Chapter 1

The rejection hit me at 11:47 on the night of the full moon, and I felt it before I heard it.

Carter's hand was on my shoulder. His thumb brushed the incomplete mark on my neck—the one he had promised, for three years, to finish tonight. The ceremonial hall was packed. Hundreds of wolves stood in a ring around the ritual circle. Allied Alphas in the front row. My father's estranged banner nowhere among them. The moon poured through the open roof like a witness.

I tilted my head to bare my throat. My pulse hammered under his fingers. Three years, I thought. Three years of waiting.

Then his hand went still. And I smelled it.

It wasn't his scent. It was layered on his skin—something floral and heavy, artificial the way a perfume is artificial, sitting on top of him like oil on water. My stomach dropped before my mind caught up.

Carter's voice rang out over the crowd. Clean. Rehearsed.

"I, Carter Campbell, Alpha of the Ironridge Pack, reject you, Sutton, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold. Not warm-cold. Ice. Like a door slamming shut on an empty room. Something inside my chest tore loose and fell through me, and for one long second I couldn't find air. My wolf—the faint whisper I had chased for years—didn't scream. She just… stopped. Silence where a heartbeat should be.

I heard my own breath go in. Out.

I did not fall.

Behind Carter, the crowd parted. Gabriella walked into the circle in a red dress I had seen her wear on nights Carter said he was patrolling. Her wrists gleamed faintly under the moonlight. Her throat, too. The scent that rose off her was the same one clinging to Carter's skin, and my nose—stripped now of any bond-blindness—read it for what it was. Manufactured. Applied.

A fake mate scent bought from somewhere no clean pack sold from.

Carter's eyes flickered to her, and his pupils dilated the way a drugged man's dilate. He didn't even look at me again.

"Gabriella is my true fated mate," he announced. "The Moon Goddess has corrected—"

I stopped listening.

Two warriors materialized at my elbows. I knew both of them. I had poured them coffee at pack breakfasts. Dorian, Carter's Beta, stood behind them with his jaw locked so tight I saw the muscle jump. He would not meet my eyes.

"Sutton," one warrior said, low. "Please."

I let them turn me. I walked. Every wolf in that hall was watching, and I did not give a single one of them the sound of my grief. My heels struck the stone floor in a slow, measured rhythm. The doors opened. The night air hit my face, and the cold on my neck deepened until it felt like a stone pressed against my skin.

I didn't cry until the pack house was out of sight.

Then only for a block. Then I stopped.

---

The quarters I had shared with Carter smelled like him and, faintly, like her. I hadn't noticed before. I noticed now.

I moved through the rooms and packed what was mine, which turned out to be almost nothing. A sweater. Two books. A pair of earrings my mother had left me before she died. The dress I had worn the night Carter first told me he'd mark me at the Come of Age. I left that on the bed.

On the desk, under a stack of pack ledgers I had organized for him, was the small worn journal.

I picked it up. Ran my thumb across the cover.

Year one, page six: Carter says my wolf hasn't awakened because I'm 'practically an Omega.' Repeated at dinner in front of Dorian.

Year two, page nineteen: 2:14 a.m. Emergency mind-link. He drove out. Came back at dawn smelling of her perfume. Told me it was a border patrol.

Year three, page forty-one: Our anniversary. He forgot. Gabriella sat at the Alpha table. I served the roast.

My hand didn't shake. That surprised me. I closed the journal and slid it into my coat.

Proof. I had kept proof because he had spent three years telling me my memory was wrong.

I walked out of the room without looking back.

---

The forest at the edge of Ironridge territory was very quiet. My feet knew the path even in the dark. The mark on my neck throbbed with a cold that had no bottom.

When I reached the tree line, a man was standing there.

He was tall. Silver at the temples. His coat was black and cut like something out of a court I had never been invited to. His eyes caught the moon and threw it back, gold.

I stopped.

He stepped forward and inhaled once, slowly, and I watched something in his face change. Not soften. Confirm.

"Sutton," he said. His voice was low, deliberate, the way a man speaks when he has been waiting to say a word for a long time. "You are my daughter."

I didn't move. I couldn't.

"You are coming home," he said. Not a question. Not an offer.

Behind him, in the dark between the trees, a woman I did not know stood with her hand near her hip, watching the road behind me for anyone who might follow. No one came.

A car door opened.

Somewhere under my ribs, in the exact place where my wolf had gone silent an hour ago, something small and warm turned over once—like a coal breathing under ash—and then went still again.

I took the first step toward my father.

Behind me, in the pack house I would never enter again, Carter was already lifting Gabriella's wrist to his mouth.
