Chapter 4

Damian came to see me one last time before they wheeled me in.

He stood in the doorway of the pre-op room looking like he'd just come from a photo shoot. Pressed shirt. Expensive watch. Hair perfect. He crossed the room slowly, his shoes making soft sounds on the tile floor.

"Hey," he said. His voice was gentle. Warm. "How are you feeling?"

"Ready," I said.

He sat on the edge of the gurney beside me. Took my hand. His thumb traced circles on my palm. The same gesture he'd done a thousand times before. Comfort. Reassurance. Love.

"I'll be right outside," he said. "The whole time. And the second she's here, I'll be the first one holding her."

I smiled. "I'd like that."

He leaned down. Kissed my forehead. His lips were warm. Familiar. He smelled like the cologne I'd bought him for our anniversary. The one that cost four hundred dollars a bottle.

"Everything's going to be perfect," he whispered against my skin.

I closed my eyes. Let the words settle.

"I know," I whispered back.

He pulled away slowly. Squeezed my hand one more time. Then he stood and walked to the door. His footsteps receded down the corridor. Steady. Unhurried. The sound of a man with nothing to fear.

I opened my eyes.

Clear. Cold. Entirely awake.

I checked the clock on the wall. Ten forty-two a.m.

Tristan's team had landed forty minutes ago. They were in position.

I put my hand on my belly. My daughter shifted beneath my palm. A small kick against my ribs.

"Soon," I whispered.

The nurse came back. Checked my IV one more time. Smiled at me with that same warm, encouraging expression.

"Ready, Mrs. Hawkins?"

"Ready," I said.

They wheeled me out.

---

The surgical suite was white. Blinding white. The lights overhead were so bright they hurt to look at. The room smelled like metal and antiseptic and something else. Something sterile and final.

They transferred me from the gurney to the operating table. The surface was hard beneath my back. Cold even through the thin hospital gown.

Dr. Ashby stood to my right. Masked. Gloved. His eyes looked tired behind his glasses.

"You're doing great, Ivy," he said.

I didn't answer.

The anesthesiologist appeared on my left. Dr. Brennan. He checked the IV line. Prepared the syringe.

"You'll feel a little cold," he said. "Then you'll drift off. When you wake up, your daughter will be here."

I nodded.

He inserted the needle into the IV port. Pushed the plunger slowly.

I felt the cold. A sharp, spreading chill that moved up my arm and into my chest.

Then nothing.

No drowsiness. No fog. No drift.

Just pain.

Not from the IV. From staying awake. From forcing every nerve in my body to fight what was flooding my system. The compound I'd swallowed was working. Blocking the anesthesia at the receptor level. But it didn't block the war happening inside me. The war between chemistry and will.

I controlled my breathing. Slow. Even. The rhythm of someone sedated.

I kept my eyes at half-mast. Unfocused. Empty.

I waited.

Dr. Brennan checked my pupils. My pulse. He frowned slightly.

"She's under," he said finally.

Dr. Ashby stepped forward. Scalpel in hand.

"Let's begin," he said.

I felt the first cut.

Every nerve screamed. White-hot and immediate. I bit down on the inside of my cheek. Tasted blood. I didn't move. Didn't flinch. Didn't breathe differently.

I was stone.

I was ice.

I was The Crimson Thorn.

And I was going to watch every second of what they did.

---

Three thousand miles away, in a small flat in Notting Hill, Celia Park sat in front of three monitors and drank her fourth cup of coffee.

The screens glowed blue in the dark room. Financial records. Wire transfers. Shell corporations layered six deep.

She'd been working for eleven hours straight.

Her fingers moved across the keyboard. Fast. Precise. She pulled another thread. Followed it through the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, and back to a private account in Zurich.

There.

She opened the file. Read it twice.

Then she compiled everything into a single compressed dossier. Four hundred and seventeen pages. Bank statements. Payment records. Medical files. Emails. Text messages. The complete, unredacted truth of eight years of lies.

She attached one more file. The one that had taken the longest to source. The paper trail from Prague. The staged car accident. The hired driver. The payment of seventy-five thousand dollars. The medical records showing that Damian's finger injuries were deliberate. Controlled. Inflicted with surgical precision to leave scars but preserve function.

The hero was a performance.

The sacrifice was theater.

She encrypted the dossier. Sent it to Tristan's secure server.

Then she leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes.

"Got you," she whispered.

Her phone buzzed. A message from Tristan.

*Received. Well done.*

She smiled.

Then she opened a new window and started building the legal files that would bury Damian Hawkins so deep he'd never see daylight again.
