Chapter 4

I wore the blue dress.

I almost didn't. It had been hanging in the back of the closet for eight months, still in the dry-cleaning bag, and I stood in front of it for a long time before I unzipped the plastic. Dario had said once—years ago, before Baylee, before the folder on my laptop, before the notebook in the drawer—that the color looked like deep water on me. I'd remembered that this morning when he slid the reservation card across the breakfast table. *Canlis. Eight o'clock. Just us.*

Just us.

I put on the dress.

The table was perfect. Of course it was. Dario did not do things halfway when he decided to do them—that had always been true, and I had always loved it, and tonight it worked against me in a way I hadn't prepared for. Candles. A window table over Puget Sound, the water black and silver below us, the city lights strung along the far shore. A custom tasting menu printed on heavy card stock with both our names at the top.

He looked at me when I sat down. Really looked, the way he used to.

'You wore it,' he said.

'I wore it,' I said.

We ordered wine. We talked—actually talked, the way we hadn't in months. He told me about a new contract. I told him about a book I'd been reading. Small things. Safe things. But they felt like something. The first course arrived and the candle between us made his face warm and familiar, and I thought: *maybe*. I hate that I thought it. I hate how fast I reached for it.

I reached across the table for his hand.

His phone lit up.

He glanced at it the way he always did—reflexive, automatic, the phone already an extension of his hand before his brain had caught up. I watched his eyes move across the screen. I watched something shift in his face.

He stood up.

'It's Baylee.' He was already reaching for his coat. 'She's at a bar downtown, says someone's harassing her, she's terrified—'

'Dario.'

'Twenty minutes.' He squeezed my shoulder once, brief and distracted. 'I'll be back in twenty minutes. Order the next course, I'll be back before it arrives.'

I looked at his empty chair. I looked at the two names printed on the tasting menu card.

I picked up my wine glass and finished it slowly.

An hour passed.

The second course came and went. The waiter refilled my water twice and stopped making eye contact. I sat with my back straight and my hands in my lap and I looked out at the sound and I thought about the notebook in my drawer. Seventeen entries. Seventeen times. And I had sat across from him this morning and let myself believe that the blue dress meant something.

I paid the bill. I left a good tip. I got my coat.

The bar was on Second Avenue. I found it in under ten minutes.

I didn't go in right away. I stood on the sidewalk and looked through the front window first. The place was warm and crowded, low lighting, the kind of bar that makes everyone look better than they are. I scanned the room once.

There was no scene. No frightened woman at the center of a crowd. No confrontation, no manager, no terrified anything.

Just a corner booth. Dario's coat over the back of the seat. Baylee's hand on his arm, her head tipped toward his neck, her mouth near his ear. His hand on her thigh, easy and familiar, the hand of a man who had done this many times.

I took out my phone.

I pressed record.

I held it steady. I kept my hand very still. I got the booth, I got their faces, I got the timestamp in the corner of the screen. I got the exact moment Baylee pulled back and looked at him and he let her turn his face toward hers.

I got the kiss.

I watched it happen through a four-inch screen and I felt something in my chest go very quiet. Not breaking. Not shattering. Just—done. The way a sound stops. The way a light goes out.

I stopped recording. I put my phone in my coat pocket.

I walked back to my car.

I drove home. I changed out of the blue dress. I hung it back up, this time without the dry-cleaning bag.

I sat at the kitchen counter with my laptop open and I uploaded the video to every platform I had. All of them. No caption. No explanation. Just the footage, the timestamp, the two faces clearly visible in the corner booth light.

Then I closed the laptop.

I took the notebook out of the drawer and I wrote the date at the top of a clean page. I wrote: *Entry eighteen. Our ninth anniversary. Duration: unknown. Stated reason: harassment. Actual reason: confirmed.*

I closed the notebook.

I made the guest room bed with clean sheets.

I got in.

I did not cry. There was nothing left to cry about. The thread I'd been holding onto had not snapped tonight—I understood now that it had been gone for a long time, and I had simply been standing there holding the empty end of it, telling myself it was still attached to something.

It wasn't.

I turned off the light.

I slept.
