Chapter 5

Atticus got home at seven.

He dropped his keys on the kitchen counter. Shrugged off his white coat. Poured a scotch he didn't drink. The apartment was quiet. Katalina had texted earlier. Dinner at eight. He'd said yes without thinking.

He walked to his desk.

The envelope sat in the center. White. Plain. His name written in Gracelyn's handwriting.

He picked it up. It was thick. Heavy.

He opened it.

Money. Stacks of hundred-dollar bills. He pulled them out. Counted without meaning to. Forty thousand dollars.

A note fell onto the desk.

*Consider every debt—emotional and financial—paid in full. Don't look for me.*

He read it three times.

Then he called her.

The number you have dialed is no longer in service.

He tried again. Same message.

He grabbed his coat. Drove to her apartment. Took the stairs two at a time. Knocked. No answer. He knocked again. Harder.

A neighbor opened her door. Looked at him like he was disturbing the peace. "She moved out last week. Lease terminated."

"Where did she go?"

"I don't know. She didn't say."

He called Josie.

She answered on the fourth ring. "What."

"Where's Gracelyn?"

Silence.

"Josie. Please. I need to talk to her."

"You had your chance to talk to her." Her voice was ice. "When she called you bleeding from a supply room. You laughed. Remember?"

His stomach turned over.

"I didn't—"

"Don't contact me again. Don't contact her. You're done."

The line went dead.

He sat in his car outside Gracelyn's building. Stared at the empty windows. His hands shook.

He drove to Mount Sinai.

It took three phone calls and two favors to access the security footage. He sat in a windowless office with a hospital administrator who didn't ask questions. The screen flickered to life.

Timestamp: 8:47 PM. Thursday. Three weeks ago.

Gracelyn walked down the corridor. Gray blazer. Heels. She looked tired.

Two men stepped out of a supply room.

Atticus leaned forward.

They stopped her. One grabbed her arm. She tried to pull away. They shoved her through the door.

The camera didn't see inside. But he watched the door stay closed for four minutes.

When it opened, the men walked out. Calm. Unhurried.

Gracelyn didn't come out.

Not for another twenty minutes.

When she finally did, she was on the floor. Crawling. Blood on her face. She pulled out her phone. Held it to her ear.

He knew exactly when she'd called him.

He watched her mouth move. Watched her say his name.

Then she lowered the phone. Stared at it. Closed her eyes.

The administrator cleared his throat. "You need anything else?"

Atticus couldn't speak.

He left the hospital. Sat in his car in the parking garage. Forty minutes. Didn't move.

His phone rang.

Derek Solis. A second-year resident. Someone Katalina knew.

Atticus answered. "Yeah."

"I need to talk to you." Derek's voice was shaking. "About Gracelyn Hamilton."

Atticus's hand tightened on the phone. "What about her."

"I was there. At the hospital. I didn't—I didn't know they were going to hurt her. Katalina just said to scare her. Make sure she stayed away from you. I swear I didn't know—"

"You were there."

"I didn't touch her. I just—I just watched. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I saw the footage request in the system and I thought—"

Atticus hung up.

He sat there. Engine off. Lights off. The concrete walls pressed in.

He'd laughed at her.

While she bled.

While she begged.

He'd laughed.

He hired a private investigator the next morning. Gave him Gracelyn's name. Her photo. Everything he knew.

"Find her," he said.

The investigator nodded. "It'll take time."

"I don't care. Find her."

The days blurred together.

He couldn't sleep. Couldn't focus. He made a documentation error during a research review. A colleague caught it. Pulled him aside. Asked if he was okay.

He said yes.

He wasn't.

He confronted Katalina at her apartment. She opened the door in a silk robe. Smiled. "You're early."

"Did you send those men after Gracelyn?"

Her smile didn't change. "Does it matter now?"

"Answer the question."

She stepped aside. Let him in. Poured herself wine. "She was in the way. I removed an obstacle. That's what people like us do."

"People like us."

