I stood near the French doors, champagne flute in hand, watching Dallas work the room with the practiced charm of a man who had been born to this theater. The moment came sooner than I expected. I saw his expression shift as he checked his phone — a flicker of genuine concern breaking through his social mask. Then he was moving, murmuring excuses to the senator's wife, slipping toward the corridor with the urgent stride of a man with somewhere he desperately needed to be.

I followed, my heels silent against the marble floor. I found him in the dimly lit hallway, phone pressed to his ear, his voice low and tense.

"Paige, slow down. Tell me what's happening," he was saying, his free hand raking through his perfectly styled hair. "No, I can't leave right now. The entire board is here. The merger—"

He stopped abruptly when he saw me, his eyes widening slightly. I approached with unhurried steps, my champagne still half-full, my smile pleasant but not warm.

"Dallas," I said softly. "Is there a problem?"

He recovered quickly, straightening his shoulders. "Athena. It's nothing. Just a business matter that needs immediate attention. I won't be long."

I took a small sip of champagne, letting the silence stretch between us. Then I moved closer, close enough that my voice wouldn't carry back to the reception.

"Let me be clear," I said, my tone conversational but my eyes steady on his. "If anyone photographs the groom leaving his own wedding reception, the Stephens family will consider the alliance void. The stock merger collapses. Your grandmother's work for the past year becomes meaningless. And I will personally ensure that every board member knows exactly why."

I saw the calculations happen behind his eyes — the risk assessment, the cost-benefit analysis. His jaw tightened, but he nodded once.

"Understood," he said, his voice clipped. "I'll handle it."

He turned and walked back toward the reception, his posture rigid. I watched him go, feeling nothing but a mild satisfaction. The first test had been passed. He would stay.

Later that evening, as the celebration wound down, I found myself alone on the terrace. The night air was cool against my skin, a welcome relief from the stifling perfection inside. The ocean stretched before me, dark and vast under the moonlight.

"Enjoying the view, Mrs. Ward?"

I turned to find Eleanor Ward approaching, regal in midnight blue, her pearls gleaming in the moonlight. Dallas's grandmother moved with the quiet confidence of a woman who had spent decades at the center of power.

"The view is lovely," I replied, not bothering to pretend the evening had been anything other than what it was.

She studied me for a moment, then reached into her clutch. Without a word, she pressed something into my palm — a small foil packet. Birth control pills.

"The last thing this family needs is another complication," she said, her voice matter-of-fact. "Protect yourself."

I closed my fingers around the packet, meeting her gaze. This was not a gesture of kindness or concern. It was an alliance, formed in the cold, clear-eyed recognition of what this marriage was and what it would never be.

"Thank you," I said simply.

She nodded once, then turned and walked back inside, leaving me alone with the ocean and the weight of what I had just agreed to.

In the days that followed, I settled into our Upper East Side penthouse with clinical efficiency. Dallas and I occupied separate wings, shared public appearances as required, and otherwise operated as polite strangers. It was a dance we both knew the steps to.

Each evening, after the necessary appearances were complete, I would retreat to my study and request access to Ward Enterprises' board filings, shareholder records, and internal governance documents. I read them methodically, a pencil in hand, making notes in the margins. No one seemed to notice or care what I was doing. They saw only what they expected to see — a socialite playing at business.

But I was drawing a map. Every night, another piece of the company revealed itself to me. Another weakness identified. Another opportunity noted.

Meanwhile, Paige grew restless in her Midtown apartment. I could feel it, even from a distance. She had been kept invisible during the wedding weekend, a ghost at our celebration. Now she was demanding to be seen.

She called Dallas, her voice sharp with an ultimatum. "I will not stay hidden indefinitely," she said. "You need to find a way to acknowledge me publicly before this baby arrives. I won't be your dirty secret forever."

Dallas's response was careful, noncommittal. He promised her nothing concrete, offering only vague reassurances and empty words.
