Chapter 2

Thirty thousand feet over the Atlantic, Tristan Jacobs sat in the leather command seat of his private jet and studied blueprints that glowed blue on three screens mounted to the cabin wall. Manhattan Presbyterian Hospital. Five floors. Two surgical wings. Seventeen possible entry points. He'd narrowed it to three.

Across from him, Marcus Webb cleaned his sidearm with the methodical focus of a man who'd done it ten thousand times. The cabin smelled like gun oil and recycled air.

"Ground team's staged," Marcus said without looking up. "Warehouse on Eleventh. Forty operators. Full kit."

Tristan nodded. His eyes tracked the hospital's ventilation system, the service corridors, the private elevator that led directly to the surgical suites. He'd memorized the routes hours ago. He kept looking anyway.

Beside his seat was a locked drawer. Inside it, beneath a stack of operational files, lay a single photograph. Ivy laughing in a safehouse in Bucharest. Ten years ago. Her head thrown back. Unguarded. Real.

He didn't open the drawer.

He didn't need to.

His phone buzzed. Encrypted channel. He read the message once.

Then he read it again.

"Timeline's moved," he said. His voice was flat. "Surgery's in forty-eight hours. Not four days."

Marcus's hands stopped moving. "We're still airborne."

"I know."

"That's tight."

"It is."

Marcus set down the gun. "We'll make it work."

Tristan looked at the blueprints. Calculated arrival time. Ground transport. Staging. Positioning. The math was brutal but possible.

"We will," he said.

He sent three messages. One to the ground team. One to Celia in London. One to a contact in the hospital's security division who owed him a favor that was about to come due.

Then he leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes.

Forty-eight hours.

He'd waited eight years. He could manage two more days.

---

In her apartment on the Upper East Side, Mallory Carr stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows and looked down at the city lights. She held a glass of wine in one hand. Her reflection stared back at her from the dark glass. Thin. Elegant. Expensive.

She'd been patient for eight years. She was done being patient.

She picked up her phone and called Damian.

He answered on the second ring. "Hey. I was just about to—"

"Move it up," she said.

"What?"

"The surgery. Move it up. I want this done."

Silence on the other end. Then: "Mallory, we talked about this. The timeline is—"

"I don't care about the timeline." Her voice was sharp. Cold. "Every day we wait is another day something goes wrong. Another day she figures it out. Another day we're exposed."

"She's not going to figure it out," Damian said. He sounded tired. "She trusts me."

"Then it should be easy to move the date."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"How much earlier?" he asked.

"Forty-eight hours."

"That's—"

"Forty-eight hours, Damian." She took a sip of wine. "Or I start wondering whose side you're really on."

The line went quiet. She could hear him breathing.

"Fine," he said finally. "I'll call the hospital."

"Good boy."

She ended the call. Set the phone on the glass table. Finished her wine.

Two more days. Then everything she'd worked for. Everything she deserved.

She smiled at her reflection.

Almost there.

---

Damian walked into Ivy's hospital suite carrying concern on his face like a coat he'd just put on. He sat on the edge of her bed. Took her hand.

"Hey," he said softly. "I just talked to Dr. Ashby."

Ivy looked at him. Her face was calm. Open. Trusting.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"Nothing's wrong," he said quickly. "It's just—they want to move the surgery up. Just to be safe."

Her hand tightened slightly in his. "Move it up how much?"

"Two days. They're concerned about your blood pressure. And the baby's heartbeat showed a small irregularity. Nothing serious, but they want to be cautious."

He watched her face. Watched for cracks. For suspicion. For anything.

She just nodded. "Okay. If that's what they think is best."

Relief flooded through him. He squeezed her hand. "You're amazing, you know that?"

She smiled. "I trust you."

The words landed like they always did. Warm. Reassuring. Exactly what he needed to hear.

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. "I'll be here the whole time. I promise."

"I know," she said.

He stood. Squeezed her hand one more time. "Get some rest. Big day coming up."

"Big day," she echoed.

He left. The door clicked shut behind him.

Ivy sat very still.

Then she reached for the burner phone on the nightstand. Opened an encrypted app she hadn't touched in eight years. Typed a message to an address in London.

*Freeze everything. Offshore accounts. Shell corporations. Every connected trail. Do it now.*

She hit send.

Set the phone down.

Picked up the ultrasound photo. Her daughter's tiny profile in black and white.

"Two more days," she whispered.

Her hand rested on her belly.

She didn't sleep.

She counted hours instead.
