Chapter 2

The Kennedy charity gala occupied the entire ballroom of The Plaza. Marble floors stretched like frozen lakes under crystal chandeliers. Two hundred guests in black tie moved through the space like pieces on a chessboard—calculated, deliberate, expensive.

I stood near the champagne fountain, still wearing the navy gown from three hours ago. My phone had died an hour after I left the hospital. Pierce's assistant had called the hospital's front desk to relay a message: Mr. Kennedy would see me at the gala. Regarding my urgent matter.

My urgent matter. My mother, coded twice, stabilized but deteriorating, needing a procedure that cost more than most people's houses.

I'd come straight from Brooklyn. I could still smell disinfectant on my skin.

Pierce appeared at my elbow without warning. He did that. Moved through crowds like smoke.

"You look terrible," he said quietly. His tuxedo was flawless. His cufflinks caught the light.

"I need—"

"I know what you need." He adjusted his cufflinks. The gesture was smooth, practiced. "I've decided to help."

Relief hit me so hard I swayed. "Thank you. I can go back to the hospital now and—"

"There's a condition."

I stopped breathing.

Pierce gestured across the ballroom. Kassidy stood near the auction tables, holding court among a cluster of socialites. Her gold dress looked like liquid metal. She was laughing at something, head thrown back, throat exposed.

"I need you to apologize," Pierce said.

The word didn't make sense. "Apologize?"

"To Kassidy. For your behavior. For the scene you caused on New Year's Eve."

I stared at him. "I didn't cause—"

"You left. You embarrassed me." His voice stayed level. Conversational. "You've been cold to Kassidy at every event. Rude. She's been patient, but I won't tolerate disrespect toward someone I care about."

The ballroom felt airless.

"I need to get back to the hospital," I said. "My mother—"

"Will receive excellent care. After you apologize." Pierce smiled slightly. "Properly."

Something in his tone made my stomach drop. "What does that mean?"

"Kneel."

The word hung between us.

"You'll walk over there," Pierce continued, "in front of everyone, and you'll kneel before Kassidy. You'll bow your head to the floor. You'll stay there until she tells you to get up."

I couldn't move. Couldn't speak.

"Do that," Pierce said, "and I'll release the funds. Your mother gets her procedure. Everyone wins."

I looked at him. Really looked. Searching for something—hesitation, discomfort, any sign that he understood what he was asking.

His expression was patient. Expectant.

"Pierce—"

"Or don't." He checked his watch. "Your choice. But I have a speech in ten minutes."

I thought about my mother. Her hand in mine. The way she'd smiled when I'd told her everything would be okay.

I'd promised her.

My legs moved before I decided to move them.

The ballroom floor was hard and cold. My heels clicked against marble. Conversations died as I passed. I felt eyes tracking me like cameras.

Kassidy saw me coming. Her smile sharpened.

I stopped three feet away. The socialites around her went quiet.

"Ella," Kassidy said warmly. "What a surprise."

I lowered myself to my knees.

The marble was freezing through my dress. My kneecaps hit with a dull crack that I felt in my teeth.

Kassidy's eyes widened. Then lit up.

"Oh my God," someone whispered.

I bent forward. Pressed my palms flat. Lowered my forehead until it touched the floor.

The marble smelled like cleaning solution and wealth.

Silence blanketed the ballroom. Two hundred people, frozen.

I heard a small sound. A giggle, quickly stifled.

Then I heard the camera click.

I kept my head down. Counted my heartbeats. One. Two. Ten. Twenty.

"You can get up now," Kassidy said finally. Her voice was bright. Delighted.

I pushed myself upright. My knees screamed. I stood slowly, carefully, keeping my face blank.

Kassidy was filming me on her phone. Still filming. She smiled into the camera, then panned to me.

"Say hi," she said.

I said nothing.

She lowered the phone, already tapping the screen. Uploading.

Pierce appeared beside me. "See?" he said quietly. "That wasn't so hard."

He walked away.

I stood in the center of the ballroom, surrounded by people who wouldn't meet my eyes, and waited for someone to tell me I could leave.

No one did.

Finally, I walked myself out.

Pierce's assistant called as I reached the lobby. "Mr. Kennedy asked me to inform you that your account has been unfrozen. You should have access within the hour."

"Thank you," I whispered.

I took a cab to the bank. It was nearly midnight, but the main branch had twenty-four-hour services for private clients. I still had my access card.

The account manager was polite. Professional. He pulled up my account without questions.

Then his expression changed.

"Mrs. Kennedy," he said carefully. "There appears to be... I'm showing a zero balance."

The floor tilted.

"That's not possible. My husband just—"

"The funds were transferred out five days ago." He turned the screen toward me. "Authorized by Mr. Pierce Kennedy. The receiving account is registered to—" He paused. "—a Ms. Kassidy Herrera."

Five days ago.

Before the gala. Before the kneeling. Before any of it.

The account had already been empty.

I stood up. My legs barely held me.

"Mrs. Kennedy? Are you—"

I walked out.

The hospital was forty minutes away. I ran every red light.

When I reached the ICU, the nurse's face told me everything.

"I'm so sorry," she said. "We did everything we could. She arrested again at 11:47. We couldn't—"

I pushed past her.

My mother lay in the bed, still and small. A photograph was tucked against her palm. Me at Columbia. Graduation day. Valedictorian sash across my shoulders.

She'd been holding it when she died.

I pulled a chair close. Took her hand. It was already cold.

I didn't cry.

I sat in that chair until morning, holding my mother's hand, and felt something inside me finish breaking.

When it was done breaking, it rearranged itself into something new.

Something that would never kneel again.