"Yes." She sipped her wine. Looked at him over the rim. "Exceptional people. People who don't let mediocrity drag them down."

He stared at her. Really looked at her. And realized he had no idea who she was.

He didn't break up with her.

He didn't know how to act on anything he was feeling.

He just left.

Weeks passed. Then months.

The investigator called. "I found her. Seattle. Working in pharmaceutical sales."

Atticus booked a flight that night.

Six months after Gracelyn left New York, her phone rang.

She was in her studio apartment. The lease had finally started. She had a bed now. A desk. A lamp.

She answered. "Hello?"

"Gracelyn Hamilton?" A woman's voice. Professional. Warm.

"Yes."

"This is Maria Chen. I'm a recruiter with Cascade Pharmaceuticals. I have your resume. Are you still looking for opportunities?"

Gracelyn sat up. "Yes. Absolutely."

"We have a potential opening. Mid-sized company. Good growth trajectory. But there's a catch."

"What kind of catch?"

"The key account is a major hospital system. Gated by Dr. Kennedy Murray. She's a director. Very respected. Also very difficult. Every sales rep we've sent has failed. Most don't make it past ninety seconds."

Gracelyn wrote the name down. "Why?"

"She doesn't trust sales reps. Doesn't trust pharmaceutical companies. Doesn't trust much of anyone, honestly. Personal reasons. If you can get past her, the account is worth six figures annually. But no one has."

"I'd like to try."

Maria paused. "You sure? I don't want to waste your time."

"I'm sure."

"All right. I'll set up the meeting. Good luck. You'll need it."

Gracelyn hung up. Opened her laptop. Searched for Dr. Kennedy Murray.

Publications. Awards. A thirty-year career. Respected. Brilliant. Intimidating.

Then she found the personal details. Buried in a medical gossip blog. Murray's husband had left her two years ago. Affair with a younger woman. It became an open secret in their professional circle.

Gracelyn closed the laptop.

She didn't prepare a pitch deck. Didn't write a script. Didn't rehearse.

She knew exactly what she was going to say.

The meeting was scheduled for Thursday at two PM.

Gracelyn arrived fifteen minutes early. Sat in the waiting area. Watched doctors and nurses move past. The hospital smelled like antiseptic and coffee.

At two PM, a receptionist called her name.

She followed her down a corridor. Stopped outside an office. The nameplate read: *Dr. Kennedy Murray, Director of Hospital Operations*.

The receptionist knocked. Opened the door. "Ms. Hamilton is here."

"Send her in."

Gracelyn stepped inside.

Dr. Murray sat behind a large desk. Mid-fifties. Gray hair pulled back. Sharp eyes. She didn't smile.

"Sit."

Gracelyn sat.

Dr. Murray glanced at her watch. "You have ninety seconds. Go."

Gracelyn looked at her. Didn't open her briefcase. Didn't pull out materials.

"I'm not here to sell you anything," she said.

Dr. Murray raised an eyebrow. "Then why are you here?"

"Because I know what it's like."

"What what's like."

"To be left holding the damage of someone else's choices."

Dr. Murray went very still.

Gracelyn kept her voice steady. Calm. "I know what it's like to give everything to someone who didn't deserve it. To be humiliated. To be abandoned. To have people look at you like you're the problem."

Silence.

Dr. Murray's expression didn't change. But something shifted in her eyes.

"I'm not here to waste your time," Gracelyn said. "I'm here because I think we understand each other. And I think that matters more than any pitch I could give you."

Dr. Murray leaned back in her chair. Studied her.

Three seconds passed.

Then she spoke.

"Tell me about yourself."

Gracelyn did.

They even cut their palms to pay her debt, ignoring the fact that I was the one in bandages. That was the moment Elena Vitiello died. I didn't scream. I didn't beg. I simply packed my bags and defected to the one place they couldn't follow: the arms of Dante Moretti, the lethal Capo of New York. By the time they realized their mistake and came crawling back to beg in the rain, I was already wearing another man's ring. "You want forgiveness?" I asked, looking down at them. "Burn for it."
