Chapter 4

The message came through a mutual acquaintance. Someone I'd met twice at gallery openings. Someone who had no reason to contact me at all.

"Willow. I have something you need to hear. No explanations. Just listen."

The audio file was attached.

I stared at my phone for three full minutes. It was late. Jasper was asleep upstairs. The house was quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator and the sound of my own breathing.

I got up. Walked to the bathroom. Locked the door. Turned on the shower. Let the water run hot until steam filled the room.

Then I pressed play.

The recording was from a brunch. I could hear the clink of glasses. Background conversation. Laughter. Then Keyla's voice, clear and bright.

"God, you should have seen her face when she woke up in the hospital. Like a kicked dog. I almost felt bad."

More laughter. A woman's voice I didn't recognize. "You didn't."

"No. I really didn't." Keyla's tone was light. Amused. "The fall was perfect. I thought the tea might be too obvious, but she just drank it. Didn't even question it. And Jasper—" She laughed. "Jasper shut down the police report before she could even finish giving her statement. He actually told the hospital she was confused from hitting her head. Can you imagine?"

"And the baby?"

"Gone. Seven months. All that work she put into the nursery." A pause. The sound of a glass being set down. "I burned the ultrasound photos myself. Jasper doesn't know. He kept them in his desk drawer like some kind of shrine. I found them last week and just—poof. Into the fireplace."

Someone gasped. Not in horror. In delight.

"Keyla. You're terrible."

"I'm efficient." Her voice dropped slightly. Intimate. Conspiratorial. "She's still in the house, you know. Still sleeping in his bed. Still pretending she has a marriage. It's pathetic. But also kind of fascinating. Like watching something die very, very slowly."

The recording ended.

I sat on the bathroom floor. The shower was still running. Steam covered the mirror. I looked at my phone. At the black screen. At my own reflection in the glass.

I played it again.

Then again.

I listened to Keyla describe my child's death like it was a funny story she was workshopping for her next dinner party. I listened to her laugh. I listened to the women around her laugh with her.

I pressed my fingertips to my wrist.

Still alive.

I stood up. Turned off the shower. Unlocked the bathroom door.

I walked downstairs to the kitchen. I took out the burner phone from the lining of my winter coat. I looked at the single letter saved in my contacts.

W.

I pressed call.

It rang twice.

"Willow." My father's voice. I hadn't heard it in eight years. It sounded older. Rougher. But still controlled. Still Winston Carlson.

"I need your help," I said.

Silence. Not hesitation. Calculation.

"What kind of help."

"The kind that makes people disappear from polite society."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Tell me what happened."

"No." My voice was steady. Flat. "I don't need comfort. I don't need advice. I need resources. I need connections. I need the things you're good at. And in exchange, you get what you've wanted for eight years. Access. A relationship. Whatever you want to call it."

"Willow—"

"Those are the terms."

I heard him breathe. In. Out. The sound of a man making a decision he'd already made the moment he answered the phone.

"Agreed," he said. "Send me everything you have. Names. Evidence. Timeline. I'll have my people start tonight."

"There's a recording," I said. "A confession. I'm sending it now."

I forwarded the file. I heard the ping on his end.

"Received," he said. "Willow. When this is over—"

"When this is over, we'll talk. Not before."

I hung up.

I sat at the kitchen table in the dark. I opened my laptop. I pulled up every file I'd collected over the past two months. Every screenshot. Every photograph. Every receipt and text message and social media post.

I organized them into a single folder. I labeled it with Keyla's full name.

Then I sent it to my father.

At 4:17 AM, my phone buzzed. A text from a number I didn't recognize.

"Dossier compiled. Distribution channels secured. Release at 9 AM. Confirm."

I typed one word.

"Confirm."

I went back upstairs. I got into bed beside Jasper. He was still asleep. He didn't stir.

I lay in the dark and pressed my fingertips to my wrist.

Still alive.

At nine o'clock the next morning, Keyla Hudson's world began to end.

The recording went live first. Anonymous accounts across every major platform. No commentary. Just the audio. Keyla's voice. Clear and bright and utterly damning.

Within an hour, the dossier followed. Financial records showing payments to the contractor who'd "accidentally" left cleaning supplies near my surgical site. Text messages between Keyla and a pharmacy contact. Emails discussing timing and logistics with the cold efficiency of someone planning a dinner party.

By noon, every socialite in Manhattan had heard the recording. By two PM, Keyla's name was trending. By five PM, three major charity boards had quietly removed her from their rosters.

I watched it all from the living room. I didn't smile. I didn't feel triumph.

I just felt the weight lift. Piece by piece. Breath by breath.

Jasper came home at six thirty. His face was white.

"Did you do this," he said.

I looked at him. At the man I'd loved. At the stranger wearing his face.

"Yes," I said.

He stared at me. Waiting for me to say more. To explain. To justify.

I didn't.

"Willow. What have you done."

I pressed my fingertips to my wrist.

"I survived," I said.
