Chapter 3

His scent reached me before I reached him.

Dark cedar. Something electric underneath it, like the sky in the seconds before lightning splits it open. My steps didn't falter, but my breath did—just once, just slightly—and I filed the sensation away with the same careful precision I had used to file every entry in my journal.

Notice. Record. Do not react.

The silence where my wolf used to live flickered. One heartbeat, heard through deep water. Then gone again.

I kept walking.

Xavier O'Brien had not moved from his spot near the edge of the Nighthollow cluster. He'd set his glass down on a passing server's tray without looking at it, which told me his hands were deliberate things—nothing wasted, nothing accidental. The wolves nearest him had given him three feet of space without being asked. Not from fear. From instinct.

I stopped in front of him.

Up close, he was exactly what the dossier had described and nothing like it. The glasses were real—wire-framed, slightly smudged at one lens, the kind a man forgets to clean because his mind is always somewhere else. His eyes behind them were very dark and very still, and they were doing the same thing mine were doing: reading.

"Sutton Silvercrest," I said. Not an introduction. A statement of fact.

Something shifted in his expression. Barely. The way a current shifts under water that looks calm on the surface.

"Xavier O'Brien," he replied. His voice was low. Even. The kind of voice that didn't need volume to fill a room.

"I know who you are." I held his gaze. "I'd like to speak with you about a political matter. Not here."

He studied me for one long moment. Not the way men usually studied me—measuring, assessing for weakness. He was listening to something I couldn't hear.

Then he said, simply: "When?"

---

The formal sessions began two days later at the Silvercrest stronghold, in a room with tall windows and old oak furniture that smelled like my childhood in fragments.

We sat across from each other with documents between us—territorial maps, alliance frameworks, the dry language of Lycan Court diplomacy—and I laid it out cleanly. A mating alliance between Nighthollow and Silvercrest. Consolidated Lycan authority in the northern territories. Mutual defense obligations. My standing restored not through sentiment but through institutional structure, bound by pack law and court record.

Xavier listened without interrupting. When I finished, he asked three questions. All three were exactly the right questions—the ones I had expected a man of his position to ask, and also the ones I had not expected him to ask first, because they were about architecture rather than advantage.

I answered them.

He made notes in a small leather-bound book with the focused economy of someone who writes to think, not to remember.

We met again the next morning. And the morning after that.

I watched him the way I had learned to watch people whose motives I did not yet trust. The way wolves oriented toward him without being summoned—not performing deference, just naturally angling in his direction the way plants angle toward light. The way his stillness was loaded, not passive. The way he went completely quiet sometimes in the middle of a sentence, not because he had lost the thread but because he was listening to something internal, and he trusted what it said.

I noticed that he noticed me noticing.

He didn't comment on it. He simply adjusted his angle slightly, giving me a cleaner line of sight, and went back to the documents.

I caught myself pressing my fingertips against the cold mark on my neck during the third session. I didn't realize I had done it until I saw his eyes drop to my hand for half a second before returning to the page.

He didn't say anything.

I lowered my hand.

---

On the fourth evening, after the formal session had ended and the other advisors had filed out, Xavier remained at the table. He closed his leather book and set it aside with the particular finality of a man who is about to say something that has nothing to do with documents.

"There was a Lycan Court gathering," he said. "Twelve years ago. We were both adolescents. You wouldn't remember it—you weren't formally presented."

I went still.

"My wolf caught a scent in the crowd." His voice was the same low, even register it always was. He was not dramatizing this. He was naming it exactly as it was. "White jasmine. Winter frost. I searched for the source for an hour. Found nothing. Filed it as an anomaly."

The cold mark on my neck throbbed once.

"The Moon Goddess's design predates Carter's interference," Xavier said. "It always did."

The room was very quiet. Outside the tall windows, the Silvercrest grounds were dark, and the first stars were coming out.

I looked at him for a long moment. At the careful stillness of his hands. At the way he was watching me without any of the architecture he usually wore in public.

"How long," I asked, "did your wolf search?"

Xavier held my gaze.

"Every day," he said, "until today."

Neither of us spoke after that. The silence between us was not empty. It was the kind that forms when two people have said the true thing and are deciding, separately, what to do with it.
