After Discovering His Betrayal, I Married His Rival

The penthouse sparkled under the glow of crystal chandeliers, casting prismatic light across the marble floors of the Summers estate. I smoothed the silk of my champagne-colored gown, my fingers trembling slightly as they brushed over my still-flat stomach. Our baby. Alexander's and mine. The secret knowledge warmed me from within, a tiny ember of joy I couldn't wait to share. "Tonight's the night," I whispered to my reflection in the gilded mirror of the powder room. My cheeks were flushed with anticipation, eyes bright with promise. At twenty-three, I was finally ready to announce my choice – though it had never truly been a choice at all. My heart had belonged to Alexander Sterling since we were teenagers, growing up together in this very penthouse. I practiced the words silently: "I choose Alexander." So simple, yet they would change everything.

Chapter 1

The arrangement my parents had created when they took in the three boys as wards had always seemed like a fairytale to me – that one day, I would marry one of them to unite our family businesses. That Alexander and I had fallen deeply in love seemed like destiny's blessing on the arrangement.

The party for Alexander's thirtieth birthday was in full swing as I emerged from the powder room. Manhattan's elite mingled throughout our Upper East Side penthouse, champagne flutes clinking, laughter rising and falling like music. My father caught my eye from across the room and nodded encouragingly. He knew what tonight meant.

"Have you seen Alexander?" I asked a passing waiter, who gestured toward the library.

"I believe Mr. Sterling went that way with his brothers, Miss Summers."

Perfect. All three brothers together – Alexander, Gabriel, and Sebastian. I could make my announcement to them privately first, before sharing with the guests. And then, when Alexander's face lit up with joy, I would whisper in his ear about the baby.

The hallway leading to the library was quieter, the sounds of the party fading behind me. I slowed as I approached the heavy oak doors, hearing Victoria Walsh's distinctive laugh from within. Victoria, their childhood friend from the Hamptons. Something about her had always made me uneasy – the way her eyes followed Alexander, perhaps, or how the brothers seemed to transform in her presence.

I reached for the door handle but paused when I heard my name.

"Poor Isabella," Victoria's voice dripped with mock sympathy. "She actually believes you love her, Alexander. It's almost cruel how convincing you've been."

My hand froze on the handle. The clinking of ice against glass – someone pouring drinks.

"We've all been convincing," came Sebastian's voice, lower and tinged with amusement. "That was the point of the game, wasn't it?"

Game? I stepped back from the door, my heart suddenly hammering against my ribs. Instead of entering, I moved silently to the side, where a gap in the bookshelves allowed me to see into the room without being noticed.

Victoria stood by the bar cart, pouring amber liquid into crystal tumblers. Her red dress clung to her figure as she handed drinks to each of the brothers. Alexander – my Alexander – accepted his with a smile that I'd never seen before, something intimate and unguarded that had never been directed at me.

"The arrangement was always that one of us would have to marry her for the merger," Alexander said, swirling his scotch. "We just needed to determine which of us would take the hit."

Gabriel, always the gentlest of the three, at least had the decency to look uncomfortable. "She's not that bad. Isabella is sweet."

"Sweet," Sebastian scoffed. "Sweet doesn't make up for a lifetime tied to someone you don't love."

"Exactly," Alexander agreed, his voice so cold I barely recognized it. "And since Isabella is clearly in love with me, I suppose I'm the unlucky one."

Victoria moved to stand beside him, placing her hand possessively on his arm. "It's such a waste. All three of you, and she gets to choose one for her happily-ever-after, while I..." She looked up at Alexander with naked longing.

"While you have all of our hearts," Alexander finished, his voice softening as he gazed at her.

My world tilted sideways. The tiny life inside me – evidence of what I'd believed was love – suddenly felt like a cruel joke. My entire relationship with Alexander, with all of them, had been nothing but a calculated game. A business transaction with the added entertainment of seeing which brother could most convincingly feign affection.

I pressed my hand against my mouth to stifle the sound that threatened to escape – not a cry, but something more primal, the sound of my heart shattering into a thousand glittering pieces, as false and fragile as the champagne bubbles that had gone to my head earlier in the evening.

The champagne tower was a precarious architecture of crystal and ambition, much like my marriage. I stood beside it, wearing a smile that had taken me ten years to perfect—a blend of warmth and impenetrable distance. The "Gilded Night" gala was in full swing, the Hamptons air thick with sea salt and seven-figure donations. I was playing my part: the gracious hostess, the polished accessory to Maximus Bryant’s empire. Then the air shifted. The crowd parted not out of respect, but out of the awkward curiosity reserved for car crashes. Sapphire Chavez marched toward me. Her dress was a shade of red that screamed rather than whispered, cut too low for the occasion and too high for dignity. In her clutch, I saw the telltale glow of a phone screen. She was livestreaming.

"No, Charlotte, it's time someone said it. Your husband has been playing artist for years with nothing to show for it. No sales, no commissions, just excuses." She turned to me, her voice rising. "When exactly do you plan to be a real provider? When will you stop being so lazy and actually contribute to this family?" The word 'lazy' struck like a physical blow. If she only knew the eighteen-hour days, the sleepless nights coding, the investor meetings squeezed between her precious family functions. I opened my mouth to respond, but never got the chance. Rebecca's palm connected with my cheek, the slap echoing through the dining room. "You are not worthy of my daughter," she hissed.
