Chapter 5

It happened fast. That's the thing nobody tells you. You spend years watching someone sharpen a knife and when they finally use it, it takes about four seconds.

Dani caught me in the east corridor around seven-fifteen. The hallway was empty. The overhead light near the archive room had been flickering for a week — maintenance kept deferring the work order — so that end of the corridor ran dim and yellow.

'Vera.' Warm. Easy. Like we were friends who'd just missed each other at lunch. 'Can you help me confirm something in storage? The cabinet inventory for the equipment audit. I have the wrong sheet.'

I looked at her.

She held up a clipboard. Smiled.

I had the key in my pocket. The real one, the one I'd earned. I thought about what I still needed. Three more days, maybe four. I needed her to believe I was still the woman who bent.

I followed her in.

The storage room was narrow — two rows of metal shelving units running floor to ceiling, cable bins along the back wall, a rack of older broadcasting hardware along the right side that nobody had touched in months. The brackets on that rack were the kind that stuck out at elbow height, sharp-cornered, industrial.

I know that now because I spent a long time looking at one from the floor.

She let me get two steps ahead of her. I was reaching toward the cabinet she'd pointed at when I heard her shift her weight. I started to turn.

Then the shove came — both hands, hard, between my shoulder blades — and the rack was right there.

The bracket caught me across the lower throat.

The sound I made wasn't a scream. It was something smaller and wetter than that. I went down. My hands went to my throat automatically, pressing, and I felt warmth spreading fast between my fingers, and the ceiling of the storage room was very white and very still above me.

I heard her straighten her jacket. The soft sound of fabric settling.

I heard her heels on the concrete floor, measured and unhurried, moving toward the door.

Then the hallway. Then nothing.

I lay there and pressed my hands harder and tried to call out and what came out wasn't a word. It wasn't anything a person would recognize as language.

I stared at the ceiling and thought, with strange clarity: not yet.

---

Maisie found me.

She came in for her bag — it was on the bottom shelf near the door, right where she'd left it — and stopped in the doorway and made a sound I'd never heard from her before. Then she was on her knees beside me, her phone already out, her voice doing the thing voices do when someone is trying very hard to stay functional.

She called emergency services. She gave the address. She kept her hand on my arm while she talked.

In the hallway outside, while we waited, I heard Dani's voice. She was talking to someone — light, a little laughing, the tone of a woman wrapping up a pleasant evening. Maisie heard it too. I felt her hand tighten on my arm.

When the paramedics came, Maisie told them she'd found me. She said she didn't know what happened. She said she'd just come in for her bag.

I watched her say it. Her eyes were fixed on the floor.

In her coat pocket — I'd seen her put it there before my shift — was the small digital recorder she'd been carrying for weeks.

She said nothing about it.

---

Connor arrived forty minutes after they called him.

I was in a curtained bay in the emergency room by then, an IV in my arm and gauze at my throat and a nurse who kept checking the monitors with the focused expression of someone managing a situation she didn't like. The attending surgeon had already used the word severe twice. He'd used the phrase vocal cord damage once, carefully, the way doctors use careful phrases when they're preparing you for something worse.

I heard Connor's voice in the hallway before I saw him. Asking which bay. Thanking someone.

He came through the curtain and looked at me.

The surgeon explained the injury. The laceration depth. The damage to the cords. He said, with the neutral precision of a man delivering facts, that professional vocal use might no longer be possible. He said they would know more after the swelling reduced.

Connor nodded slowly.

Not the nod of a man absorbing a shock. The nod of a man confirming something he had already filed away.

The surgeon asked if he'd had trouble reaching the hospital. Traffic, Connor said.

I lay in the bed and watched his face. The careful arrangement of it. The patience behind his eyes, the same patience he'd brought to every document, every locked door, every evening of processing delays.

He didn't look surprised.

I pressed two fingers to the gauze at my throat. Light. Brief.

I looked at the ceiling.

Three more days, I thought. Maybe four.

I still had the key.
