After His Luna Sold Me at Auction

At sixteen, a wolfsbane-laced suppression device destroyed the awakening that should have been hers. A decade later, Carmen's replacement collar burns against those old scars as she's sold on a floodlit stage to twenty watching Alphas. Chapter 3

The training compound smells like sweat and turned earth. I've been here three days now, and I'm starting to map the rhythms—who arrives early, who avoids eye contact, which wolves give me space because Elias told them to and which ones do it because they think I'm contagious.

I don't have a wolf. Can't shift. Can't run with the pack or spar in shifted form. But I can read a fight better than half the ranked wolves here, and that's what keeps me on the field instead of shoved into some back room where the wolfless belong.

Today's sparring session pairs a Gamma named Torren against a visiting Delta from Riverside Pack. Torren's got fifty pounds on him and an aggressive style that's all forward pressure. The Delta's fast but sloppy—he overcommits on his strikes, leaves his right side open every time he pivots.

I'm watching from the edge of the sparring circle when it happens.

The Delta lunges. Torren sidesteps—exactly where I knew he would—and the Delta goes sprawling face-first into the dirt. Torren doesn't follow up. Just stands there grinning while the other wolf spits mud.

I don't realize I'm smiling until someone speaks beside me.

"You saw that coming."

I turn. The wolf standing next to me is young—maybe twenty-two, twenty-three. Tall. Lean build. His aura marks him as Alpha-blooded, but it's not oppressive. Just present. Confident without needing to prove it.

"Torren always sidesteps left," I say. "And the Delta telegraphs every move three seconds before he makes it."

The wolf grins. "You've been watching."

"Not much else to do when you can't shift."

He doesn't flinch at that. Doesn't look away or change the subject like most wolves do when my wolfless status comes up. Just nods like it's information, not judgment.

"Soren Vale," he says. "Crescent Bay Pack. Alpha-in-training."

"Scarlett."

"I know." His grin widens. "Everyone knows. You're the one who made Rayna Anderson look like an idiot in front of half of Blackridge."

I blink. "That's the story going around?"

"That's the truth going around," Soren corrects. "She walked into the main hall with six warriors and walked out with nothing but a dissolved mating arrangement and a bruised ego." He tilts his head, studying me. "You've got good instincts. Want to spar?"

I stare at him. "I can't shift."

"So? You don't need to shift to read a fight. I'll go human form. We'll work on positioning."

It's the first time in five years anyone has offered to train with me like I'm worth the effort. I should say no. Should keep my head down, stay out of sight.

I say yes.

We move to an empty section of the field. Soren's good—better than good. Fast, controlled, doesn't pull his strikes but doesn't try to flatten me either. I redirect twice, anticipate his footwork, and manage to lock his wrist before he sweeps my legs and puts me on my back.

He offers me a hand up. "You're fast."

"I've had practice staying alive without a wolf."

Something shifts in his expression. Not pity. Respect. "That's harder than most wolves will ever admit."

I'm about to respond when I feel it.

The aura.

Lycan. Royal. A pressure that makes the air feel heavier, hotter. I turn my head and see Elias standing at the field's perimeter, maybe thirty yards away. He's in human form, arms crossed, but his eyes are blazing gold.

He's staring at Soren.

Soren notices too. His hand drops from mine. He takes a half-step back—not submission, just acknowledgment. Smart wolf.

"I should go," he says quietly. Then, louder, "Good session, Scarlett."

He walks off. I watch him go, then turn back toward Elias.

He's already moving. Crossing the field in long, deliberate strides. He doesn't stop until he's standing directly in front of me, close enough that I have to tilt my head back to meet his eyes.

"You're training," he says.

It's not a question. I answer anyway. "Soren offered. I accepted."

"Soren Vale is an Alpha-in-training with a pack full of wolves who would follow him into fire."

"I know."

"He's also interested in you."

I blink. "He's interested in my instincts. There's a difference."

Elias's jaw tightens. For a second, I think he's going to argue. Then he just exhales slowly and steps back. "Be careful."

He walks away before I can ask what that means.

I'm still processing the interaction when I hear the whispers start.

They ripple through the compound like a wave—low voices, sidelong glances. I catch fragments as wolves pass.

Rogue auction.

Used goods.

Wolfless Omega.

I've heard worse. Survived worse. But the whispers follow me through every session, every corridor. By the time the formal pack run is announced at sunset, I know exactly where they're coming from.

Rayna.

The pack run is a tradition—wolves shift and run together in formation, a show of unity and strength. I stand at the field's edge with the handful of other wolves who can't or won't shift. Healers. Injured warriors. Me.

The shifted wolves gather in the center of the field. Fifty, maybe sixty of them. Their auras blend together into something collective, powerful. I watch them and feel the absence in my chest like a missing limb.

Then Rayna steps forward.

She's in human form, flanked by two Thornfield warriors. Her eyes find mine across the field. She reaches into her jacket and pulls out a small leather pouch.

She walks toward me. Slowly. Every wolf on the field turns to watch.

She stops three feet away. Smiles. "Can't run with the wolves, Scarlett?"

Her voice carries. Deliberate. Performative.

She throws the pouch at my feet. It hits the dirt and splits open. Gray powder spills across the ground.

Wolfsbane.

"Maybe the auction block is where you belong after all," Rayna says.

Silence.

I should walk away. Should ignore her. Should do anything except what I do next.

I bend down. Pick up the pouch. Bring it to my nose.

The scent hits me like a fist.

Not just wolfsbane. A specific compound. Slow-acting. Chemical. I know this smell. I've known it for a decade.

My father's breath in the weeks before he died. The room where his wolf went dormant and never came back. The scent I couldn't name as a child but learned to recognize as the thing that killed him.

My hands don't shake. My face doesn't move. I pocket the pouch, turn, and walk off the field.

Behind me, I hear confused murmurs. Rayna's voice, sharp with frustration.

I don't look back.

Because I'm not humiliated.

I'm hunting.
