Chapter 2

He put the paper on the kitchen table the next morning. One page, single-spaced, printed clean.

I read it standing up. I didn't sit down. I didn't want to be comfortable for this.

It was short. Precise. The kind of language that sounds neutral until you read it twice and realize every word has been chosen to make you smaller. I was to attend the station recognition event on Friday. I was to stand beside Dani Cruz during the award presentation. I was to read a prepared statement acknowledging the fellowship reassignment as a legitimate professional decision and apologizing for — his phrase, not mine — any misunderstanding caused.

He stood across the counter and watched me read it.

"Your mother needs the surgery before the end of the week," he said. "The window is closing."

I looked up at him. His face was patient. Arranged. The face of a man who had already decided how this ended and was simply waiting for me to arrive at the same conclusion.

The pen was right there on the table. He'd placed it there too. Of course he had.

I thought about my mother's voice on the phone the night before. How she'd said she was fine, the way she always said she was fine, but there was something thin underneath it, something that sounded like a woman trying not to frighten her daughter. I thought about the photograph on her nightstand — me in a burgundy blouse on my first day at the station, laughing at something off-camera. She'd told me once she kept it there so I was the last thing she saw before she slept.

I picked up the pen.

I signed my name at the bottom of the page.

Connor picked it up, folded it once, and put it in his jacket pocket. He didn't say thank you. He didn't say anything. He just straightened the pen I'd left crooked on the table and went to make coffee.

---

The function room had wood-paneled walls and congratulatory banners in the station's colors. Someone had put out a cheese tray. There were maybe forty people standing around with drinks, the kind of event where everyone claps at the right moments and no one says what they're actually thinking.

I wore the dark dress. The one I'd worn to three funerals. It was the only thing in my closet that felt honest.

Dani was in the front row in something cream-colored and carefully chosen. She had the look of a woman who had won and was allowing herself to enjoy it. When I walked to the podium, she smiled at me. Full and warm and completely empty.

I looked down at Connor's words on the paper in my hands.

I read them.

I heard my own voice come out of my mouth and it didn't sound like me. It had my cadence, my breath control, the technical shape of my delivery — but the warmth was gone. I'd pulled it back, all the way back, because if I'd let any of it out it would have come out wrong. I read every sentence Connor had written. I said legitimate professional decision. I said any misunderstanding caused.

Somewhere in the middle of it, I heard the room go quiet in a different way. Not the quiet of an audience listening. The quiet of people who could hear something was wrong but couldn't name it.

I didn't look at Dani again. I looked at the back wall.

Near the door, Maisie was standing with her arms crossed tight across her chest, her drink untouched. She was staring at the floor. She didn't look up once.

I finished reading. I stepped back from the podium. Someone started clapping and everyone else followed.

---

That night I called Connor from the supervised window he allowed me — ten minutes, his phone, him in the doorway.

"The funds," I said. "You said after the event."

"There's a processing delay on my end," he said. "The hospital's billing department needs the insurance verification first."

I looked at him. "How long."

"A few days. These things take time."

The next evening: insurance verification was pending a review of the surgical estimate.

The evening after that: the review was waiting on a secondary approval.

Each day I called the hospital on his phone with him standing four feet away, and each day my mother said she was fine, and each day her voice was a little thinner than the day before, like something was slowly being turned down.

I started pressing two fingers to my throat again without meaning to. Old habit. The one that used to steady me before I went on air.

I stood in the kitchen one night after he'd gone to bed and looked at the empty drawer where my recordings used to be. The empty shelf where the router had been. The shredder bin he hadn't bothered to empty.

He was not going to release the funds.

I understood that now the way I understood other things I'd been slow to name. Quietly, completely, with no room left for doubt.

The question was what I was going to do with the time I had left.
