After Huxley Betrayed Me at Our Wedding

After turning down Colby Harris' proposal for the 99th time, I was taken aback when I received a wedding invitation from him. The bride wasn't me, but his former flame, Georgina Lawrence. Feeling completely disillusioned, I impulsively accepted Huxley Griffin's proposal, a prominent figure in London society. Huxley was so ecstatic that he organized a grand fireworks display, publicly announcing our engagement. I thought I had found someone who would bring me lifelong happiness. That was until I accidentally overheard a conversation between him and a friend. "You really don't have that bad of a taste, but causing a car accident on the wedding day is a bit extreme, isn't it?" There was a cold chuckle that followed. "It's about her rare blood type to treat Georgina. I've already devoted the rest of my life to this. What more can she want?" "The title of Mrs.

Chapter 2

This was likely the first time Huxley Griffin had ever been slapped. However, he didn’t hold it against my father. Instead, he took all the blame on himself, pleading with my dad not to be upset with me.

My father, Drew, was filled with regret. “Huxley, it's Adaline who’s in the wrong. She doesn't deserve you.”

Everyone seemed to believe that Huxley was completely devoted to me, including my past self. But the more they insisted on it, the more unsettling he became to me.

After I saw my parents out, I looked at him with a steely gaze and scoffed, “Aren’t you tired of this act?”

Huxley pretended not to hear, looking at me with that same fake affectionate expression. “Addie, I know I’ve upset you. I’m sorry.”

“I promise, after the wedding, I’ll make you the happiest woman alive.” He ignored everything that had happened before, just repeating his declarations of love like a broken record stuck on replay.

To outsiders, marrying Huxley was seen as the ticket to a wealthy and loving life. But only I knew it meant becoming a puppet in his hands. My life would never be controlled by anyone else.

On the day of my procedure, Georgina Lawrence confronted me. She was in a frenzy, demanding to know why I couldn’t leave her alone.

“One accusation wasn’t enough for you? You had to make it a double feature!” she screamed. “You're about to marry Huxley, so why can’t you let go of Colby? Have you no shame?”

I had no idea what had triggered Georgina this time, but fortunately, I managed to dodge the slap she aimed at me.

“Seems like it’s not just your body that’s delicate; maybe your mind is too!” I retorted before walking away.

Later on, I discovered that someone had grown fed up with her deceitful ways and secretly recorded a video of her secret meeting with Huxley. They sent it to Colby Harris's parents.

Colby's parents, the Harris family, are extremely old-fashioned. After seeing the video, they were adamantly against Georgina joining their family. Even though Colby wanted to trust Georgina, doubt gnawed at him. Coupled with his parents' strong disapproval, he had no option but to suggest delaying the wedding.

Georgina stubbornly held me responsible for her problems and was determined to make my life difficult. Having just been through a physically taxing ordeal, I was in no mood for her relentless harassment. She yelled, “You witch! Why are you so determined to wreck my happiness?”

Fed up, I tried to push her out, frowning. Despite barely using any force, she dramatically fell backward, conveniently into Huxley's waiting arms.

Huxley immediately started scolding me. “Adaline, Georgina’s already not in great health. Why would you treat her like that?”

Colby picked Georgina up, shooting me a piercing look. “Adaline, you’ll stop at nothing to split me and Georgina up, won’t you? You don’t even care about dragging your fiancé’s name through the mud!”

I tried to defend myself with a cheap butcher knife, but Darius didn't just disarm me—he acquired me. He didn't just want my silence; he wanted total control. The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing the familiar hallway of our penthouse floor. I stepped out, balancing a bouquet of lilies in one arm and a bottle of Dom Pérignon in the other. Ten years. A decade of marriage to Marcus Sterling, the troubled boy I'd found and saved, the man who had become my entire world. My heels clicked against the marble floor as I approached our door, anticipation fluttering in my chest. I'd left the office early, canceling my afternoon meetings to surprise him. Marcus always made such grand gestures for our anniversaries—this year, I wanted to be the one to create a perfect moment. "He's probably still at work," I whispered to myself, sliding my key into the lock with practiced ease. The door swung open silently, and I stepped into the foyer, setting down the champagne to free my hand. That's when I heard it—laughter.

I never thought my world would collapse because of an Instagram post. It was just after eleven on a Tuesday night. William had texted that he was working late—again—so I'd settled into our sitting room with a glass of cabernet, absently scrolling through social media while Chopin played softly in the background. The plush cream sofa enveloped me as rain tapped against the floor-to-ceiling windows of our Upper East Side penthouse. Then I saw it. My finger froze mid-scroll. The glass nearly slipped from my hand. It was a casual post from Devin Marsh, one of William's associates: "Great minds at work even after hours #WallStreetNeverSleeps." The photo showed a cozy corner of Verre, an exclusive wine bar in Tribeca. And there they were—William and his assistant Lily, huddled close in a leather booth. He was sketching what looked like market projections on a cocktail napkin, his head bent toward hers.
