Chapter 2

"Good evening. Welcome to Le Petit Chateau. Do you have a reservation?" the host asked, stepping out from behind a polished mahogany podium.

"Whitmore," I said, unknotting the belt of my trench coat. "My husband is already here."

The host tapped his tablet screen, his eyes scanning the digital list. "Ah, yes. Mr. Daniel Whitmore. He requested the glass conservatory tonight. A very special occasion."

"It's my birthday," I said, my voice without joy.

The host offered a bright, practiced smile. "Happy birthday, Mrs. Whitmore. Let me escort you. Your husband ordered our signature strawberry vanilla tier. We brought it out just a few moments ago."

"Did he mention if my son arrived with him?" I asked.

"A teenager? Yes. He carried in a large gift bag. He seemed very excited about the celebration."

"I'm sure he is."

We walked down a dimly lit corridor lined with velvet wallpaper. The restaurant hummed with low conversation and the clinking of expensive crystal. My chest felt tight. I had seen the reservation slip this morning. I knew whose name was written under the special instructions. But part of me needed to see it with my own eyes. I needed to watch my husband and my son celebrate another woman on the exact day I was born.

We reached the end of the hall. The oak doors to the conservatory stood slightly ajar. Warm, golden light spilled through the gap, cutting across the dark carpet.

"I will announce you," the host said, reaching for the brass handle.

"Wait," I whispered. I grabbed his wrist, halting his movement.

"Is something wrong, Mrs. Whitmore?"

"Give me a second."

I stepped closer to the gap. The glass-enclosed patio offered a perfect view of the private table.

Daniel sat leaning forward, a silver lighter gripped in his hand. He flicked the flame to life, holding it to a circle of tall candles atop a massive pink cake.

Maya sat directly across from him, wearing the same silk blouse she had worn to the office yesterday. She covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide.

"Daniel, you really went overboard," Maya said. Her high-pitched voice drifted easily through the cracked door.

"I told you I would handle it," Daniel replied. His tone lacked the sharp, impatient edge he used with me every morning. "You earned this."

Noah hopped out of his chair. He held a glittering paper crown in his right hand.

"Maya, you have to wear this," Noah insisted, pushing the crown onto her dark hair.

"Noah, be careful!" Maya laughed, adjusting the cardboard points. "It's going to ruin my blowout."

"It looks perfect," Daniel said, staring directly at her.

Propped against the base of the cake was a massive white envelope. The flap hung open, displaying a thick cardstock insert. From my angle, Daniel's bold black handwriting was impossible to miss. The letters were thick and dark, facing the glass partition.

To the woman who makes this house happy again.

"Can we eat now?" Noah asked, grabbing a silver cake knife from the table. "I'm starving."

"Patience," Daniel chided. He reached over and tapped Noah's wrist. "Let her blow out the candles first."

Maya leaned forward and blew. Noah clapped loudly, the sound echoing in the small room.

"Finally," Noah said, pulling a porcelain plate toward himself. "A year without Mom's boring health food. If I had to eat one more plate of steamed fish for a birthday dinner, I was going to lose it."

Maya reached over and ruffled Noah's hair. "Your mom just wants to stay healthy, Noah. We shouldn't be mean."

"Mom only cares about her pills and her scars," Noah muttered. He dug his fork into the massive slice Maya handed him. "She yelled at Dad this morning over a stupid wristband. This is the best birthday party we've had in forever."

A short, quiet laugh escaped my throat.

The host shifted beside me, his brow furrowing in confusion. "Ma'am?"

"It's nothing," I whispered, my lips curving upward into a hollow smile. "Just a joke I finally understand."

My hand dropped from the oak frame. I pressed my fingers hard against my right side, right over the fourteen-centimeter scar hidden beneath my clothes.

For twelve years, I ran an anonymous mailing account just to send him the things Daniel deemed a waste of money. I spent countless nights compiling memory albums, carefully gluing in his height charts and photocopying every single tennis award certificate he brought home. I did it all in secret, just so he would feel celebrated without Daniel's harsh criticism.

All that effort. All that hidden love.

Erased by a strawberry cake and a paper crown.

The host cleared his throat, keeping his voice low. "Mrs. Whitmore? Shall I go in and set another place?"

I stared through the glass one last time. Daniel was wiping a smudge of frosting off Maya's cheek with his linen napkin. Noah was laughing at something Maya said, his mouth full of cake.

"No," I said, my voice flat.

"Are you sure? The chef prepared a special menu for the evening," the host pressed, glancing between me and the laughing trio inside.

"They don't need another place setting," I told him.

"Should I let Mr. Whitmore know you stopped by?" the host asked, reaching for the door handle again.

"If you open that door, you will ruin his night," I said, my tone hardening.

The host paused, his hand hovering over the brass. "I just thought, since it is your birthday..."

"It isn't my birthday in that room," I replied. "It's hers."

The host glanced through the glass, finally connecting the dots. His professional smile faltered, replaced by a flash of genuine pity. "I understand, ma'am."

"Do not tell them I was here."

"My lips are sealed."

I turned around and walked away. My shoes made no sound against the thick carpet.

The double doors of the restaurant closed behind me, shutting out the warmth and the light.

I pulled my phone from my pocket. The screen illuminated the dark sidewalk.

I opened a text thread with Grace Lewis.

Have the divorce papers ready tonight.

I hit send. The message bubbled green and vanished.

A sharp wind whipped down the avenue, biting at my exposed neck. I didn't bother buttoning my coat. I just stood under the flickering streetlamp, staring at the screen.

Three dots appeared. Grace was typing.

Then, the screen flashed. An incoming call from Grace.

I swiped the green icon and brought the speaker to my ear.

"I sent the text," I said, skipping any greeting. "Did you get it?"

"I got it," Grace replied, her usual lawyerly calm missing from her voice. "Clara, are you sure you want to give up residency rights to the Whitmore house too?"

Ten feet away, under the dry shelter of the family tent, my husband Hayes held another woman against his chest. It wasn't me he was whispering comfort to; it was Felicity, his late brother's widow and childhood sweetheart. The humiliation didn't end at the cemetery. Hayes moved Felicity and her son into our home, relegating me to the guest wing while she took over the primary suites. He watched silently as her son smashed the only photograph of my deceased parents, then demanded I apologize for "scaring" the boy with my reaction. When Felicity's negligence ruined a twelve-million-dollar family heirloom, Hayes had the audacity to ask me to use my own savings to buy her a "consolation" engagement ring. He treated me like a parasite, never realizing I was a brilliant scientist with a hidden fortune and three patents to my name. I realized then that our three-year marriage was a hollow farce. Hayes had never even touched me, claiming he wanted to "remain pure" for his memory of Felicity. I was nothing more than a business merger, a smudge on the lens of the perfect family portrait he was building with another man's widow. The breaking point came during a lethal blizzard. Hayes promised to accompany me to my family's mandatory gala-a tradition where my absence meant a death sentence. But at the last second, he stood me up to stay home and tend to Felicity's stubbed toe. Left alone to face the wrath of the Santos Matriarch, I was forced to kneel in the freezing snow as punishment until my lungs began to fail and my vision blurred. Just as the darkness started to take me, a black Maybach smashed through the iron gates. My exiled brother, the man the world calls "The Wolf," stepped out of the storm to reclaim what Hayes had discarded. Hayes thought I was a helpless doll who couldn't survive a day without his trust fund, but he's about to find out what happens when you let a Santos daughter freeze.
