for my ears but impossible to ignore when she was broadcasting so loudly. "Alpha, I can't wait for our private training session tonight," her voice purred through the link. "I've been practicing those moves you showed me last time. I think I'm finally ready to take it to the next level." There was a pause, and then her voice again, lower this time. "Our special connection feels stronger every day. It's like the Moon Goddess herself is pulling us together." My stomach twisted into knots as I sat frozen at my desk. The mind-link was supposed to be sacred—reserved for pack emergencies and official business. Not for... this.

The night of our marking ceremony, my mate, Alpha Harlan Mills, threw me out of our chamber. He claimed he had an aversion to scents, and from that day forward, he imposed a rule: I had to scrub myself daily with a harsh medicinal solution before I was allowed near him. Five years passed, and my skin became raw and blistered, not a single patch untouched by the painful burns. One night, he returned drunk and pulled me into the chamber, pressing me onto the bed with a force I hadn’t felt in years. I froze, tears welling in my eyes, thinking maybe, just maybe, the nightmare was over. But at the last moment, he kicked me off the bed with a disgusted sneer. Three days later, I discovered my name on a plaque at the Moonlight Lounge, a notorious gathering spot for high-ranking werewolves. My first night was being auctioned off to the highest bidder. “I heard she was clinging to you that night,” someone jeered. “Alpha Harlan, you’re truly something, staying loyal to Robin even when she threw herself at you.
