Chapter 5

The cold hit me the moment we cleared the lodge door.

Not the air. The air was fine. It was the cold in my neck—the scar flaring white-hot for one vicious second, then dropping back to ice, like my body was still trying to process the fact that Carter's hand had touched me.

I stopped walking.

My hands were shaking.

I looked down at them. Both of them, fingers spread slightly, trembling with the particular violence of a body that has absorbed something it was not prepared for. Not fear. I knew what fear felt like, and this wasn't it. This was physiological. Cellular. The severed bond reacting to proximity, to contact, to the ghost of something that used to live in my blood and now only existed as scar tissue.

And then my wolf moved.

Not the faint, distant flicker I had felt in the reception hall when Xavier's scent first reached me. Not the thin thread of awareness that hummed between us during the sessions. This was something older and angrier—a low, internal snarl that rolled through my chest like a second heartbeat, reverberating off my ribs, shaking loose three years of silence in a single sustained vibration.

She was furious.

Not collapsed. Not retreating. Furious—pressing against the walls of the silence she had been locked inside, and the fury was so clean and so absolute that for a moment I couldn't breathe around it.

I pressed my fingertips against my neck. The reflex. The old habit.

Then I looked at my hand and deliberately lowered it.

"She's not gone." My voice came out steady. I was still not looking at Xavier. "My wolf. She's not gone."

A beat of silence.

"She never was," Xavier said.

Just that. No elaboration. No performance. He said it the way he said everything true—like naming a fact that had always existed and simply needed to be spoken aloud.

I exhaled.

We walked back to the car without touching, and neither of us said another word, and the glass between Xavier and whatever lived beneath his composure looked considerably thinner than it had this morning.

---

The marking happened four nights later, at the Nighthollow pack house, in a room that smelled like cedar and winter air.

I chose the moment. That mattered to me more than I had words for—that it was my choice, my timing, no ceremony required, no Alpha tone commanding it into existence. Just me, deciding.

When Xavier's teeth closed on the curve of my neck, I expected pain.

What I got was fire.

Not the cold incomplete ache that Carter's unfinished mark had left—that dull throb that had lived in my neck for three years like a bruise that never healed. This was a roaring, living current that moved through every nerve ending simultaneously, rewriting them, claiming them, and underneath it, in the silence where my wolf had been dormant—

She lifted her head.

Faint. Unmistakable. Like a wolf stirring after a long winter, not yet standing, not yet fully present, but aware. Breathing. There.

Xavier went absolutely still against my neck.

I felt his breath catch through the new bond—the bond that was already humming between us, warm and real and nothing like what I had been taught a bond felt like. I felt what he felt in that moment, unfiltered, unarchitected, entirely his: something so large and so careful that he was holding it with both hands to keep from letting it flood the room.

He didn't say it.

He didn't need to.

I already knew.

---

Nadia arrived the next morning before I had finished my coffee.

She set a file on the table without preamble—Mathew's Gamma operated the way my father operated, which was to say efficiently and without sentiment. She had been monitoring Ironridge's alliance activity for weeks. The intelligence was thorough.

Carter's Mate Ceremony invitations had gone out. Response rates were thin. Two core allies had declined with excuses so implausible they were almost insulting. The remaining wolves who had RSVP'd were second-tier, peripheral—the kind of attendance that looked like a crowd in photographs and felt like a warning in person.

And then Nadia turned to the last page.

Carter had added a segment to the ceremony program. A reconciliation address. He intended to call me forward publicly—step out of the crowd, humbled, visible—and use my compliance to reassert his dominance over the narrative. His Beta had apparently referred to it in a private message, intercepted two days ago, as the moment that would "put Sutton in her place once and for all."

He believed I would come.

He still believed I would come.

Nadia placed a second file beside the first. The remaining alliance doors that Mathew's Court pacts had not yet closed. She folded her hands and waited.

I picked up the second file. Read it. Every name. Every route. Every door still standing between Carter Campbell and the moment he would realize he was completely alone.

I set it down.

"Close them all."

He stripped Annetta of her wedding band, confiscated her winter coat, and officially exiled her, her daughter, and her hostile mother-in-law to a freezing Appalachian death zone. They were dumped in an abandoned mining town with nothing but canvas jumpsuits to die in the snow. Annetta knew Alek was framed in a ruthless political hit. Issac Rocha wanted them to rot in the mud and freeze to death, completely forgotten by the world. "We are going to live, and we are going to burn Issac Rocha to the ground." But Issac made one fatal mistake. He didn't know the quiet, submissive daughter-in-law had spent the last three years secretly building a military-grade doomsday bunker right in the heart of that very mountain. Stepping past the freezing mud, Annetta initiated the biometric scan, and the massive steel blast doors slowly swung open.
