Chapter 2

The necklace appeared on a Tuesday.

I saw it first at the country club brunch. Jasper's mother had invited us—invited me, technically, though the invitation felt like an obligation she was fulfilling rather than a gesture she wanted to make. I'd worn a simple navy dress. Something that wouldn't draw attention. Something that wouldn't give anyone a reason to look at me too long.

Keyla arrived twenty minutes after we did.

She wore white. A silk blouse that caught the light and a skirt that moved like water when she walked. And at her throat, the fire opal necklace.

It was massive. The kind of stone you couldn't ignore. It caught the sun coming through the windows and threw light across the table like a small, deliberate fire.

Jasper's mother noticed it immediately. "Keyla, darling. That's stunning."

Keyla touched it with her fingertips. A delicate, practiced gesture. "Jasper won it for me at auction in Monaco. He remembered it was my favorite stone."

She smiled at me across the table. Warm. Friendly. Her eyes were something else entirely.

I looked down at my plate. I pressed my fingertips to the inside of my wrist under the table and counted my heartbeat. One. Two. Three.

Jasper's mother turned to me. "Willow. You're looking thin. Are you eating enough?"

"I'm fine," I said.

"She's been recovering," Jasper said. His hand was on the back of Keyla's chair. Not mine. "It's been a difficult time."

"Of course," his mother said. But her tone suggested she thought I was being difficult rather than experiencing difficulty.

Keyla leaned forward slightly. "Willow, if you ever need to talk, I'm here. I know how hard loss can be."

Her voice was soft. Sympathetic. The kind of voice you'd use with someone fragile.

I met her eyes. "Thank you."

She held my gaze for a moment longer than necessary. Then she smiled and turned back to Jasper's mother.

After brunch, I went to the restroom. Keyla followed.

She stood at the sink next to mine, reapplying lipstick in the mirror. We were alone. The door clicked shut behind us.

"The necklace is beautiful," I said.

She smiled at her reflection. "Isn't it? Jasper knows me so well. He always has."

She capped the lipstick. Turned to face me.

"He confides in me things he'd never tell his wife," she said. Her voice was quiet. Conversational. "Did you know that?"

I looked at her. At the necklace burning at her throat. At the perfect curve of her smile.

"I know," I said.

She tilted her head slightly. "You're stronger than I thought. Most women would have left by now."

"Would they."

"Yes." She adjusted the necklace with one finger. "But you're still here. Waiting for him to choose you. That's the sad part, Willow. He already chose."

She left. The door swung shut behind her. I stood at the sink and looked at my reflection. My face was pale. My eyes looked hollow.

I pressed my fingertips to my wrist. Still alive.

Over the next two weeks, Keyla was everywhere.

She came to the house while Jasper was at work. She brought flowers. She sat in my living room and drank tea and talked about nothing—her trip to the Hamptons, her plans for the holidays, a gallery opening she was organizing. She was always warm. Always kind. Always wearing the necklace.

She attended every family dinner. Every business event. Every gathering where I used to stand beside Jasper. Now she stood there instead.

Jasper's family grew colder toward me. His mother stopped calling. His father looked through me at dinners like I was furniture. At a charity gala, his business partner asked Jasper if he was "handling things at home."

Jasper canceled plans with me three times in one week. Each time, it was because Keyla needed something. A crisis with her apartment lease. A family emergency that turned out to be nothing. A panic attack that required his presence immediately.

I stopped asking why. I stopped saying anything at all.

Instead, I started keeping records.

I bought a second phone. A cheap one, paid in cash. I saved screenshots of Keyla's social media posts—every tagged photo with Jasper, every caption that positioned them as inseparable. I photographed the infection site on my abdomen before it fully healed. I wrote down dates and times: when Keyla visited, when Jasper left, when he came home smelling like her perfume.

I kept the phone hidden in the lining of my winter coat in the back of the closet.

And I began researching my father.

Winston Carlson.

I hadn't spoken to him in eight years. Not since I'd discovered the affair that destroyed my mother. Not since I'd told him I never wanted to see him again.

But I knew what he was. I knew the world he operated in. I knew he had resources that existed outside the normal channels—the kind of resources that made problems disappear.

I read articles about his business dealings. I traced his connections. I found his private number through an old contact of my mother's.

I saved it in the burner phone under a single letter: W.

I didn't call. Not yet.

But every night, I looked at that number. I felt its weight. The promise of it. The cost of it.

One evening, Jasper came home late. He smelled like wine and Keyla's perfume. He kissed my forehead without meeting my eyes.

"I'm sorry," he said. "Keyla needed me. You understand."

"I understand," I said.

He went upstairs. I heard the shower start.

I sat on the couch in the dark living room. I took out the burner phone. I looked at the single letter in my contacts.

I pressed my fingertips to my wrist.

Still alive.

I put the phone back in my pocket.

Not yet.
