Chapter 4

The nurse left the report on the tray table and said congratulations like it was a simple thing.

I stared at the paper for a long time. Eight weeks. The number sat there, clean and factual, indifferent to everything it was about to detonate.

The room was quiet. The IV had been removed. Someone had taken Lydia's carnations away—Baylee, probably, before she left last night. The table was bare.

I folded the report in half. Put it in my purse. Got dressed. Signed the discharge papers.

I sat in my car in the hospital parking garage for one hour.

Then I drove home.

Hayes' car was in the driveway when I pulled in at seven. He'd beaten me home. The kitchen light was on.

I walked in. He was at the stove. Something in a pan. He turned when he heard the door.

"Hey." He crossed the kitchen in three steps, hands reaching for my arms. "How are you feeling? I was going to come get you—"

"Sit down," I said.

Something in my voice stopped him. He stepped back. Looked at me.

I set my purse on the counter. Pulled out a chair at the kitchen table. Sat.

Hayes sat across from me. The pan was still on the stove. Something was burning faintly. Neither of us moved to turn it off.

"Is Coleson your biological son?"

The question came out flat. No tremor. No accusation. Just the words.

Hayes went white.

The silence lasted maybe four seconds. Long enough.

"Hayes."

"Scarlett—"

"Say it."

His hands were on the table. He looked at them. The knuckle of his right thumb went pale where he pressed it against the wood.

"Yes," he said.

The word dropped into the room and stayed there.

"How long have you known?"

He didn't answer fast enough.

"How long."

"Three weeks." His voice was barely there. "I ran a DNA test. Lydia gave me a sample from his hairbrush. I got the results twenty-one days ago."

Twenty-one days. I counted backward in my head. The day he came home late smelling like cold air and coffee. The day he started sleeping on his phone. The day he stopped reaching for me in the morning.

Twenty-one days of lying next to me in the dark, knowing.

"She hid it from you," I said. "For six years."

"She said she was protecting me. I had nothing back then. She didn't want—"

"She left you because you had nothing," I said. "And she came back because you have everything. That's the story. That's the whole story."

Hayes pressed his hands flat on the table. "I know what it looks like."

"Do you?"

"I was going to tell you. I just needed time to figure out—"

"You needed twenty-one days to figure out how to tell your wife that the woman you installed at our front desk is the mother of your secret child."

He flinched.

I reached into my purse. Took out the folded paper. Set it on the table between us. Smoothed it flat with my palm.

Hayes looked at it. His eyes moved across the header. The date. The numbers.

The color left his face entirely.

"I'm pregnant," I said. "Eight weeks."

Hayes made a sound. Not a word. Just a sound, low and broken, from somewhere deep in his chest.

"Scarlett."

"I want a divorce."

He was out of his chair. His hands found my face, my shoulders, reaching for something to hold onto. "No. No, listen to me. I'll cut it off. Everything. Lydia is gone, I'll remove her from the building tomorrow, I'll—"

"Hayes."

"—I'll fix this. I swear to you. This baby—" His voice cracked. "This is what we wanted. This is what we've been talking about. I'm not walking away from this."

I looked at him. His eyes were wet. His hands were shaking against my shoulders.

I felt something. I want to be honest about that. I felt it. The pull of two years of marriage and three years before that. The ramen. The credit cards. The all-nighters. The man who remembered I hated sweet champagne.

I felt it.

And then I set it down.

"You left me in the rain on our anniversary," I said quietly. "You hid a child from me for three weeks. You put her in our building without asking me. And you sat across from me every single night knowing, and you said nothing."

His hands dropped from my shoulders.

"Your promises," I said, "are currency. And you have spent them all."

I picked up the pregnancy report. Folded it. Put it back in my purse.

I stood. Walked to the hallway. Stopped at the door.

The pan on the stove had gone quiet. Whatever was in it had burned through.

"I won't bring this child into a family where it will always come second," I said. "That's not a negotiation. That's just the truth."

I walked upstairs.

Behind me, Hayes didn't move.

The kitchen was very still.

I sat on the edge of the bed in the dark and pressed one hand flat against my stomach. Eight weeks. A fact. A number on a page.

Mine.

I did not cry.

I picked up my phone and texted Baylee three words.
