Chapter 2

The first message came on a Tuesday.

I was in the back of a car heading to a meeting in Midtown when my phone buzzed. Unknown number. I almost ignored it. Then I opened it.

The photo was taken inside Travis's bedroom. I recognized the lamp on his nightstand. The gray linen duvet I'd helped him pick out at ABC Carpet two winters ago. Dayana was in it, her hair loose, the sheet pulled just low enough. The timestamp in the corner read March 14th. We had still been together in March.

I looked at it for exactly five seconds. Then I screenshotted it and kept scrolling.

Three more came over the next two days. Each one a little more deliberate than the last. Staged, but not obviously. The kind of thing you could almost call accidental if you needed to. I recognized the calculation in every frame — the angle, the light, the way Dayana was always positioned just so. This wasn't carelessness. This was craft.

I forwarded the whole thread to Cain with one line: Keep these.

He called immediately. I let it go to voicemail.

I didn't mention any of it to Rafael.

Saturday evening, Cain's car dropped me at the Sullivan townhouse on East 73rd. The building was the kind of old-money quiet that didn't need to announce itself — limestone facade, brass fittings, window boxes with late-season herbs. A housekeeper took my coat. Rafael was already in the dining room.

He stood when I walked in. Same as last time. No performance in it. Just habit, or maybe just him.

I almost didn't notice the lavender.

Then I did.

A small arrangement, center of the table. Fresh, not dried. The kind you had to actually go find. I stopped walking for half a second.

Rafael didn't explain it. He gestured toward my chair and said, "I ordered the halibut. I hope that's all right."

"It's fine," I said.

I sat down. I did not ask how he knew.

We talked through dinner the way we had at Le Bernardin — without the performance of two people trying to impress each other. He asked about a foundation event I'd mentioned in passing last week, remembered the specific detail I'd thrown out almost as an aside. I found myself answering fully instead of summarizing.

At some point I realized I'd stopped tracing the rim of my glass.

After dessert, we stood at the front door. The street outside was quiet. A cab rolled past, unhurried.

"Thank you," I said. Standard. Automatic.

Rafael looked at me — that same level, unhurried gaze. "Same time next week?"

I studied his face for a moment. I couldn't find anything in it that needed decoding. No angle. No subtext running underneath the surface.

That, somehow, was the most unsettling thing about him.

"Yes," I said.

He said goodnight. I walked to the car. I didn't look back, but I was aware, in some precise and inconvenient way, that he was still standing in the doorway until the car pulled out.

The whispers started the following week.

I heard them first at the Meridian Foundation luncheon — a fundraiser at the Pierre, pale tablecloths and orchids and women who'd known each other since Spence. I was standing with a board member near the windows when I caught my name from two tables over. Not directly. The way people say a name when they think they're being careful.

I didn't turn around. I kept my eyes on the view — Central Park in late October, the trees stripped down to their architecture.

"—apparently Travis ended things, and now she's—"

"—arranged match, of all things, the Sullivan boy—"

"—Dayana is absolutely lovely, though. You saw them at the Frick opening—"

I picked up my water glass. Set it down. Adjusted my posture by a fraction — shoulders back, chin level, the particular alignment that my mother had drilled into me at fourteen and that I now deployed the way other people deployed armor.

Across the room, I could see Dayana at a round table near the center. She was in pale blue, her expression soft and gracious, her hand resting lightly on the arm of the woman beside her. She laughed at something, covered her mouth with two fingers, looked briefly around the room the way people do when they want to be seen not looking.

Our eyes met for exactly one second.

Hers widened slightly. A flicker of something — satisfaction, maybe, or the anticipation of it.

I looked away first. Not because she'd won anything. Because she wasn't worth the sustained attention.

I turned back to the board member and said, "You were telling me about the literacy initiative."

She blinked, then recovered. "Yes — the spring rollout in the Bronx—"

I listened. I asked the right questions. I did not think about the photos on my phone, or the lavender on Rafael's table, or the way Travis's name had started to feel like something I'd found in an old coat pocket — small, lightless, belonging to a different season entirely.

The whispers continued behind me.

I let them.
