Chapter 4

The whisper campaign started small. A comment at a charity luncheon. A raised eyebrow at a gallery opening. Paige was telling everyone who would listen that I was cold, calculating, a manipulator who had set her up. By the time Renata called, the story had traveled through three different social circles.

"She's making you sound like a villain," Renata said over the phone. "We should respond. A statement. Something to control the narrative."

I was in my kitchen, making espresso at eleven PM. The machine hissed softly. "No."

"Athena—"

"Let her talk," I said, watching the dark liquid fill the cup. "The best counter to gossip is a public record no one can argue with. I'll build mine in the boardroom."

Renata was quiet for a moment. "You're going after the company."

"I'm learning the company," I corrected. "There's a difference."

I hung up and returned to my study. The Ward Enterprises governance documents were spread across my desk. I had been tracking Ford Baker's board alliances for weeks. He had relationships with three key directors. If Dallas stumbled, Ford would move. I made notes in the margins, mapping connections, identifying pressure points.

I didn't need to defend myself to people who whispered at parties. I needed to be indispensable when the crisis came.

The Ward family dinner was held at Eleanor's Fifth Avenue townhouse. It was a monthly obligation, the kind of ritual that old-money families used to maintain the illusion of closeness. I arrived alone. Dallas was in London for meetings.

Eleanor greeted me with her usual efficiency. "Athena. Good. You're on time."

The dining room was formal and cold. I took my seat and noticed a young woman across the table, maybe twenty-two, with Dallas's eyes and a sharper version of his jawline. She was watching me with open curiosity.

"You must be Mia," I said.

She leaned back in her chair. "And you must be the new wife. Number three, right? Or did I lose count?"

Eleanor's voice cut through the room. "Mia."

"It's fine," I said, meeting Mia's gaze. "It's a fair question. I'm the third Mrs. Ward. Though technically, I'm the only one still married to him."

Mia's mouth twitched. Almost a smile. "Do you love him?"

The table went silent. Eleanor set down her wine glass with a soft clink.

I didn't look away. "No."

Mia blinked. "Then why marry him?"

"Because the arrangement benefits us both," I said. "And because honesty seemed preferable to pretending."

She studied me for a long moment. Then she nodded, just once, and picked up her fork. The rest of the dinner passed in polite conversation, but I felt Mia watching me. Not with hostility. With something closer to recognition.

Afterward, as I was leaving, she caught up with me in the foyer.

"I like you," she said abruptly. "You don't lie."

"Most people prefer the lies," I replied.

"Most people are idiots." She shoved her hands in her pockets. "Paige used to call me all the time. Crying about Dad. Asking me to talk to him. Like I had any influence."

"You don't anymore," I guessed.

Mia shook her head. "She stopped calling after the wedding. Guess I'm not useful now that you're in the picture." She looked at me directly. "Just so you know, I'm not taking sides. But if I had to pick, you seem less exhausting."

She walked away before I could respond.

Two nights later, I went to the Tribeca lounge. It was a members-only club, discreet and expensive. I had booked a companion through their private service. His name was Marcus. He was polite, attractive, and understood exactly what the evening was: a transaction, clean and uncomplicated.

We were in the corridor near the private rooms when I saw Dallas.

He was walking toward me with a woman on his arm. She was blonde, laughing at something he'd said, her hand resting comfortably on his sleeve. A business associate, probably. Or maybe not. It didn't matter.

We stopped at the same moment.

Dallas's eyes went to Marcus first, then to me. His expression shifted through several emotions too quickly to name. The woman on his arm noticed and looked between us, confused.

I didn't speak. Neither did Dallas.

Marcus, to his credit, stayed perfectly still.

The silence stretched. Five seconds. Maybe six. Long enough for Dallas's companion to realize something significant was happening. Long enough for the air to feel thin.

Then I walked past him without a word, Marcus following.

Behind me, I heard the woman ask, "Who was that?"

Dallas's voice was tight. "My wife."

I didn't look back. I went to the private room, closed the door, and let Marcus pour me a drink. My hand was steady. My breathing was even. But something in my chest felt sharp and unfamiliar.

Not jealousy. Not hurt.

Something closer to satisfaction.

The next morning, Dallas would come to my penthouse. He would be furious. And I would be ready.
