Chapter 4

I didn't turn on the lights when I got home.

I sat down on the floor of the living room, back against the couch, and I stayed there. The city glowed through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Manhattan, indifferent as always. Beautiful and cold.

My hand found my abdomen without me telling it to. I pressed my palm flat against the fabric of my shirt. There was nothing there. That was the whole point. There was nothing there anymore.

The mason jar sat on the side table across the room. I could see its outline in the dark. I didn't move toward it.

Not yet.

I just sat there until the sky outside went from black to gray to pale gold, and the city noise shifted from late-night sirens to early-morning delivery trucks, and the light crept across the floor and found me still sitting in the same spot.

I didn't drop a pebble that morning. I couldn't explain why. Maybe because dropping it would make it real in a way I wasn't ready for. Maybe because some part of me was still holding on to the very last thread of something I couldn't name.

I showered. I dressed. I went to work.

---

The days that followed had a particular kind of cruelty to them. Not dramatic. Just steady.

Logan stopped pretending. He didn't bother with the performance of giving me real work anymore. He'd stop at my desk in the morning, drop a stack of papers on top of whatever I was already doing, and say things like, "These need to be filed before noon. Try not to mess it up."

Junior staff heard. They always heard. I watched their eyes slide away from mine, embarrassed for me in a way that was almost worse than pity.

I filed the papers. I answered the phones when his assistant was away. I updated Jocelyn's calendar with the same precision I'd once used to close eight-figure deals. Every task, I did flawlessly. My face gave nothing.

If Logan was waiting for me to crack, he was going to wait a long time.

One afternoon he stopped in front of my desk with two junior associates trailing behind him. He looked at the spreadsheet open on my screen and made a small, dismissive sound.

"You're still slow on the administrative side," he said. Loud enough. Always loud enough. "Jocelyn's schedule for next week isn't updated."

"It will be by end of day," I said.

"Make it by lunch." He walked away.

I made it by lunch.

---

Jocelyn got bolder every day. That was the thing about people like her—give them an inch and they start measuring the whole room.

She moved into the workspace beside mine first. Then she started leaving things on my actual desk. A coffee mug. A cardigan draped over my chair. Small claims, like a flag planted in territory she'd decided was already hers.

And then there was the lanyard.

I noticed it on a Tuesday. She was wearing it looped around her neck, swinging slightly as she walked—the executive key card that had once been mine, the one that opened the server room, the board meeting suite, the executive elevator. My name had been scratched off the back. I could still see the ghost of the letters if I looked closely.

I didn't look closely for long.

That afternoon, I went to my desk to retrieve a project file I'd started before any of this began. My handwriting on the tab. My color-coded system inside. I pulled it from the stack quietly.

Jocelyn was across the open floor, but she saw. She always saw.

She turned toward the room, her voice bright and carrying. "Oh, Olivia—" A small, sweet pause. "Logan said you're only handling support tasks now. Should I explain the filing system to you?"

Someone near the window made a sound that might have been a laugh, quickly swallowed.

I looked at her. Just looked. My face was completely still.

I tucked the file under my arm and walked back to my desk without a word.

She wanted a reaction. She wanted tears, or anger, or the satisfaction of watching me flinch. I gave her nothing. I sat down, opened the file, and kept working.

But something had settled in my chest. Something quiet and final, like a door swinging shut on its own weight.

That evening, I stayed late until the floor emptied. I sat alone in the humming silence of the office we had built. I looked at the glass walls, the city beyond them, the skyline Logan had pointed to three years ago and said, *we're going to own a piece of that.*

We. He'd said we.

I gathered my things slowly. I took nothing that wasn't mine. I left nothing behind that mattered.

When I got home, I walked straight to the side table. I picked up the jar. I reached into the velvet pouch and felt the last pebble cool and smooth against my fingers.

I held it for a moment.

Then I dropped it in.

The sound it made was soft. Almost nothing. But the jar was full now, and I set it down carefully, and I stood there in the dark apartment with my hand resting over my abdomen, and I finally let myself think the thought I'd been holding back for weeks.

I was done.

I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in months.

It rang once.

"Olivia." My father's voice. Steady. Waiting.

"Dad," I said. "Send the boat."
