Chapter 4

The Brooklyn Bridge at sunset looked like a postcard. Orange light bleeding into the river below. Tourists taking photos. A jogger in yellow passing me without a glance.

I stood at the railing and held my left hand over the water.

The ring caught the last of the light. Six years on my finger. I used to twist it when I was nervous—before presentations, before doctor's appointments, before every phone call from the clinic in Zurich. A habit. A comfort. The physical proof that someone had chosen me.

Except he hadn't. Not legally. Not really. Not ever.

I opened my fingers.

I watched it fall. A small glint, then nothing. The East River swallowed it without a sound, without ceremony, the way it swallowed everything.

I didn't cry. I'd run out of that somewhere between the courthouse and here. What I felt instead was something quieter and more permanent. Like a door closing in a room you'll never enter again.

I took out my phone and bought a one-way ticket to Casablanca.

---

The city was already burning when I arrived.

Not everywhere. Just in patches—a street corner, a government building, a market square where men in scarves threw rocks at armored vehicles. The news called it civil unrest. The people on the ground called it something older and angrier than that.

I checked into a hotel two blocks from the worst of it. Gave my real name at the front desk. Paid in cash.

In my room, I laid everything out on the bed. Passport. Wallet. My phone with Douglas's contact still at the top of my recent calls. The worn stuffed rabbit—Lily's rabbit—I set apart from the rest, against the pillow, like she was sleeping.

I stood there and looked at it all for a long time.

Then I kissed two fingers and pressed them to the rabbit's matted ear. 'I'm sorry, baby,' I whispered. 'I'm so sorry I couldn't save you.'

Outside, something exploded. Close. The window shook in its frame. I heard shouting, then running feet in the hallway.

I pulled the hood of my jacket up and walked out into the chaos.

The street was smoke and noise and bodies moving in every direction. No one looked at me. No one saw me slip between them, moving away from the hotel, away from everything I'd left on that bed, away from the name Raina Stone and everything it had cost me to carry it.

I disappeared into the crowd like a stone dropped in water.

No ripple. No trace.

---

The State Department notification arrived at Douglas's Midtown office at 2:14 in the afternoon.

His assistant printed it and left it on his desk. He read it standing up, still in his coat.

One paragraph. Hotel in conflict zone. Street bombing. No body recovered. Raina Stone presumed dead.

He read it again.

Then his legs quit.

He didn't fall so much as fold, sliding down against the side of his desk until he was sitting on the floor, the paper still in his hand. His assistant knocked twice, then stopped knocking. No one came in.

He sat there for forty minutes.

That night, the penthouse was exactly as she'd left it. Her reading glasses on the nightstand, one lens slightly smudged. Lily's drawings still tacked to the refrigerator with little fruit magnets—a purple sun, a house with too many windows, a drawing that said *Mommy and Daddy* in crooked letters above two stick figures holding hands.

Her perfume on the bathroom counter. Half a bottle. He picked it up and stood there holding it, and something inside him finally, catastrophically understood what he had done.

Not the affair. Not the lies. Not even the email he'd deleted, though that knowledge lived in him now like a splinter too deep to reach.

This. This specific weight of a half-empty perfume bottle belonging to a woman who was gone because he had made her go.

He made it to the toilet before he vomited blood.

He sat on the bathroom floor for a long time after that, back against the cold tub, looking at nothing.

He did not sleep. He did not eat.

At seven the next morning, he called his lawyer.

'File the divorce papers,' he said. His voice was flat. Emptied out. 'Magnolia Riley. I want it done today.'

'Douglas, if you'd like to take some time—'

'Today.'

He called Magnolia himself after that. She answered on the second ring, her voice careful, already sensing something.

'Douglas—'

'I never want to see your face again,' he said. 'Not at my door. Not at my office. Not anywhere. Do you understand me?'

Silence on the line.

'She's dead, Magnolia.' His voice cracked on it, just once, like wood splitting. 'She's dead and I—'

He stopped. There was nothing left to say that would mean anything.

He hung up.

In the kitchen, Lily's drawings watched him from the refrigerator. The purple sun. The crooked letters. *Mommy and Daddy.*

He sat down at the table and put his face in his hands, and the penthouse held its silence around him like a verdict.

I was just the "safe" wife on paper, the placeholder used to secure his inheritance until the time was right. When Elia staged a fake fall near the champagne tower, Bennett didn't hesitate.
